Scott & Sons Auto Sales Reviews

  • Mar 30, 2016

I purchased a vehicle from this business on 2/13/16.

On, or about, March 6th, I was pulled over by a Houston Police officer for no apparent traffic violation, other than driving with a "stolen" license plate. The officer had initially trailed me for about half a mile, running my plate before pulling me over. My 16-year-old son was in the front passenger seat.

When I asked the officer why he stopped me, he responded that my tag registered as "stolen". He even gave me the name of the person whose name the tag is in. I plainly told the officer that I had no knowledge of such a person or that the vehicle was stolen.

About two weeks before that, my car was towed, because I ran out of gas on a busy freeway. When I went to retrieve it, the storage attendant told me that the vehicle's information was coming up under another name. Had I not had my valid full-coverage insurance policy with me, I would not have been able to retrieve my vehicle.

I had just purchased the car for $2350, which included the price for tax, title and license plate. The sale price for the car was $1900, but there was a $450 cost added for these other items. Plus, I was required to purchase full-coverage insurance before I could drive the car off the lot.

So, when the officer told me that my plate had come up stolen, I was dumb-founded.

As he was running my information, I called Scott & Sons and informed them of the "information". The young man who answered the phone told me to come in, that they would give me a new plate. I had already inquired with them, over the phone, about my permanent tags about two weeks prior to the police stop. The guy who answered had told me to check back on that following Friday. He never said that I had to pay my first payment in order to get my tags.

That said, I went to the dealership, on the day following the traffic stop. I was naturally upset that I'd been pulled over and could have been arrested for a crime I did not commit. There was one guy there, and I told him about what had happened. He said he write me out a new tag, but he acted as if it was no big deal. I told him that I did not appreciate being placed in that position, as it might have presented bad consequences for my son and me. The guy then got agitated and refused to give me another tag. When I asked about my permanent tags, he told me that I had to make my first payment before I could get them.

As I've stated, I had already paid for my title and license when I initially purchased the vehicle, so I could not understand why he was making me make another payment before I could receive them.

On Friday, March 11th, my older son and I were walking out to the school parking lot, where I'd parked my car. When we got out there, it was not there. We called the police. Two officers came, and we told them what had happened. One of the officers called in the vehicle's information, and, as it turned out, the dealership had had it towed.

When I called the dealership to inquire about it, the guy who answered the phone informed me that it was towed for late payment. My payment was due on the 10th, of which I was unaware.

When I asked him how much it was going to take to get my vehicle back, he told me that I would have to come up with proof of insurance, proof of residency, proof of income, and a valid driver's license.

My husband and I went there, later in the day, to negotiate with the guy. He showed me the permanent tags for my vehicle. He told me that my vehicle was in the storage, so I could not retrieve the items I had left in the vehicle at the time of repossession. Then his partner and he stated that, because it is a repo, it is no longer in-house financing. He refused to tell me how much it would cost to get back my vehicle, unless I had all the information he'd originally requested.

This business clearly advertises that prospective buyers are not required to have a job, driver's license, or good credit. Yet, after they took my vehicle, they told me I have to now produce all of that.

I didn't know that I was behind on the payment, and I don't understand why they are so hasty to repossess my car, when I was not even 24 hours late on the payment.

Furthermore, they placed my son and me in a dangerous situation by having stolen tags on my car, in the first place.

Now, I am currently without a vehicle that I'd paid a lot of money for, about a month ago, because of this business's fraudulent practices. I suspect that I am not the first customer that this business has done this to.

My family and I are currently living in a hotel, because we can't afford a permanent residence. When I got my income tax refund, I used over 2/3 of it to purchase that vehicle.

Please help me.

I feel like an idiot now looking back on the whole transaction but my desperation in getting my family into a vehicle clouded my judgement. I answered an online ad for a vehicle on Craigslist 2/5/16 after I had been out of a vehicle for several months, I saw an ad for 2001 Pontiac aztec for 950.00 stating that nothing is wrong with it and that it only needs a tune up. Well I arrive at the lot and the vehicle looked decent and the salesman cranks it up. It ran ok but I do notice the serpitine belt needs to be replaced because it was making a noise, I asked where there any more problems and he replied no it just needs a tune up and you'll have a decent care. I go in to speak with another sales man I'm guessing a manager of some type and I spoke about using my debit card for the transaction. He only swiped it for 800 and I had to go get the remainder from the bank. I left and had a bit of a problem getting the rest from the bank.( That were one sign to back away ) I pressed on to get the cash after another decline from the ATM because I reached my withdrawal limit, I returned with a friend to view the vehicle again. The salesman told the he sent the key out to get a copy made which I thought was odd but I guess. My friend was unable to crank and view the vehicle as I planned so we left to try a withdrawal the remainder from the bank with success, We returned and made the transaction, so happy that I was finally getting into a vehicle it slipped my mind to check out the car again. As I waited for my friend who had stepped out to smoke I signed paperwork that felt kind of rushed but I paid it no mind because I signed and gave him the balance. (Sign #2) We headed out to receive the vehicle the first saleman had already driven it outside of the gate which me and my friend thought that was odd. I get in and give my friend the nod and we drove away.... My heart dropped the car ran terrible almost if it was straining to accelerate I shook my head I just had gotten ripped off. I proceeded to drive it to the home depot which was not a pleasant drive because is seem as if it wouldn't make it. I run into the home depot and return to the vehicle with my daughter and it did not crank. I finally get it to running after a lil play and headed back to the lot. I arrived and expressed my disappointment and they acted as if it was my problem now and he kept saying it needs a tune-up . I left in disgust and meet up with my friend and took it right to an mechanic who checked the oil and immediately told me there's water leaking into the oil and pointdled out the stem that was coming out of the oil reserve. I immediately took the vehicle back. When I arrive I spoke to the guy who took my money and told him what the mechanic said and he replied that he need the mechanic report and he could have a manager to look over it THEN to conversation quickly turned into what do you expect to get for 950 dollars. I was appalled so I asked for a refund, he declined so I asked could the the amount be applied toward another vehicle he said no. So now I asked to speak with the guy he suggested that would look over the repair order and he said he was out for the next few days. So I sinks in that I would more than likely take a loss and I leave and the vehicle has been parked in my driveway since. I didnt know if it's worth it to file or suit or just sale the car and just toss it up to a costly mistake with a shady car company. Please beware with this company there's no honesty here, they are very shady and they do not stand behind their product. When I told him I really needed a working vehicle to get my kids back and forth and to make it to work he looked as if he didn't have a care in the world...
