Thumbtack.com is the uber of home improvement. Shady liars with 0 integrity but with a nice cosmetic sheen. The best thing about thumbtack is maybe their orange color scheme To remind you of a more established company like home depot). There are tons of complaints by "thumbtack pros" who pay to give quotes and net clients through the app. Those pros say thumbtack is a fake leads generating service. My outscam is on the client side. I am a normal everyday homeowner like many americans. Not made of money, want a cost-effective way to maintain and upgrade my home but still want to be fair and ethical to other working americans. This site promises you basic consumer safety and protection by throwing around meaningless words like "trust and integrity" and "100% thumbtack guarantee" it is a scam. There is absolutely zero protection or support by thumbtack. 1) no guarantee you get a "pro" -- thumbtack does not check or verify licenses, qualifications, or experience 2) no guarantee to prevent you from getting scammed by "pros" -- thumbtack has no training or protocols for "pros" on best practices of how to use thumbtack 3) definitely no guarantee for consumer safety and when you are inevitably ripped off by their "pro" thumbtack will do absolutely nothing. Incredibly unethical scam company throwing around words like "100% guarantee". Consumers stay away!!

Since 2011 I am a member of Thumtack.com. I have constant complained about being ripped-off with fake leads, fraud acts from so call clients seeking disc jockeys. I am very shocked this type of behavior still going on here in America. I hope we as professionals can get enough complaints to file a class-action law suit.

Thumbtack states we all must go through a background check. 1. background checks don't take 3 seconds. 2. I have set up 2 other accounts with wither a different email or last name and passed my background check. 3. Thumbtack provide a lead that sent me a fraudulent check had my bank account closed and unable to open with any other bank, so I am bank less. this person then went on to hack my computer and phone, got into all my personal information and took my identity and still is using my information. Random Facebooks, went into my domain and made fake emails to use. The list goes on and event when i reported this they still had his profile up three days later and not once have they responded to me and charged me 125 for that lead that has destroyed everything. Also, there has to be a law or something against a lead reaching out to three pros and all three pros are charged for that lead. There has to be some law against this. Provided me with a criminal and made me pay for it. United States

I stopped using Thumbtack over a year ago. Regardless they keep putting charges on my debit account. They have no way to contact them other than text chat, which is not manned. I cannot converse with anyone from the company to resolve the problem.

When I first signed up with them years ago, I could make phone calls, even had my own rep, easy to get problems solved. Liked the system they had for getting job leads. Then they changed almost everything. I tried to deposit money into my account and it didn't work even though it was the same account number that showed up on their system. After chatting back and forth for over 2 hrs and numerous tries on their part, they said it was my banks fault and that I should get them to straighten it out. Upon checking with my bank my statement it showed 13 withdraws of $0 by thumbtack. It WASN"T MY BANK! When I chatted back, they still couldn't get it right.

I had $51.92 in my account for over 2 years. When I asked to close out my account and send me the money, they said that they don't issue refunds.

I asked, on numerous occasions, to speak to someone on the phone. We don't do that, it is quicker to chat or email (they answer emails in 2days). My initial 2 hr+ chat could have been done in 5 minutes with a phone call instead of typing in information, waiting for a reply, then typing an answer, etc etc.

I was trying to start up using them again but ran into their "customer no service" so they lost me and all the friends and sub-contractors that I used to steer to Thumbtack. Too bad.

Warning to ALL Consumers: Thumbtack, along with Home Advisor and several other "referral" services to Consumers are paid for by the actual 'Referee" [or Contractor, for instance].

There is NO legitimate due diligence on the part of Thumbtack, Home Advisor, Angie's List, or even the BBB.

They ALL make their money the same way: By charging the company and then giving false and misleading "high and happy Reviews" online.

It is a scam.

Too many Connecticut Contractors that are known scam-artists are on these web sites with falsified positive reviews. Buyer Beware.

I just would like to support the other person who has written in about a tutor named Dr. Tae Hoon Ha in Fresno, CA. He claims he is a Yale graduate and medical doctor. He is on multiple websites, including Varsity Tutor as well as Tutor.com. He completed one or two tutoring sessions with us. It went fine, asked for a recommendation or review and then offered us a discount if we paid in bulk sessions. Then, after that, he quickly had many outrageous excuses for not being able to tutor. When asked for money back since obviously he could not fulfill his duties, he became hostile and aggressive with texting, claiming that we were depleting him and affecting his means to support his family.

