Lucky Strike Film Festival Reviews

  • Oct 24, 2018

Below is my Facebook Post regarding my colleague's treatment at the Lucky Strike Film Festival on September 23rd. His project, which I am a producer on, was a nominee for best screenplay, but the nomination for that was never announced nor the ones for best feature, who many of the nominees like ourselves traveled far, one person from Mexico:

Some of you know that I recently went down to Hollywood and, as I mentioned in a previous post, I was going to say more about the business part of the trip. Myself, and my friend and colleague, went in support of our friend Robert Butler, Jr., who's script for his current feature, The Alliance (which we are co-producers on) , was up for Best Screenplay at The 2nd Annual Lucky Strike Film Festival. The prize for that and best feature film would be a distribution deal through Lucky Strike Films. We attended the festivak event, which was originally set to be at Frank Sinatra's Mansion, but 5 days before moved to a small theater in Covina ( a small town an hour outside of LA), and, while we made friends and networked with some other filmmakers, what it turned out to be was not what was said it would be. In the interview below, Robert spoke some of what happened:

The evening was only an event to promote Lucky Strike and its current project, giving itself awards at the event. The awards for Best Feature and Best Screenplay were not announced! This even after some nominees flew in like Robert flew in from across the country from New York and Austin. And one came all the way internationally from Mexico.

Robert and I, and three other nominee filmmakers, went to confront the co-host/organizer and head of Lucky Strike Films, Roman/Romane Simon to question why those categories were ignored. He said that they were "going by a printout" and that those categories were left off. He went on to say that he would shoot the nominees an email with who the winners were when he gets to his office the next morning. We kept pressing him for straight answers and asked if he even had a winner chosen for the categories. He said he did, but would have to email the next morning. He called out to his friend and then got away from us. Along with Robert, we felt extremely disrespected as filmmakers for that treatment and being mislead like that, especially with how some of us traveled from out of California to attend.

One other thing, we paid $40 each for VIP tickets, which turned out to be bust when they let everyone who did not pay into the VIP party and later after party. The VIP area made you pay $3.00 for water and also ran out of food within minutes.

After some emails back and forth with Roman apologizing, Roman only said that he would give Robert an award, which is a certificate. As far as we know, Lucky Strike is not awarding any nominees the deals which they mentioned as part of the festival prizes.

We learned later that for the first Lucky Strike festival last year, the organizer gave himself the best feature award. We have also learned of various reports online of complaints against the festival organizer.

While I have heard that such film festival experiences such as this are unfortunately quite common, it's STILL not right. While there is nothing wrong with promoting a film, there are still ethics and honesty in this business in which to do this, which Lucky Strike did not practice.

We want to warn anyone who is looking to submit to film fests to AVOID THE LUCKY STRIKE FILM FESTIVAL!
