BB&T Reviews

  • Jan 12, 2019

Do not open an account with BB&T, it is a predatory bank that goes out of its way to charge its customers as many fees as it can. They still do thing that most other major banks have stopped doing due to major complaints and legal action. Here are a few examples of the shady practices they use.

They post Charges to your account before they post cash deposits. What this means is if you deposit $100.00 in cash on the same day a Debit come through, they will post the debit first then the deposit so if the debit causes your account to go negative, they can charge you a $36.00 overdraft fee.

They post item largest to smallest. What that means is if you have 5 items that post on the same day and you have enough to cover 4 items, they will post the largest items first, so they can bounce as many items as possible, so they can charge multiple $36.00 overdraft fees.

They Put Transfer from places like Zelle or eBay under pending so they can post the debits you have first and then charge the $36.00 overdraft fee even thought the money was transferred in the account before the debit shows.

They do show accurate up to date information on charges made with your debit card to get you to overdraft, so they can charge $36.00 fee

They charge $36.00 for every Overdraft, this is one of the highest fees from any bank.

They pretend to give you a personal banker at the branch, mine is Jennifer Allen. Unfortunately, you will only get form letter responses from your personal banker if they even bother to respond at all, even under the threat of leaving a negative review. They simply don’t care.

They have an Email to contact the CEO. You will only receive a form letter response from the same form letter response you received from your personal banker verbatim.

I am extremely sorry that I moved my money to this bank, I hate writing negative reviews of anyone, but after over twelve months of being issues, with no resolutions I feel as if I have no choice.

I am so tired of BB@T stealing my money. I am a single parent and i draw disabilty. Well this month BB@T took all of my money. Everytime i call they just tell me that it is fees. I owed them 149.60. Well today the amount is over 600.00. How do they keep doing this i am on a budget. They also charged me 72.00 over 6 times. I cannot take it anymore.

This has happened to me two different times now. I have so much in my account and I proceed to purchase items, BB&T puts them as pending charges but the charges reflect in my available balance then wait a week to send the charges through and hit me with overdraft fees.

We had a home equity line of credit on our home through BB&T. We had no balance on the line of credit.

The line of credit required that we maintain certain insurance requirements on the home. We opted to no longer carry the required insurance amounts.

Many months after the policy had lapsed, BB&T notified us that we did not meet their insurance requirements. They demanded that we buy the required insurance. We informed our banker that we did not wish to purchase the insurance. We informed our banker, Jeremy Beakes in Wilmington, NC, that we had no first mortgage on the home and no balance on the line of credit. We informed him that we didn't wish to carry the insurance. We informed him that we had made the decision to self insure the home as we had liquid assets greater than the value of the home. We said that they could terminate the line of credit if this was no acceptable.

Many more months later, BB&T sent us notice that they had purchased insurance on our behalf. They purchased a very expensive policy that protected them but provided no coverage to us. Astoundingly, they paid the insurance company for retroactive coverage for about six months. In other words, they paid for six months of insurance protection for a time period that had already passed. In other words, they bought insurance to protect against a loss that could not possibly happen because the time period in question had already passed. BB&T charged our account thousands of dollars for this coverage.

We contacted our banker, Jeremy Beakes in Wilmington, NC and asked that they credit our account for the months of retroactive coverage that they had purchased. We carefully explained that insurance purchased for a period that had already passed made no sense at all. We said that they could charge us for the months that had passed after the insurance had been purchased but that we were not willing to be billed for insurance for a time period that had already passed.

Jeremy Beakes refused to credit our account. He changed his story multiple times when explaining that the insurance was required. He said that banking regulations of some type require them to have insurance in place at all times. I said that they did not have insurance in place for many months and that buying it retroactively was fraudulent and a scam. He kept ignoring the fact that insurance purchased after the fact has zero value. He would never acknowledge that basic fact.

Jeremy Beakes claimed that he ran our complaint up to his management and they all refused to refund us for the fraudulently purchased insurance. We complained to many other people at BB&T. All of them stonewalled us and refused to credit our account for the thousands of dollars that they had fraudulently charged to our account.

Eventually, we gave up. We terminated our line of credit and the associated insurance. We decided to move all four of our business and personal bank accounts elsewhere. We also decided to terminate all six of our business and personal credit cards to another bank. We have not yet made the move because doing so is a huge hassle with the number of accounts and credit cards in question.

Recently, we received a notice from a law firm that BB&T is being sued for force-placing insurance policies against many homeowners who had mortgages or lines of credit. The lawsuit alleges that they were receiving kickbacks on the policies that they purchased for their customers and required their customers to pay for. It is a class action suit. BB&T has agreed to a settlement. Obviously, they are not admitting to guilt. However, if they have no guilt, why did they agree to pay a huge settlement to a large number of people?

Don't bank at BB&T! Don't do business with Jeremy Beakes!

For 4/1/2015 to 6/30/2015 period

BBT Activities: There was service charge for any account.

