We took our little bulldog in to our local vet because she was sick - she was coughing and had blood in her urine.
We have Trupanion policy that has a three hundred dollars deductible. Our bill for all the work was $900. We submitted a preapproval before we agreed to having her treated.
She was diagnosed with bronchitis that resulted in lots of phlegm and an ear infection. She also had a urinary tract infection that resulted in blood in her urine and stool.
After submitting a preapproval request Trupanion agreed to pay $450 dollars out of a $900 bill that is taking into account the three hundred dollars deductible.
When we got the final bill Trupanion only covered $77. After speaking with Trupanion they said oh no every single difference malady is subject to a $300 deductible.
Coughing and sneezing was covered separately and the cost for such treatment did not reach the deductible of $300.
Infection in the ear was covered and that was covered separately by Trupanion and that didn’t reach $300. Blood in urine she was covered separately for that did not reach the three hundred dollars deductible.
Blood in stool she was covered separately for that did not reach the three hundred dollars deductible on its own.
Trupanion associated a separate $300 deductible with every single problem she had from being sick.
It’s as if my dog was hit by a car and broke her left leg and her right leg and Trupanion is trying to say they’ll assess a three hundred dollars deductible on her left leg and he three hundred deductible on her right leg.
Trupanion is deceptive and follows very bad business practices. Over the last four years we have spent $12,000 in premiums for both our bulldogs. Every time we submit a claim it’s terrible they deny coverage or try to split what was done to our dogs into separate items so they don’t have to cover everything in total.
We are canceling this is the final straw we are canceling our insurance and beg others not to trust this deceptive company.
After paying into Trupanion pet health insurance for years I tried to make a claim and they refused to pay even though it was specifically stated that they would do so. Our cat needs prescription cat food which is expensive. They told me after I reached $500 deductible I would get paid 50% of the price of the cat food going forward. Once I reached this level I got a letter stating that they do not cover pet food for ongoing health conditions. That is a total load of garbage. If the cat or dog need prescriptiuon food it would need it for life not a month. I would avoid using Trupanion as it looks like they do not pay out on a claim when your pet needs health care. They cannot be trusted so I would look for another company if you really love your cat or dog. Do not use Trupanion as they are a ripoff and will take your money and not pay you when your pet is sick. Avoid.
Be aware pet owner since this insurance company is operated by unethical and unscrupulous management team with deceitful and dishonest practices.
They will pay everything instantly when you have a small claim; however, when time comes to a bigger vet bill, they will come up with all sort of excuses and try to make it impossible for you to claim the money back. Not only that they don't pay, they jack up the rate so you would consider canceling the policy and they could easily weasel out taking care of your sick pet after they pocketed thousands of Dollars in premium for years.
Pet owner, please do think twice before you buy insurance for your pet with this company so you wouldn't end up like me after paying a few thousands of insurance premium for the last few years and had to pay the vet bill by myself even though my vet wrote a letter to trupanion to confirm that the illness is not preexisting.

He is a very healthy and active Dog since he came in January 2015 to MA-US and considering the wild life of new England (Lyme / Ticks) I decided to purchase a Pet Insurance from Trupanion. Before I purchased the Insurance I called Trupanion and explained to the person, that my dog is not from US and does not have a history in the US, and I asked if this would be an issue in the future and their answer was no.
So I get my premium plan in February 2016 from Trupanion and after paying for 15 months my plan I used but my claim get denied with reason and without an evidence of pre existing condition
My dog never had a problem and our veterinarian visits were only for Vaccinations to Animal Hospital of Lynnfiled and Vetco, until l saw a light limping in April 2017 and went to Woburn animal hospital for examination. They said that they have to do the imaging which I agreed. After claiming my costs to Trupanion my claims got denied with the reason "pre-existing condition", One of our previous vaccinations visit in August 2015 was to Animal Hospital of Lynnfield and we talked about bread issues and the medication which i gave to my dog. But they noted their opinion for hip dysplasia (which is a bread issue) without any imaging or even phisical examination, because one day before we went for a trip with the dog which he was very active and was a little bit stiff a day after from running and playing. The day after he was completly ok.
I appealed to Trupanion and explained that my dog was healthy, and the Lynnfield Animal Hospital did not had any imaging or X-Ray taken or even suggested to get any imaging and asked Trupanion for evidence for "pre-existing condition" for Hip dysplasia or Arthritis, but Trupanion denied again with the same reason, and some of them are:
-The dog takes Glukosamin tablets (which i gave him since he was 2 years old, because of his breed)
-The dog takes fish oil tablets (which i gave him since he was a pup for his healthy coat)
Since i have the insurance i paid $2880, and my Veterinarian bills are $1156.73.
I canceled my Insurance and claimed my money back, which i paid over this 15 months, Trupanion can`t pay my money back eighter.

Signed up and payed $169 for both. Well all of a sudden they are taking $195 out of my bank. Called in to be told they increase yearly due to get prices increasing and vets buying new equipment. Funny because all the vets in my area haven't increased their prices. The lady kept going on and on about why insurance is important and why they increase your fee yearly. I was upset that I didn't get a letter. The lady said I must of received a email, maybe it went in my junk. If you are to increase rates (alter a contract) you should ensure the other party is aware (telephone call since you supposedly have great customer service). I bet if I owed you money you would of called immediately. Scam artists... Read your policy carefully and do not go by their website reviews (seems fishy). They have a lot of negative reviews!
I am disgusted at the greed of this company. I bought policies for my two dogs when they were about 10 weeks old. I have seen my premiums skyrocket without notice almost every year now. Again this year another near $25 dollar increase.
I called Trupanion to find out why my premium's keep increasing. Their answer was that it was "market conditions". Basically, they can and will continue to raise my rates now that my pets are getting older and may need to actually file a claim. I asked if my rates would go even higher and they said, "Oh No, that's not necessarily true". So in my opinion what they are going to do is to continually raise my rates until I am forced to cancel at the time when they may actually need to use it.
This company is greedy and deceptive. I recommend staying as far away from this company as possible. Know this, your rates are going to rise fast and without notice. At first slow, then as time goes on sometimes once or twice a year.

Trupanion always seems to come up with a ton of questions about information that was provided when the coverage was purchased i.e. Date of Birth or Date of Adoption, Date and location of Spay/neuter, etc.. All Delay tactics for not paying claims. All they are intersted in is collecting your premium, like most other Lying, Thieving insurance companies. DON'T buy there insurance, RIPOFF...
