Subject: Review of John Johnson Renovation Construction & Consultation

Phone number of the company: 443-528-4731; email: [email protected]; website: jjrenovation.com

Review: This published review includes factual statements and is supported by pictures. As a homeowner, I always like to post follow-up reviews as well as read reviews made by others so that I can make an informed decision when purchasing/selecting goods and services, especially when it comes to renovating my home.

On July 12, 2020, I was made aware of John Johnson Renovation via the NextDoor App. I contacted this company for the following services:

1) Fix/ repair all cracks in the walls and repair the drywall (3 bedrooms and basement)

2) Caulking around the front door frame and a section of the baseboard in the living room

3) Installation of four window blinds

4) Tile installation in the basement

5) Installation of a plug for the dryer into the main electric panel

Jobs 1 & 2 – Drywall repair and caulking baseboard in the living room

On July 14, 2020, one of the employees came to my home to fix items 1 and 2. When the employee left, he did not clean up after himself. I found caulk residue on my carpet and joint compound on all three floors in each bedroom. See pictures 1- 4. I made the employee aware of this and allowed him the opportunity to fix the mess. I also had to sweep my floors after the employee left as this was not done. The white particles on the floors are from the joint compound. I tried to capture in red the more obvious spots. In some of the pictures, it looks as if there is white dust on the floors (this is the residue that was left by the employee). Fortunately, the employee was able to remove the caulk from my carpet. (Please note, this is not all of the pictures that were taken.)

Job 2 – Caulking around the front door frame

I don’t have any words for this. The pictures speak for themselves. Refer to pictures 5 – 6. John, the owner assured me that he was going to provide me with a new frame. However, this was never done.

Job 3 – Window blind install

The blinds were installed on Thursday, July 16th. I have a double window in my living room, and the blinds that were installed were not the same color. One blind was an off white, and the other was white. I purchased one off-white blind and three white blinds. I requested that the blinds be swapped out so that the two blinds in the living room would be the same color. Even after that one of the blinds was installed on the wrong side. The blind install was corrected on July 23, 2020.

Friday, July 17, 2020, at 7:15 AM I made the owner aware of my issues. He assured me that he would fix all of my issues, and I believed him. Refer to picture 7.

On July 19, 2020, at 12:39 PM I informed the owner that I was not pleased with his employees work, and did not want the employee to come back to my house to finish the service. John, the owner, then assured me that he would fix it. Again, I believed him. Refer to picture 8.

Job 4 – Tile installation

There is not much to say about this job. I needed about eight pieces of tile installed and grouted. The owner used the wrong grout and failed to ensure that it would be consistent with the light-colored grout. When I made him aware of the issues, he informed me that he could grout over the top of the grout that he installed. I spoke with other contractors and was informed that this is not the right course of action. Refer to picture 9.

Updates

On Sunday, July 26, 2020, at 3:39 PM I sent a note to John, the owner, of the work left to be redone. This is after payment of services have already been made.

I’ve sent several messages for the owner to provide me with his availability to resolve the outstanding issues, but to no avail. I informed him on 7/29 that I assume that because I have yet to get his availability that he will not be fixing the remaining issues at my house. No response from the owner after that. Refer to picture 10.

I am embarrassed because I believe that I have been bamboozled and cheated out of the services for which I have paid for, and have to hire another contractor to fix the shoddy work as you can see from the pictures above. I did not get any resolution from the owner. I was very patient and tried to be as understanding as possible, but I simply do not have the time to ensure that a contractor is doing the job the right way. I expect the contractor to be the expert and provide quality work. I have yet to see that in this scenario. The only job that was properly done was job 5 (Installation of a plug for the dryer into the main electric panel).
