Garden State Veterinary Services Reviews

  • Jun 18, 2018

While it was with my consent at the end to euthanize my dog, their incompetence and misrepresentation placed me in a position of either allowing my dog to wake up from anesthesia to die a painful death after a failed surgery where her large, intra-abdominal tumor was not removed or even debulked, septic peritonitis, and two jejunal perforations - or spare her horrible and possibly protracted suffering unto death.

A pet owner's ignorance is no excuse for veterinary incompetence. The dog was supposed to be treated by a board-certified specialist as is standard protocol for veterinary surgery, especially internal surgery. Garden State Veterinary Services failed to provide us with that. Instead, a young, lesser experienced, non board certified surgeon (Dr. Sarah Round) who lacked the skill set was assigned and failed. Dr. Round finally became board certified in 2018.

This traumatic experience is emblematic of the systemic incompetence that exists at Garden State Veterinary Services in Iselin.

Numerous horror stories about this place abound online including cockroach photos on Yelp. The entire staff is young, all licensed during the current decade (2010s), which translates to limited experience. Most of the doctors (6 out of 10) attended veterinary college in the Caribbean at schools that routinely accept students who are rejected from American veterinary universities. Moreover, the facility is very small, unusual for a 24-7 veterinary emergency hospital that purports to offer quality care.

The onus is on Dr. Thomas Scavelli, who founded this dump. Dr. Scavelli has owned and operated Garden State Veterinay Specialists in Tinton Falls, New Jersey since its founding in 1994. The Tinton Falls location is large, fully equipped, and staffed by seasoned professionals with decades of experience. In 2012 Dr. Scavelli expanded operations up the Garden State Parkway and opened the Iselin location. In so doing, he severely compromised quality care. In my situation, we should have been sent to Tinton Falls where my dog might have survived at the hands of a more experienced, board certified surgeon.
