Starving Students Reviews

  • Apr 6, 2017

I had the unfortunate experience of hiring Starving Students to move me from my home in Culver City to the SF Valley.

First of all, I got the lowest quote from the 3 companies I called --- that alone should have been a warning.

Then I was a dummy for not paying attention or doing my research on Yelp with over 122 NEGATIVE reviews.

They showed up to my move with an old truck that was too small to fit all my belongings from my 3bd home plus 2-car garage.

The movers who showed were unprofessional and appeared to me to be ex-cons === they both had tattoos everywhere and cussed up a storm when I wasn't visible but I could them nonetheless.

They broke a lot of my belongings from inexpensive to collectibles. On one item they tried to hide it when I saw they chipped a corner opf an antique small corner table that I paid $1,977!

When it was finally over after many breaks and long lunch of 1.5 hours they came up with a bill that totally shocked me. It was 67% higher than the quote they gave me.

I protested and demanded to speak to a manager about it. They stopped unloading and told me that in order to continue they HAD to get paid.

When I called the office a girl told me the same thing. I told her about the damages (she said to pay first and then file a claim otherwise they were goign to take the rest of the stuff to storage), she said to pay and deal with it later.

I asked to speak to her Supervisor or Manager. She said no one else was available!!!

We obtained a quote from their central headquarters for an in*town move. The amount quoted was a little over $200. The movers arrived late-after 11am when we were scheduled for an 8am move. Then, they took multiple breaks, stood around talking on their cell phones, until it was well after 4pm. As a result, they got stuck in traffic. When they arrived at my new home, they refused to offload our funiture until we'd signed their credit card receipt. It was my sister and myself (two lone, small females, without phone service in the new apartment), and it was well after dark. The two drivers kept yelling at us to sign the paper or they'd take away everything and we'd be charged storage fees and late fees, so we signed the slip. We were charged almost $900 for them to move two queen sized beds, a rocking chair and several boxes of books. I called and complained to their headquarters, and was told that it was the "traffic time". When I explained about the delay in their service and the men taking multiple breaks, I was told "too bad, guess you got what you paid for." It was terrible, and very frightening to be menaced by these hulking men. If you love and value your family, never use this service. When I moved from California to Arizona, the drivers were polite, considerate, and even offered to put my dining table together. They were respectful, and I assumed that all transactions with this company would go this well. I was so wrong. Please, avoid them. They will promise you one fee, but then charge you another, entirely higher amount. They are extorionist.