He quickly turned himself into the victim, stating that he needed to support his family, how could his clients do this to him, etc. etc. I received my money back because my credit card company insured me, but I believe he walked away with several hundreds through a payment agency (he will try to ask that you send him cash instead). He is a scam artist and I do not believe he is in fact Dr. Tae Hoon Ha. He was previously on Thumbtack and I noticed that several people reported similar outcomes, which is probably why he left. I'm saddened that no one has been able to stop him and he continues to scam people for their money. He needs to be stopped.

The other person who reported her story sounded just like mine. I am sorry to hear about it. No one should have to go through this.

We used Thumbtack Pro for their leads and started noticing constant charges from them that didn't seem accurate and started feeling like they were false charging us. We decided to test this theory stopped opening their leads for two weeks and started monitoring our bank account even closer to see if Thumbtack would still hit our account. Well they did.... In the a two week time, they our bank account numerous times for the amount just over $56. Since these findings, we've tried to contact them a few times with no one answering their phones. We've now blocked Thumbtack from our hitting our bank account anymore.

We also noticed many times in the past that you could never reach anyone from their supposed leads.

Total bad news........

We recently installed a new deck. I submitted a request for a quote through Thumbtack for deck staining and power washing. Before committing, I requested proof of business insurance. He stated he had insurance and would send a copy of the policy to me.

I noticed the insurance policy wasn't restricted down for editing. This prompted me to e-mail the agent, Jason Ayers, the insurance docs to verify proof of insurance. In the meantime, I began researching him by typing in his address listed on the policy and his name. Other businesses came up but nothing came up under the business name he was going by with Thumbtack. In addition, the quote he sent me had another business name listed as well.

I questioned him about the previous businesses and he claimed he had recently parted ways with his business partner and had started a new business on his own. When I questioned him about how long he had been in business for himself, because he looked young, he tried to put my mind at ease by scanning a copy of his driver's license through Thumbtack. Thumbtack only showed him in their system since July 2020. Big mistake on his part. I never asked for it. I told him the insurance doc was alterable, possibly the agent had forgotten to lock it down, and I was needing to verify it prior to hiring him. He stated he would have his agent call me the next morning.

In the meantime, I found this Yelp review for one of the prior businesses. The review stated the owners' employees had stolen over $10k in possessions from the home during a bathroom remodel: yelp.com/biz/mck-contrac… (MCK Contractors). I also verified the authenticity of the previous Yelp complaint with Lee's Summit police department. I spoke to Sgt. Chris Depue. I sent over the driver's license. They stated they had investigated and the case is now closed.

I made a follow-up call to the agent because I had not heard back from him. He stated the insurance docs were forged, the owner had not had insurance with them since 2018 and had canceled insurance because the owner stated he was out of business. I told him that I wouldn't hire him because of the insurance docs being forged. He claimed his business partner had given him a copy of the policy, he had paid his business partner money for the policy, and his business partner must have taken off with the money. I suppose this could be a true story, the stories don't really line up... but there is more.

I did a search on the owner through this website with the county: jococourts.org. A name similar to his popped up. I then followed a name change that was done under civil and typed it in. Criminal charges popped up. I was able to match it to his date of birth on his driver's license.

My neighbor thought I should file a police report because of the forgery, but apparently the agent needs to do that for himself since it was his name that was forged. The police told me this when they arrived at my residence this evening. They recommended giving what I had to Olathe Chamber of Commerce and the BBB. Thumbtack is investigating, but they obviously didn't perform a criminal background check as advertised on the contractor's page.

I filed a BBB report against Thumbtack and an Attorney General's report with the state of California immediately. I filed another with the AG of KS and also an FTC report. The business listed through Thumbtack is under Patriot Powerwashing Pros. The invoice is listed under Patriot Deck and Fence in Lee's Summit. MCK Contractors is also on Thumbtack. The owner's name in Ben McKeag.

The responses I have received so far from Thumbtack have been terrible. Their first reply to the BBB was the issue was between the contractor and me. The problem is they clearly advertised on the contractor's page that he passed their background check. They also have a page that states their background check includes criminal. They obviously didn't check it adequately, because they should have been able to glean the same information I had at my fingertips within minutes.

