Summerhill General Contracting Reviews

  • Sep 28, 2016

I am conducting work on my 85 y/o Mother's home as she had a stroke late 2015 and I am now her caregiver. I found this contractor on HomeAdvisor where I had good results prior regarding contractors. Not this time. The below contractor first took a month to respond to me regarding his initial visit. The contractor is the owner operator and the company states plainly on business cards the same name as the street name the company states to be on, being Summerhill. Contractor came in with far above normal and customary estimates, I believe because he knew my time frame was eaten away by his initial lack of resposponse and numerous reasons for non job start (vacation/other jobs he stated were holding him from starting) and his knowing by my telling him this was my Mother's house that is in a Trust to which I am the Trustee of which I now believe contractor was taking advantage/opportunistic.

We agreed to stick to pretty much labor only regarding the job where I would buy all major materials, like a vanity for a bathroom remodel, and he would only for the most part charge me for the work.

Long story short I gave the contractor a $100 so called "GOOD FAITH DEPOSIT" on behalf of my 85 y/o mother as Trustee to which SUMMERHILL GENERAL CONTRACTING's owner and operator Bruce Sanders at this point in time refuses to do the job or return my Mother's money. What prompted this email reply of refusal from the contractor was his submission of a bathroom remodel proposal of $4590 to remove a vanity and replace it with one I purchased, replace 3 existing bathroom light boxes with LED light kit (approx $25 ea.), replace existing toilet (approx $100-$150), replace diverter valve for shower of which I purchase, prep and paint walls = $4590 !!!!!

SO when the contractor sent this email with the price gouging proposal attached (asked numerous contarctor and persons with home improvement knowledge all are shocked and appauled at the quoted price for work proposed) and asked if I had any questions or concerns to ask, I did by reply state "very very repectfully state that I thoguht this was high" for the work being done. I also elaborated how this did not seem to match up especially after we agreed that my buying major purchase items. The email reply started with and I quote "YOU KNOW WHAT, I think I spent at least 16 hours quoting and re-quoting these various jobs since you don't seem to be able to make a decision. I have not billed you for a minute of my time. I wish you much success with your project and the care of your Mother. God Bless, Bruce". So the Good Faith so called deposit is being kept, he wrote up only a proposal for an upstairs and downstairs bathroom, of which them he slighly revised both, but states he worked 16 hours on these, wishes me luck with the care of my 85 y/o mother while he takes her $100 deposit, followed by a "God Bless"???

In addition I was looking for HVAC work in the home as it has wall units. This contarctor recommended a contractor, ended up funding out it is his next door neighbor. This contractor quoted me but then refused to place anyhing in an invoice proposal with his license and insurance information even though I stated from the first meeting and repeatedly therefater that he had to pull permits to which all this information would be necessary, I even emailed the township info to this HVAC contarctor who end result was looking for a job removed from the proper consumer related protective documentation.
