Minuteman Press International Franchise Reviews

The Minuteman Press franchise system causes its franchisees to suffer disastrous losses. The experiences of Minuteman Press franchisees in the Australian states of New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland (QLD) illustrate the consequences of the fraudulent conduct, the unconscionable conduct, the misleading and deceptive conduct and the general misconduct of Minuteman Press.

In 2009 Minuteman Press had 5 franchise stores in NSW and 3 franchise stores in QLD, i.e. total 8 stores in the two states.

In 2012 Minuteman Press had 4 franchise stores in NSW and 4 franchise stores in QLD, i.e. total 8 stores in the two states.

For the 14 years from 2005 to 2018 no less than 37 franchisees in NSW and QLD had to either close or sell their loss-making businesses. All these franchisees invested their hard-earned money in their businesses relying on the false promises of Bob Titus (MPI President), Michael Jutt (MPI Senior Executive Vice President), George Holzmacher (MPI Vice President), Andy Barrett (MPI Regional Vice President), Glen Coyle (MPI Area Manager), Jeffrey Lewis (MPI Area Manager) and Chris Jutt (MPI Area Manager).

The franchisee must pay Minuteman Press an initial fee of $61,050 when it opens a new Minuteman Press store, whilst the new franchisee must pay Minuteman Press a transfer fee of $25,850 when it buys an existing franchise store.

The profitability of Minuteman Press International Inc. is totally dependent on receiving the initial fees and the transfer fees.

The store locations of the failed Minuteman Press franchises are as follows:

Minuteman Press store statistics for South Africa

Minuteman Press closed 17 franchise stores in South Africa from 2005 to 2018.

Minuteman Press sold and transferred 41 existing franchise stores in South Africa, to new owners, from 2005 to 2018.

The Minuteman Press Store Churn Rate for South Africa is 58 stores for the period 2005 to 2018.

As at January 2005 Minuteman Press had 36 stores in South Africa; by the end of 2018 Minuteman Press increased their franchise stores to 46.

Most Minuteman Press franchisees struggle in their loss-making businesses and are desperate to sell and to get out of the franchise system. They are waiting for Minuteman Press to identify and approve buyers for their stores. The franchisees are at the mercy of Minuteman Press, who take full control of the sales process, including deciding on the selling price of the business. Often, franchisees end up closing their stores as they simply cannot continue to indefinitely finance their lossmaking businesses.

Most franchisees are financially ruined by their experiences as Minuteman Press franchisees. When franchisees buy a Minuteman franchise, they rely on the false promises by Robert Titus, Michael Jutt and Frederik Antonie van Niekerk that they will be buying into a franchise system which will provide them with world-class unmatched support and that the franchise model is proven, financially successful and profitable.

In the end, the franchisees are financially devastated whilst Minuteman Press continues as franchisor of the franchise business.

Alas, the exiting franchisee must pay the compulsory transfer fee to Minuteman Press.

Minuteman Press was investigated by the Federal Trade Commission, indicted by the FTC, found guilty by the court of misrepresentation, the judge issued a penalty of $3.47million and made a Permanent Injunction Order against Minuteman. The ground-breaking judgment appears on the FTC website (https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/press-releases/1998/10/ftc-wins-landmark-case-against-national-franchisor).

Did Minuteman Press cease its unlawful conduct after the court case?

No. Instead of ceasing its unlawful conduct as ordered by the court, Minuteman Press continued with its unlawful conduct and expanded its franchise network to other countries. Today Minuteman Press operates the system in USA, Canada, Australia, United Kingdom and South Africa. Franchisees report that Minuteman Press continues to unconscionably and unlawfully represent its franchise system to prospective franchisees in contravention of the Permanent Injunction Order.

Is the profit of a Minuteman Press franchise store at least one third of its sales?

No, notwithstanding Minuteman Press representing to prospective franchisees that the franchise store will make profits in excess of one third of its sales. In the FTC court case it was found that the profit of most Minuteman Press franchise stores is considerably less than one third of its sales.

Minuteman Press store churn in the USA

Three hundred and fifty (350), or more than 48% of the Minuteman Press franchise stores closed down / terminated from 2005 to 2018 (per Minuteman's FDD's). It is understood that many of these owners suffered losses running into hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Minuteman Press continues to open new stores; 336 new stores were opened for the period 2005 to 2018; that is the only way to sustain the franchise system.

It is reported that most of the remaining Minuteman Press store owners are struggling in their businesses, are desperately unhappy and want to get out of the system.

The franchisee unhappiness is illustrated by the more than 60% of Minuteman Press stores which were sold from 2005 to 2018 (per Minuteman's FDD's). Many desperate store owners sell their stores at huge losses; some stores sell for as little as $10,000. Reported individual store losses run into many hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Is the Minuteman Press franchise system a ripoff?

Undoubtedly yes. Minuteman Press demands a joining fee of $47,500 for a new store and the franchisee must sign the 35 year term franchise agreement. In addition, Minuteman Press supplies the store set-up equipment (at an exorbitant profit) and Minuteman Press receives a kickback from the supplier of the store's printing press.

Minuteman Press demands a transfer fee of $32,500 for the sale of an existing store AND the new store owner MUST sign a new 35 year term franchise agreement.

All franchise stores must purchase the Minuteman Press management software system.

In addition, Minuteman Press demands 6% royalties on all sales, PLUS monthly web-marketing fees, PLUS annual fees for its management software, etc.

Minuteman Press makes huge profits out of its franchisees whilst most franchisees are struggling in their businesses; most franchisees are losing money.

Below are the Minuteman USA Store closures / terminations (from 2007 to 2018) and the existing Minuteman Press USA stores which were sold from 2011 to 2018 (info was obtained from Minuteman's FDD's):