When I responded back that their excuse was unacceptable, citing again the advertisement on the contractor's page, as well as their guarantee of up to $1000 if a customer is unhappy with the transaction, they told me to talk to the person who is handling my complaint with Thumbtack, a person whose name has never been provided and who has never once contacted me.

Most importantly, despite filing the complaint with Thumbtack two weeks ago, filing the BBB report, and filing the AG's report with the state of CA, and supplying them with all the pertinent information over the phone (and, through their messaging system with the contractor), they have yet to deactivate the contractor's account. A week later, it was still showing he was actively logging in (a customer can tell when a contractor was last logged in by minutes or hours). The last time I checked, it no longer shows the last time he was on the account, but it still allows me to message him. This means they have not closed his account.

I have also talked to other residents in the area through Nextdoor that have suffered financial loss because of Thumbtack's negligence, but the incidents are with other contractors. Some of them have stated there have been criminal background check problems as well.

Scamming vendors by offering leads for services offered. They charge if client responds. Over past 2 weeks automatic charges totalled over $120 for no response whatsoever by people requesting information about my services. And then no response when vendor reached out to potential client.

Charges per lead are approximately $20 and they charge even if client directly asks a question like availability or price which is already listed on vendor profile.Vendors are ranked by how much they spend, but they lead you to believe in a program where you can become a Top Vendor by meeting certain standards.

This operation is a scheme designed to defraud and misrepresent. I joined Thumbtack a few years ago as a REALTOR® with Waterway Realty, Realtors® and WAS a verified merchant. I was billed an outrageous amount of money and got NO leads whatsoever.

I later added Florida Notary Public to my list of services offered and WAS also verified and DID get a few leads that came from THUMBTACKS efforts.

Now, 5 months ago, I added Criminal Law, DUI and Internet Crimes to my list of services offered. I am working as a Legal Assistant to the Law Offices of Roger Elking; located in Aventura, Hollywood, Fort Lauderdale and Miami, Florida

One MUST be "verified to make or give "quotes" to a prospective client. I have been trying tirelessly to "GET VERIFIED" and the "Special Team" has been "looking into" getting it done for 4.5 months. It seems to me that #Thumbtack is going the way of G+ and many other flim-flam operations that scam people's time, money and efforts.

They have NO PROBLEM with their billing machine... They gladly BILL people and DO NOT deliver!

I started 8 years ago sending in quotes to lead on Thumbtack that were inquiring about services I provide. They used to send hundreds a day, and they were always high quality leads. I was able to run a tutoring company with all my leads coming from Thumbtack.

They told me when I noticed stuff was different that they changed the business to be an entirely new business model and way ran. Since then I get charged for receiving a message from someone, charged if the someone askes about my schedule and they can leave reviews on your service if you never were hired and never gave the service.

They say the policy states that we should only have to pay when a lead hires us. Well that is not what they enforce. I have asked for refunds many times from them charging me just to get an email, and charging me to receive a request of my available times, and many other things that are not one time charge for the lead that hires you.

Emailing costs money on the site. I have lost hundreds of dollars and made many complaints with management telling them I have been with them for nearly 10 years and asking, if this is what I deserve after so many years as a customer? She said we treat all customers the sme. Well, says what those who are new or not loyal are going to face, STAY AWAY UNTIL YOU WANT TO BE RIPPED OFF!

I was getting cold calls from Thumbtack. I finally answered and the sales rep named Brittany was trying to sell me on something and I told her I don't pay for job leads and have plenty of work. She persisted and told me that they're willing to give me a 100 dollars in credit to use as leads and that she'd email me a disclosure and as soon as I sign it she'd call back and shedule an appointment for me with a specialist. I signed it and emailed it back. I didn't get a call back so within a couple hours of signing I read it and the statement said I am being charged 300.

I then thought it was a scam and called Thumback and I spoke to a saled rep and he apologized for the misunderstanding and told me he'd deactivate my account and I wouldn't be charged. Then on Christmas I read my credit card statement and I have a 300 dollar charge. The following day I call Thumbtack and I tell them what happened. They then have someone named Ryan call me and he tells me might might be able to get me my money back and how its a great program etc still try to sell me it. I tell him I am not interested. He then promises to call me back the next day and doesn't so I call him and no return call and then the following day no call from him so I call again and no return call.

