American Education Services Reviews

  • Nov 15, 2022

This company is the worst company I've ever gotten student loans serviced from. I've been with them since 2007. Everything that could possibly go wrong with your student loans will happen with them. It doesn't matter how conscientious or on-time you are with your payments, their system and agents will screw up your credit by misappropriating your payments by over-paying one loan and under-paying another, leading to deliquency, and you may not even find out about it until its too late. I've had to file countless credit disputes because of their human and systematic errors. If you request a forbearance/ hardship/ you'll have to fight for it, because they may deny the request due to petty reasons (i.e., an error on the paperwork, something they can't read, etc.), all the while impacting your credit until their bureaucratic requests are met. Customer service also leaves something sorely to be desired. It has to be pretty bad for me to take the time out to write this review. I dread even having to call, talk or deal with them. They simply do not work (for you, for themselves, or for anyone for that matter). Save yourself the stress and headache and just borrow from someone...anyone else but AES. #SMH.

I've been getting scammed by this company for many many years, in fact 15 years since I graduated college. Never! have they applies my principal payments to the actual principle... And as of late, they have started charging unpaid interest and NO OPTION TO PAY -which I am sure down the road will result in delinquency ...and more late fees. What makes me furious is that I am setup on auto draft and when I check my account it says I AM PAID AHEAD! Here is a sickening example. I had one unsubsidized loan for $2500 (and change)... and after more than 10 years of paying that 6.7% loan and literally 20+ principle payments, I still owe $1225.

This is ridiculous, I've paid this loan off 10 times over. Funny how my payments for this loan were applied to my 2.7% interest loans. How much do you plan on ripping me off for, sum total, over he course of 30 years - AES? For those of you who do not believe me, please search ripoff and other consumer advocacy sites for AES SUCCESS and their deceptive practices as well as their new scam – the variable 'unpaid interest" scam that appears to fluctuate depending on whatever they feel like stealing for that period of time.

I am so sick of this company... Had they applied my payments correctly, as opposed to strategically applying them to benefit themselves and steal from consumers like me, my loans would be nearly paid-off now. Disgusting and deceptive...My only retailiation is Karma... and to that end, I foresee a class action in the coming years. If I had the time, I'd start one now.

Dealing with American Education Services (AES) is very difficult. Each time you speak wth them on the phone, they give you a different story and generally its not the truth. They require you to provide them with all kinds of paperwork before they will even look into your questions. They are attempting to collect 4 student loans from me. I took out 2 student loans from the federal government while I was in School. I never had any dealings with AES until after I left school and all of a sudden they started harassing me. I told them 2 of the loans they were trying to collect were not mine and demanded they provide me with a copy of the Master Note I signed and each of the account sheets and receipts I signed when the loans were made to me. They said since they were student loan, none of the credit laws applied to them and they did not have to give me any documentation. I filed an appeal with the Student Loan Ombudsman's Office. That did no good, After months and month of waiting, that office changed staff about every month, they finally did find a copy of the Master Note, but none of the attachments showing how many loans, the amounts of the loans, the dates of the loans or the interest rates were included. The Ombudsman's Office said that AES had finally given them that much and I should be happy to get that. They agreed that since these were student loans, none of the credit laws applied and they did not have to provide documentation showing that i really owed the loans or that I had ever signed for the loans. In fact, it appeared to me that the Ombudsman's office got tired of me calling them every two weeks so just ruled in favor of AES to get rid of me. At least their staff were nice and polite but they were always new.

The Federal Student Loan Office of the Department of Education does have a record of the student loans, reported to them by the college I attended. (I believe the college secretary recording the loans accidently recorded some other students loans on the line across from my name instead of across from his or her name. I do not believe there was any fraud, just a simple mistake, that a review of the actual loan documents were correct.) These records are the only records AES has to prove I owe the debt. They have no original documents, no proof that I received the loans or signed the required receipts. However these records clearly show the interest rates of the loans. AES chooses to ignore the interest rates listed and has been charging me much higher interest rates from the begonning when the Dept. of Education assigned the loans to AES. I have called them several times asking them to correct this mistake. I have written to them twice. First they told me I have to send papers proving what the interest rates were. They they said only the Department of Education could provide them information. They they said they didn't have to change the interest rates, I would just have to pay it. The bottom line is that they refuse to make the corrections. I first contacted them asking for the changes in October 2017, telling them that I wanted to pay off the loans and needed an accurate payoff amount. I believe one of the reasons for all their delay and stalling is to prevent me from paying off the loans so they can collect more interest.

