I used Robert's Landscaping & Design to sod my front yard, but I would not recommend their services to others. I saved to have my front yard sodded, and then called around and got quotes from several companies around town. Robert's Landscaping gave a fair quote and seemed to be reputable enough. We set a datein April and his crew came on the agreed date and sodded my front yard. I stopped by the day his crew was told by the workers that they did not have any experience sodding (first red flag). I thought, however, that it was not a complicated process and I was sure they would do a competent job.
Upon completion I expressed concern about several large strips of the yard that were brown and seemed to be dead. I was assured by Robert and his crew that the grass was just dormant and would come in green within a few months. (Red Flag #2). Robert assured me himself that if the grass did not come in he would bring in new sod to replace the brown/dead pieces. I paid him the remainder I owed and began to take care of my lawn.
After a few days of the lawn setting I began to realize that the yard was never leveled. The crew he sent tilled all the old grass up but never leveled the yard so there were large trench areas under the new sod. I called Robert and explained this to him - he said not to worry because after two weeks they have the crew come out and roll the yard. The crew never came to roll the yard despite several calls I made in May and June. Robert would answer the phone and say he would come but never did.
Also, by the end of May the brown areas in the yard never became green - and turned into mud squares. I called Robert and he said not to worry because he would have his crew come out and replace the dead pieces of grass. We are now in July (note the grass was laid in April) and the yard has not been fixed. I have called Robert multiple times. If he does answer or return a call (which is rare), he assures me that when he gets sod I am first on the list. I have had this conversation 5 or 6 times since April.
The moral -- find someone else for sodding. The other quotes I got from more reputable businesses were not that much more than Robert's Landscaping and Design. It's probably worth the extra money. I'm sure Robert has done good work in the past, but from my experience he doesn't run a good business. Part of my yard looks great, but I paid a good amount of money and there are two large strips of dead weedy grass and the yard is uneven. I shouldn't have paid him when I noticed the brown grass and held the money until it was fixed, but I believed his assurance it would green -- so that is my fault. I do believe, however, that a good business takes care of its customer. In my case, Robert did not.
Also, if you have time -- do it yourself. Rent a tiller, have sod delivered to your house and do it yourself. It will be much better than what I paid for.
