Progenity Reviews

  • Jul 6, 2020

My wife was given a brochure by her doctor, Dr. Etten, at the OBGYN center at SkyRidge Medical in Lone Tree, regarding looking into genetic testing during the pregnancy of our daughter. I want to be clear that Dr. Etten did not persuade my wife to commit to the genetic testing; rather, she outlined the testing options and provided my wife with the pamphlet and contact number of Progenity's business development rep to inquire about pricing.

Given that my wife was of advanced maternal age (she is 35), they discussed that there was a likelihood that the testing would be covered, but my wife wanted to ensure that was truly the case (or was at least reasonably priced) before committing to the testing. My wife first spoke with Progenity's Jena Primsky over the phone back in October 2019 and has spoken with her several times since then. All conversations took place over phone and, unfortunately, we don't have phone recordings (only records of how many times we spoke with her). It was important to my wife that she understood the payment responsibility for her (and me) before ever committing to the testing.

During these phone calls Ms. Primsky stated multiple times that the insurance would cover the genetic testing for both her and myself; and, at worst, it would amount to approximately $185 total. My wife even asked her multiple times if she was sure about that, as we never would have proceeded with the testing if the billing was going to exceed our expectations. Ms. Primsky continued to state that if we (my wife and I) received a bill for the testing to contact her and she would make sure to explain to our insurance company that it was covered due to my wife's age and either wipe it clean or reduce the cost to the lesser $185 value that she first outlined. She mentioned several times to not stress over the billing, as she would see to it that we would be okay and we could proceed with testing worry-free

In May I received a bill for $1,200+ for just my portion (my wife's account is in the appeals state) and have received a second notice while attempting to settle this with Ms. Primsky. We've left messages with Ms. Primsky and I believe she passed this along to her billing department, but she has not contacted us personally. They are claiming that we were just misinformed with the estimate and there is nothing they can do other than put us on a payment plan. Forgive me, but this seems like a very deceitful sales tactic if you ask me. There is a significant difference between a ~$200 quote and a $1,200+ bill, which we're slapped with 7 months later and a sudden change in explanation.