In addition, even though I have either made my payments on time or been on deferral or been on an income based payment plan where my payments were zero, they reported that I was late in making my payments. When I pointed out to them that my payments were zero so how could I be late, they said I should have sent back the invoice with no payment so that made me late. They have purposely ruined my credit because I filed the appeal with the Ombudsman.

Some of their employees are rude and nasty on the phone, not all of them but enough of them that I hate dealing with them. None of them seem to leave notes in the file so each time its like I have never called. They don't read the letters or make notes and in fact one emplyee told me they ignored letters.

I have had three loans through AES for the past 10 years with two different co-signers. In the past they have contacted the co-signer or the one loan and discussed the other two loans which the person wasn’t involved in. They have called unrelated family members when my loan fell 10 days late. Not months but days late trying to talk to me. The person they contacted is not on the loan or any of the loans and has absolutely no business knowing about my student loans. How they even obtained that persons number is beyond my understanding. The loans have a variable interest rate which changes monthly making it near impossible to ever see the loan come down in terms of being paid off. I was put on permanent disability many years ago and had attempted numerous times to get into a more realistic payment amount given my financial situation. They refused to help in any way. Even changing the due date was a hassle when they stated I needed to pay a month in advance to change it. If I couldn’t come up with the payment on that date how was it even expected to come up with two months payment in one month. They are very unwilling to work to help payments be manageable. $360 a month is a ridiculous amount of money for a loan payment with variable interest. Who knows what the payment will be next month. At the time of obtaining these loans none of these terms were made clear to me. Horrible student loan company that makes harrassaing phone calls on a multiple time a day schedule even when the payment is not yet even late.

My complaint is against American Education Services (AES), who is a private student loan company. I first encountered AES when I was forced to get a loan through them in 2009 because this was the only loan company my medical school accepted.

When I signed up for the AES loan, I was required to use my mother as co-signer. At that time they did not clearly state that the loan would have a "variable interest rate", which is clearly a deceptive loan practices that prey on students.

I am still appalled how the American government is allowing AES to use variable interest rates and pray on students who are trying to improve themselves educationally. After going through all my forbearance options, I was forced to pay the extremely high monthly payments of 200$, which of course I paid with help of my mom. In late 2014, I could not make any more payments, my mom had been diagnosed with breast cancer, it was a trying time for my family, both emotionally and economically. I did not have the financial means to make any payments, my mom who was helping me before to make the monthly payments was now preparing to go through her breast cancer and treatments.

I had to go back home to take care of my mom and family, but the AES did not care that my mom was sick, in their eyes, I had run out of forbearance options, so I was responsible. I thought maybe if I can contact them and explain the situation, they can log it in their system, that I wasnot avoiding my responsibilities, I was just not able to make the payments. But that of course, did not help. Days of delinquency climbed from 60days to 90 days and now more than 120 days. Now that I have a part-time job, I wanted to help reduce my monthly payments because, I dont think any human being can afford paying $535 monthly payments!! Furthermore, when I tried to remedy my past due amount, I explained I'm only working part-time but I want help in reducing my monthly payments so I can make payments, and they stated sure, we will remove your delinquent record if you pay $11,627 dollars. WHAT?!?!?! Thats just plain insanity, how is it possible that a company can demand that EXTREMELY high amount, knowing that you have no income, its EXTORTION!!!

As for my mom, with all of her medical bills she accrued during her treatments and radiation, she could not help me financially. I forgot to mention, that when they informed me of this payoff amount of $11,000+ to return my account to "up to date" status, the company was calling every day, harassing me for payment at my house, even after I said to them several times that I did not have the income or money. In the past year, they have even harassed my mom, who is the co-signer, by negatively affecting her credit, all of her creditworthyness is being removed. What does that mean? Well, that all of her credit cards are pulling out, removing her credit cards!!! Thats plain illegal practice and harrassment....its an injustice. When I tried to figure out the interest rate, its quite unstable, I have no idea how AES comes with their extrement variable rates because my loan interest keeps accruingd. How can a balance in 2014 climb from $1,528 to now $11,627.....do we, as consumers, have no rights to appeal this extortion!!!!!