Now I have to go to the extent about spreading the word about the sales dept tactics and what they're about on site as well as reporting them to BBB and opening up a credit card dispute. Really frustrating between the cold calls, false prentese and lies. Red flags and everyone I have spoken to at customer service says sorry that I;m going through this, but they can't do anything since its a completely seperate departement. And the kicker is when I did speak to Ryan he laughed and told me Brittany is really pursasive and was pushing him to process the credit card as soon as they recieved my signature via email. Completely unprofessional. Most frustrating issue Iv'e ever dealt with on an online platform and I'm on multiple with thousands of reviews which are all 5 star.

I hired a custom cabinet maker through Thumbtack.com and according to Thumbtack.com, they had verified a background check. After, 3 months of waiting for my cabinets to be built and installed, the cabinet maker never shows up for installing the cabinets. He had given me design specs and even created a sample of the cabinet and door style I had chosen. Everything seemed legit and thinking that this person was recommended thru Thumbtack and that on Thumbtack's website, it said his background had been verified. I Googled George Meszaros, Clearlake CA and found he has an extensive criminal record. Now, Thumbtack is telling me they are not responsible. I have paid the cabinetmaker $17,500 for custom cabinets in my kitchen, pantry, laundry, and rental unit downstairs. I have no kitchen and all my plans for having my old parents to come stay with me from Florida for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays are shattered.

Also, I was expecting to rent out the unit downstairs for in order to help me pay for my mortgage and now that has also been shattered. This has affected me emotionally and financially in a very big way and Thumbtack thinks it has no responsibility in this.

Wow, just wow. I received the top screenshot from Thumbtack. You can clearly see in the top blue line

"Congrats, no need to quote!

Jenna O. has already selected you from a list of pros. Reply to seal the deal."

You can clearly see a $2600 price point.

The second screen shot shows in the line messages

"We are fun! Pick us!"

When I reached out to this client it told me I was going to be charged almost $45. Fortunately, I had hit my weekly budget, but I did not know at the time.

So, I reached out to the client. I wrote up a nice intro full of congratulations regarding her engagement and thanking her for her interest. I stated that I would need a little more info before I could draw up a contract.

Her response was,

"I have never heard of a DJ that costs more than $650.

Thanks but that is just way out of our budget"

I was frustrated and I wrote back.

"Thanks, I just paid $45 for the privilege for this exchange. Next time you ask for an interaction know that the DJ is being charged. "

She then wrote back I didn't ask you to contact me. You reached out to me. We went back and forth a little more, but we remained polite. She then posted a 1 star review to my page and cut and pasted snippets of our conversation creating a narrative that was not the truth.

I contacted Thumbtack and asked for the only 1 star review I have ever received in 2.5 years to be removed. I showed them the evidence of our conversation and demonstrated with facts that what this client wrote was untruthful. Thumbtack refused to remove the review because it was about how the client "feels" regardless of the truth.

The other issue is that the client didn't understand she reached out to me. The messages I received from Thumbtack would indicate that I have a person who has been looking at my page. They are aware of the price I see on the screenshot above. If I reply at this time it's a turn key deal. The truth is anything but that.

In the end, after spending nearly 5 hours dealing with customer service, I was forced delete my account.

Jose Luna along with his brother Satatiel and Gerson put in a fence that was not wide enough for a car to fit.

They said they would fix it but they didn't come back.

I paid a premium for a nice gate that would be powder coated; he didn't that either.

They were formerly on YELP as 3 Amigos welders but they got so many bad reviews they changed their name to Luna Ornamental. Don't trust these guys.

Another problem was that I paid him half the money to buy materials, and then he just ignored me until I threatened to give him a bad review. Then he rushed the job and did it wrong.

Run Run Run

Thumbtack Survival Guide:

• Make sure to read the FAQs and the small hyperlinks. Prices are hidden in these areas.

• Don't engage a lead until you 100% understand the costs. We paid $60 for a single chat communication.

• Only buy leads with phone numbers and stay away from all leads where the phone numbers don't match up with the business zip.

• Check the leads to be sure the area code matches the business location (use online directories).

...And if they still don't pan out - report them to Thumbtack and pray they will refund... or just try something else. :)

Oh and this review below has to be some type of Online Reputation Management system. It's the only listing on the planet that gives this company a good rating.

I set my budget and even though it was set they purposely went over and without my permission withdrew funds from my bank exceeding my budget.

