WikiTree Reviews

  • Dec 27, 2022

I would give WikiTree a rating of 2 only because “some” of the members are friendly and helpful. Others (especially those in leadership whom you have to ask questions of from time to time) that get a little power are out of control. Most of the leaders have ego issues and if you aren't in their clique, you are nobody. They have openly discriminated against some groups of people on their message boards. If you call them out on it, your message is flagged for all to see and you are banned/blocked from even getting back to your own personal page.Which brings up the next misleading policy they maintain. Any information that you upload to their server is theirs to KEEP. I think this could be challenged legally as copyright laws should apply on anything that you have actually written or any photos/documents that are personal. I wouldn't recommend sharing your family tree with the whole world...maybe in a permission based setting. If the person is dead, they are definitely free game/stats for WikiTree. You may think you are helping the genealogy world, but believe me you are only contributing to THEIR success. Clearly, the owner, Mr. Whitten, doesn't want to do anything about these individuals who are driving members (who are volunteers by the way) away and leading us to publicly air our grievances-because there are plenty of us.

There are many ways to contribute online--FamilySearch always needs volunteers to transcribe documents, as well as various state archives and genealogy or historical societies. Don't be sucked in by their gimmicky claims. It's all smoke and mirrors. Oh and btw, I have many years of technical expertise and will be starting my own Wiki. Should I decide to take it public, you can rest assured my company will be nothing like this or some folks will be moving on.

I joined WikiTree.com November 4, 2018. By April 15, 2020, I made 6,828 contributions to this genealogical website, and earned 37 of their badges, including "Pre-1700 Certified," ""Big Heart," "Language Volunteer", "Generous Genealogist," and "Family Star." For several months, I also had their "Ranger" badge, and worked an hour or so a week, as a volunteer to monitor potentially harmful traffic on their website.

Unfortunately, when people in the U.S. "sprang forward" in the spring of 2020, a scheduling conflict was created because WikiTree doesn't enforce the use of one time zone. So, apparently, every year, when people in some parts of the world "spring forward," others don't do so until days or weeks later. WikiTree Leadership asked us Rangers to liaise with each as necessary to cover the gaps in the schedule, as necessary.
