Milanj Diamonds Reviews

  • Feb 8, 2021

I may be in the wrong here but here is my experience. I am writing this in hopes of saving someone else a heartache and a headache.

I wanted to surprise my wife with a diamond ring. I went to the store and made the purchase. The salesperson did not say anything about the mounting, its cost, or that I will be responsible for the cost of the mounting if I brought the ring back-- and did not clearly state the return policy.

I purchased the ring on Saturday and gave it to my wife on the same day. She did not like the ring and did not like the setting. The same day, she ordered a ring that she liked from a different jeweler at the same price but a much better-quality diamond.

It had snowed about 3 inches on Sunday so on Monday morning I went back to the store to return the ring. To my surprise, I was told that I could not return the ring because the store does not have a return policy. The store manager had asked if he could match the price of the ring my wife bought because the store, she bought from had a free return policy. I showed him the GIA and receipt of the ring she bought but he did could not match the price.

I was told that I would have to wait for the owner because without his consent the manager could not do anything.

The owner showed up a little over an hour later and immediately started arguing with me. I looked to the manager to intervene and asked him to mediate. The owner started throwing out retail business nonsense at me and said that he was going to lose a lot of money if he took the return. I assured him that I planned on doing future business and he said that he did not want my business or business from people like me that let their wives make all the decisions.

I asked him politely, what would happen if someone who bought an engagement ring at the store, proposed and was turned down. He said that is not his problem, he would be happy to offer them store credit so that they could buy a gold chain. I told him that I don't wear any jewelry, not even a wedding ring. He started saying that this is the exact reason he does not do business with his sister because no matter what his brother-in-law buys, she wants to return it.

He eventually agreed to take the ring back if I paid $800 for restocking. I told him that was ridiculous and that technically, Federal law guarantees a three day "cooling off period" that guarantees the retailer must take the return. The owner said if I want to litigate, he will see me in court and started to tell his staff that I am done.

I calmed him down again and he said he would take $700 cash. I did not want to further embarrass myself or waste my time, so I agreed to go to the ATM and get him the cash. The ATM at the mall was not working and I came back to the store, the owner had calmed down and I have a strong feeling that his level-headed staff told him that he was being out of line.

The manager said he would accept my payment on a card. As I handed my card over, the owner started chatting with me trying to make me feel comfortable about the whole situation. I still knew I was being bullied but did not want to risk losing more than I had, so I made small talk with him.

As we were talking, he said I was a nice guy so asked how much cash I had in my wallet. I took out my wallet and showed him the $220 in cash that I had. He asked that I give him the $200 in cash and the he would keep the ring in the setting instead of taking out the diamond and that I just give him a total of $500 instead of $700.

His manager charged my card for $300 and I gave him $200 in cash.

I cannot say that I am not to blame for not having diligently read their policies and asking about the return policy or the restocking policy but the whole thing felt disgusting, embarrassing, and I felt bullied.

If you do plan to buy from the store, please know that all sales are final. The staff will exchange anything you buy from them (for equal or lesser value), I think he said 30 days for engagement rings and 365 all other jewelry. But they do not have a return policy. I know their business started 37 years ago... it's time they update their policies and put the customer first and bring their business and its practices into the 21st century.

Good luck with your purchase.