  • Jun 28, 2018

THUMBTACK is a complete RIPOFF.

They take your money, change the rules of how they operate and don't allow you to use the service after you paid for credits unless you give them (and this is years later) your social security number and allow them to do a background check.

WHAT??????? ARE YOU KIDDING ME???? YOU WANT ME TO PLUG MY SSN IN TO A FORM THAT GETS SENT OVER THE INTERNET

ARE THESE PEOPLE COMPLETELY STUPID OR WHAT??????????????????

On 5/19/ First Response insatlled 1 gutter and re-positioned the other side. Night of 5/19, gutters leaked everywhere. The endcaps leaked, the back of the gutter and over the sides. Water goes into my basement and flows onto my neighbors property. Water does not flow into the downspots at all. Gutters are not attached to fascia board. Scress sticking out under the gutter. Called him on 5/20. He restricted his phone and I couldn't get trhough. Tried to reach him through the Thumbtack site. No response. Finally contacted on his personal cell phone. Took him days to come out. Said he would install new fascia board. Never showed up. Used excuses lke truck was hit, brother's daughter in the hospital.Contacted Thumbtack for support. Paul agreed to refund my money bu 6/08/2018. As of 6/20 no money. Says he mailed to wrong address and must cancel check. Address he claims to have used does not exist therefore envelope would ha ve been retunred by the Post Office. I have tarps around my house to route water away. neighbors are questioning why water is coming into their yards. Basement has water if i don't use tarps. Big mess. New installer wants even more money so I need my money back from Paul.

I have used thumbtack for a few yrs to find handyman jobs to do for pay. Thumbtack went from charging for each bid to only charging when I receive a response from a bid I submitted. During the change of this format, not all of the services were set to the new system. I made several bids to do research on area charges. They charged me for most of the bids I made even though they say they had changed the format. They refused a refund ( when I was able to reach someone). They offer a phone number nobody answers, they offer text help that nobody responds back too.

I was just charged 40$ for one response from one job. I cant even reach the company to complain. Due to all the negative reviews, why are they still functioning as a service????

I want to be part of any lawsuit and Im willing to meet with any atty to offer my complaints of thumbtacks lack of service.

They rip people off and know that they do. They make it impossible to reach them to complain. I am fed up with their lack of empathy to their clients.

I spent months paying for leads to the tune of over 4 thousand dollars only to be thrown off of thumbtack with no reason givin after i had recommended the service to my brothers when i contacted thumbtack to ask why. They wouldn't tell me they would only say you have a strong connection to another account that's all they would tell.

Now the money i paid was for all the leads info that they kept when they threw me off wich was about 200 leads. I own that info i paid for it and they kept it. After i done my own investigation i found out my brother had an argument the week i was thrown off with someone at thumbtack And because we were related they threw me and my other brother off which is fine but were totally seperate companies.

What really pisses me off is if i pay for a product " the leads and thier contact info " i own that info but they kept it all and it caused me a lot of problems because a lot of those leads had no way to get back in touch with me because we comunicated through thumbtack.

Thumbtack is a company where you can supposedly get customer leads to book customers for your business. Unfortunately, 75% of the time they provide very little information about the job requiring you to need more information from your prospective customer to see if you can even help them at all. What your customer needs may simply not be in your skill set and with the purposefully vague inquiries from Thumbtack, you have no choice but to either skip the request, pay to ask the customer for more information or pay to send a blind quote hoping you can help them.

If a customer just wants to contact you and ask if you are available tomorrow for service and you are not or you actually decline the service request all together.. Guess what, Thumbtack has no problem charging you for that as well. If you just go on and send people quotes or messages asking for more info about the job all day long, you will actually pay Thumbtack more money then you will ever make on jobs.

That actually happened to me. I ended up paying Thumbtack more on contacts that simply had nothing to do with my skill set that were matched to me, than the single job I booked through them.

After fighting and fighting with them telling them how unfair it is for them to charge us for services we did not book or simply do not offer, they refuse to refund and say the charges are justified and do not violate the terms. When someone is even able to get a charge reversed, it goes back as an account credit. So they take the money from your credit card for a service you did not and cannot perform and then give you a store credit in return. I can’t see any other words for this than theft and scam.