My Argument: when I signed contract with Citi bank, my accounts were set up with no service charges. During this period, BBT abided the contract I had signed with Citi bank.

At 6/30/15

My request: I made request to transfer all money from my “Business Money Rate Savings” account to “Business Value 200 Checking” account and close “Business Money Rate Savings” account.

BBT Activities: the clerk didn’t do it and left the account open with $9.76 although he told me the account was closed.

My Argument: why the clerk didn’t tell me the truth, whether that was intentionally or just mistake?

From 7/1/2015 to 2/29/2015 period

BBT Activities: There was a “Cash Management Online” service charge $35 from my “Business Value 200 Checking” account.

My Argument: I never set up “Cash Management Online” service with BBT and even don’t know that I have this service with BBT. BBT never tells me either by phone or letter anything about this service.

On 12/23/2015

My request: I noticed that my “Business Money Rate Savings” account had not been closed as I requested at 6/30/2015, I asked clerk to close my account.

BBT Activities: Again, the clerk said my account was closed, but actually left open with $9.76.

My Argument: I really don’t know this is BBT system issue or clerk issue?

From 3/1/2016 to 5/31/2016 period

BBT Activities:

There were “Cash Management Online” service charges $35 from my “Business Value 200 Checking” account each month.

There were “Cash Management Online Business Banking” service charges $35 from my “Business Money Rate Savings” account which had $9.76 each month.

There were “Cash Management Online CD Account Maintain” service charges $40 from my “Business Money Rate Savings” account which had $9.76 each month.

My Argument: in these three months period, BBT added two other charges to my “Business Money Rate Savings” account: “Cash Management Online Business Banking” and “Cash Management Online CD Account Maintain” which I never get noticed. And BBT charged me “Cash Management Online CD Account Maintain” even I don’t have any CD account!

From 6/1/2016 to 8/31/2016 period

BBT Activities:

There were “Cash Management On” service charges $35 from my “Business Value 200 Checking” account each month.

There were “Cash Management Online CD Account Maintain” service charges $40 from my “Business Value 200 Checking” account each month.

There were “Cash Management Online Business Banking” service charges $35 from my “Business Money Rate Savings” account which had $9.76 each month.

There were “Cash Management Online CD Account Maintain” service charges $40 from my “Business Money Rate Savings” account which had $9.76 each month.

My Argument: in these three months period, BBT added one more charge to my “Business Value 200 Checking” account: “Cash Management Online CD Account Maintain” which I never get noticed and even I don’t have any CD account!

The Keys:

“Cash Management Online” service with BBT:

I never get notice that I have BBT “Cash Management Online” service associated with my accounts.

I never get notice that BBT “Cash Management Online” service has fee associated with it.

BBT charged me total $1158.75 for nothing!

BBT “Cash Management Online” service charge changes without notice and agreement:

At first eight months, the service charge was $35 monthly; then the following three month, the service charge became $120 monthly; and then following three month the service charge became $160 monthly.

There was no notice or explanation why these service charges keep on increasing.

I don’t have any CD account, why there were service charges for “Cash Management Online CD Account Maintain”. BBT put charge on the account I even don’t have!

BBT charged me total $75 per month from my “Business Money Rate Savings” but the money was deducted from my “Business Value 200 Checking”

BBT Customer Services:

After found these unauthorized charges, I went to BBT branch at Houston downtown and talked with Eric Contreras. But I was told BBT can only refund me $470. I want to know why BBT decided to refund me $470 and why BBT decided why not to refund me rest of $648.75? What’s the underlying reason for BBT’s decision?

When I asked for any document about the service charges on my account, Mr. Contreras emailed me fee disclosure on September 27th, 2016, which should sent to me on before the first day of BBT took Citi customer accounts.

The fee disclosure Mr. Contreras sent me doesn’t indicate the charges applied to my account .

After I found these issues and want to discuss with Mr. Contreras, he refused to talk with me about the detail and told me that he can only refund me $470, TAKE IT OR NOT.

After numerous arguments with Mr. Contreras, and his manager Andrew Delauro, they agreed to refund me $840 but still held my $318.75 for no reason.

I had received a car loan through BB&T bank several years ago. March 11th the full amount of the load was paid off. I received a letter from them dated March 11th confirming the load was paid off and also a signed document from them releasing all rights and interest in the vehicle. Life was good. Until April 4th when my credit monitoring service emailed me stating I had received a negative credit report. I looked and sure enough BB&T initiated a negative credit report which accused me of being over thirty days past due on a loan balance of ZERO DECIMAL ZERO ZERO dollars.

Trying to navigate their convoluted website is a headach. Nowhere did I find anyone to contact. Finally I had gotten a hold of women identified as Sarah. Who after letting out one of those 'oh no not again sighs' said let me put you in touch with credit reporting dispute department. Which I think just automatically disconnects because thats exactely what happened.

