A software professional has been arrested here for allegedly duping at least four people through the interactive marketing portal www.ebay.com, police said Friday.
Web designer Tarang Bhargava was arrested Thursday evening from his Neb Sarai office in south Delhi on charges of cheating the four to the tune of Rs.45,000 after creating a fake account in the name of Amitabh with well-known shopping portal ebay.com.
According to the police, after creating the fake account last year, Bhargava started cheating people by selling mobile phones via auction on the portal. He took the money drafts but never delivered the promised items.
The Internet scam came into light after one of the victims, Pankaj Sharma, went to the police.
"Ebay used to send him the drafts, which the company received from the buyers after deducting its commission.
They (ebay) never checked his credentials," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Economic Offences Wing) Prabhakar. --Indo-Asian News Service