Earlier this month I recieved around 6 letters, and an email from them claiming I owe them $11,278.84. They claim I was late on a payment(the first bill I received was in July), so I doubt this. They are billing my for $208. They also claim that my IBR is up. I have never held a loan with them, and I have never consolidated with them. Both my loans are with navient. I called navient, and they verified that none of my loans have been transferred to them.

I also checked with the U.S. Department of Education, and there is no record of them anywhere. Furthermore all their notices arrive on the weekend, so you cannot contact customer assistance, to refute your bill. In order to contact via email, you have to enter the last four digits of your social security number. All this seems highly suspect. If they call me I plan to contact an attorney, as I have never given them consent to call me.

AES is horrible. I borrowed money from AES to finish my college education and supplement while I was student teaching. It seemed like a good option at the time. I began paying on them, a bit at a time, when I could while I was in school...Then I finshed school and unfortunately had to take a job i(at an alternative school) well under the payscale of a traditional public school teacher.

Regardless of my financial situation, I scrape together what I can and my two AES loans are paid each month...however I still get harrassing calls and late fees. This happens every month, no matter what I do. They keep "mis-applying" payments and dispite the fact that I have proof that the checks were received and cashed in time...I have aquired late fees.

Earlier today, after receiving about 6 calls (I was at work and could not answer at work), I was able to answer the phone at about 7 O'clock... The representative was extremely rude and abusive... I explained that this happens each month and I am frustrated, etc... she insisted that I was lying and stated that I owed them for a late payment... I asked to speak with a supervisor...that wasn't going to happen.

I went round and round and despite the fact that I quoted the informatioin from my bank statement (proving I paid) the woman became more abusive. It is not a good practice to harrass customers even if they are late, since my payments have not been, I am even more disgusted. I wish they would pass a law that would allow people to completely dismiss private loans just so these people could go out of business...for lack of a better term... They stink!

Since 2012, we took out 4 student college loans through AES. We chose the rate that had the rate reduction if paid on time for the entire loan. Early last year, we received some money through an inheritance in so I went into their site and chose the "payoff" balances so we could pay them in their entirety. I paid all the balances that they listed.

And then here comes the problem: Months later, I went into their site to make sure all the loans were paid off. Lo and behold, 3 of them had interest due (around $1.00) because after I "paid off" their loans, they applied monthly interest after that and did not inform me of such.

Needless to say, we lost all benefits of getting any monies back for paying all loans on time because they list the loans as having "late payment"

Beware that if you believe you have paid your loans, AES may come behind and tack on interest. If you do not follow up (because they will not inform you), you may lose any incentives AES provided you with when you took out the loan(s).

I would like to issue a complaint against American Education Services (AES), who is a private student loan company. I was forced to get a loan through them in 2007 because of the waiting period associated with federal student loans. When I signed for the AES loan, which required my fathers co-signature, they used deceptive loan practices and did not clearly state that the loan would have a variable interest rate. This type of loan is what brought down the entire housing market almost crashing our economic system, and yet the American government is allowing AES to use variable interest rates and pray on college students. After having them on auto-pay for almost 5 years, over-paying by a whole lot, the loan principal barely moves. I recently was laid off and I went to my online account to ask for forbearance, but my account disallowed me from requesting it or from even turning off my auto debit, which is common borrower customer service on federal student loans. AES said I did not qualify for forbearance and could only turn my auto debit off a month at a time. When I inspect the details of the loan interest, it does not follow logic as there is mysterious disappearing interest because of the way AES logs it in my account which keeps accrued interest and running balance separate. It does not follow any interest algorithm I was taught in college, and appears to me that portions of my payment disappear and they cannot or will not properly explain it. Please do something about AES? I am willing to provide all my paperwork to confirm my statements.

This company AES has not been forwarding the monies paid to their accounts of banks whom are the lenders to student loans.

They have not responded to repeated requests for verification of payments made by me nor are they willing to accept bank statements showing proof of payments .

The interest rate on the loans have skyrocketed and the payments requested by them are quadrupled. They claim this is their right!

What is the validity of the original student loan contract stating the interest and payments ????

AES makes repeated harrasing phone calls even after the payments have been made to their over inflated charges!

Never deal with these corrupt fraudsters . Stay away from AES . Their management should be investigated but the state authorities have done nothing even after being contacted and informed. The Pennsylvania Attorney Generals office is incompetent in reigning these people in.