Yes thats right folks pay your debt in full to BB&T bank and they will STILL initiate a negative credit report telling the world you are thirty days past due on a balance of $0.00. Not easy getting this corrected nor is is it easy explaining this crap to prospective employers either. Thanks for nothing BB&T.

Bad financil advice from bank. I called in 08/2015 I was advised of a high closeing cost loan and i would not be able to get a mortage on the property at this time they advised me to take cash advanced to buy the home in question so i closed on the property in november of 2015. so I take the deed to the bank to borrow the money so i can pay off the credit cards and the bank will not lend me any money on the home. This bank led me down the road of 29.99% apr on credit cards and left me out to dry. This bb&t bank has destroyed my life and left me doomed to a life of 30 years in credit card debt all over $15,000. when i filed a complaint with the FTC they deny it all. What scum of the earth this bank is. How can they advice me to do this and leave me high and dry.

BB &T has continuously been charging my account with overdraft fees. Even when speaking with the bank rep to discuss how they can warrant the charges, her list of transactions are not in the same order as presented on my end. I have made deposits tto my account to cover purchases about to be made and they still come up with a way to charge me and then turn around and tell me they will not reimburse the charges for 2 years!!! What!

I review the accounts on a daily basis as I also have business accounts and they continuously repoort the charges inaccurately to charge additional fees and shoould be stopped!

Do not use BBT bank at all

The other day I was doing my bills to be paid on the 3d pf November with BB&T and had logged off and I went back online to check my account as I always do after just 15 short mtns, and noticed it had already taken the money I was to pay my Power bill with out as if I sceduled it for that very day when I know (as God as my wittness) I did no such a thing and had taken out $30 already for what they claimed was a overdraw of just $3 (wow poor babies need the money more than poor people )plus the $30 for the Power bill, but anyhow I checked it the day after and it had moved up to $74 that fast and as i speak today which is Saturday Oct. 24,1,2015 it is at a whopping $140 ( I might add I'm on a fixed income like a lot of good folks) and have my car payment coming up plus other bills, and am very panic stricken, depressed, overwelmed and do not know where to turn to resolve this purpose mistake on there part,I went to the bank to talk to them about it ( a freind suggested I do so) when I knew better not to talk to greed to its face,I am in dire need of help from these criminals whom I feel are fleacing my account which I have rent coming up to boot to say the least, I think this insitituion should be put out of business as I have read of others fleaced by the corrupt polices of a place I once actually trusted for so long.

My husband and I both lost our full time jobs, mine shut down, his moved to Mexico. When my husband lost his job about two years ago I started applying for a modification through two different org. that help you for free. BB&T kept saying they never got my applications, so I started doing them myself and they would either stick to the same story or deny me based on not resolving my hardship, now if I could resolve my hardship I woldn't need a modification. I then tried hiring a lawyer who told them their reason for denying me was not a HAMP guideline, so they approved me sent me my package I filled it out returned it and they said they never got it. So I applied again for about the 10th time and have been denied again based on not resolving my hardship and then 4 days later they sent me a new loan modification application. In the mean time since my first application they have racked up numerous fees for everything under the sun and I believe I shouldn't have to pay any fees past the very first modification that I filled out and sent to them. They are using this as a game to rack up fees and then take the house and make me pay, how is this legal to keep playing this same game over and over and over.

The bank has charged me $396 in overdraft fees but there was no overdraft! I have went to many levels of the bank and no one has a valid response, or an answer as to why I was charged like I was! My paycheck is direct deposited and will be enough to cover the fraudulant fees, but it does not allow me to pay my bills now, or supply my kids with food, school supplies, or even gas for my commute. I am left completley broke with no cushion to fall back on, and the bank has done nothing to fix their error! I am livid! I need my money back and this issue resolved. I feel like I am working to pay the bank emplyees salaries while my kids starve.

I have been banking with BB&T for years and these practices have started in the last year. I have had multiple $36 dollar charges to my account and looking at their website they make it look like what they are doing is right. If you download your statement you can see that what they are doing is fraudulent.

What they have done, and I had a customer service rep fromBB&T tell me on the phone that I was correct and that they had made what she called, a mistake. Bascially what they do is hold a deposit and wait for a charge to come through. Then they take $36 and then deposit your money. I have had them hold cash for 24 hours and of course bounce anything that comes in during that time. This has been going on for months.

We had a dog die recently and so we returned some flea medicine. When the return hit my account, another $36. When I call to ask why they did that I get a run-around and now they are charging me $2 for each call. I have downloaded all of their policies and there is no mention of a $2 charge and was never informed that they would charge $2 for a call.

I have since moved to another bank. I went online with my new bank, created an account and scheduled a transfer from BB&T. After 10 days and already making a deposit to my new account, I thought that there was a problem and the transfer did not go through. Then I made a small charge, BBT charges me $36 and bounces the transfer, and makes a post that is 3 days post dated.

Now I am told by BB&T that I can either pay all the fees or they will close the account in 45 days and send my account for collections. In the meantime they keep charging more fees.