This company has found a way to legally scam people out of their money through terms and conditions. Also, I have my boundaries set to less than an hour travel and I kept getting matches for well outside my travel area. Even out of state matches. So I was getting charged for declining people outside of my travel area. If you search BBB you will see how people have spent $100’s and even $1000’s with this company and haven’t even booked a single job but kept spiraling down the rabbit hole because they were stuck with credits that they couldn’t use and mysterious leads that pop up and all of a sudden stop responding to you or change their mind in the end. I don’t know how this company is allowed to operate.

  • Mar 12, 2018

They take your money for quotes that they send when you sign up they started some crap called instant match where they send quote on your behalf so then you get charged for stuff that you didn't even send. They don't explain that anywhere when you sign up i didn't even know until i read all the way through the help section what was going on that should be something they tell you when you're signing up that they're going to be taking your money without you knowing. It's overpriced some of these quotes for little teeny jobs they take $25 i mean really on a 2-3 hundred dollar job.

I've been using thumbtack for years. Now, I'm starting to suspect fraudulant leads. For every legitimate lead you recieve (although you may not win); there's 10 bogus leads. Lately, they (fake lead) have been writting back stating "Going a Different route". I have had over 20 leads in the past 10 days all with the generic "Going a different route" response that seems highly suspicious to me.

Also, if you look at the leads name...they more than likely always end with the letter "S" (for example, Maria S. David S etc..) or double constanants (Ana A., Coleen C. etc.) So if they are going a diiferent route. They should automatically be refunded. Not to mention the "hundreds" of other leads that we haven't heard back from. We've even lowered our rates 50% to see if theses leads are real and NO LUCK. How do we proceed with filing a class action lawsuit?

  • Jan 20, 2018

I joined Thumbtack April 2017 to obtain Photography leads for business, The company has kept making changes to our detriment without any notice to us purchasing leads. It has gotten to the point of, in my opinion, a total scam because they have put such restrictions on bidding it is a total waste of time, there is virtually little or now response from any potential client, with no reporting on even if lead quote was extended to the client. However the credit card is charged each and every time. without fail. but no explanation from Thumbtack as to why these leads are getting absolutely no response! I am interested in joining in any CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT PENDING. there should be sanctions against companies like this who just charge and charge and virtually blow the so called PROS off when complaints are brought.

I too have been scammed with over $900 in bogus leads. I decided to fight back and filed a fraud report with the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) https://www.ftc.gov/faq/consumer-protection/submit-consumer-complaint-ftc

I have been on Thumbtack for over year and a half now and I’ve spent well over $12,000 and have not gotten anywhere near the ROI on my money! they refused to credit back on quotes that are clearly a misrepresentation of the actual bid that the people put in what they’re able to actually spend. Now they have taken away the packages that actually gave us extra beds for buying a large amount at once. They don’t do anything to protect the professionals and we are the only ones that keep them check the flow if it wasn’t for our money that we pay for credits thumbtack would not exist. I have reached out to their customer service many times in the beginning they were very helpful and would give me an extra 10 or 20 credits for leads in quotes that were not legitimate however I found out from one of the customer service reps that I now they have taken away the packages that actually gave us extra beds for buying a large amount at once. They don’t do anything to protect the professionals and we are the only ones that keep them check the flow if it wasn’t for our money that we pay for credits thumbtack would not exist. I have reached out to their customer service many times in the beginning they were very helpful and would give me an extra 10 or 20 credits for leads in quotes that were not legitimate however now they completely refused to do anything and tell me that all of the quotes are within their guidelines and meet their guidelines. Well to me when somebody says their budget is 20 $25 and you communicate with them and you find out their actual budget is $4 that’s a misrepresentation and a blatantly misleading! I would be happy for anybody to reach out to me via email in regards to a club that currently underway as I am still a member of Thumbtack I can get whatever information is needed I can pull up correspondence from them where they are refusing to take accountability for the information that they are charging us for [email protected] I live in and based out of Colorado but if it is happening to me here it is got to be happening to people all over the states . I hired this scumbag Jim Whithouse from Thumbtack.com to do a simple job which was to fix a portable genarator back in May 2017. He said he could do the job so we met and i gave him the equipment so he could take it to his shop to fix it. It is now August,2017 and i still havent gotten my equipment back. I have tried to contact this guy to get him paid so i could get my equipment back and in return i get alot of sarcastic responces and run arounds. At the moment i am trying to see what thumbtack is going to do but at this point i dont even want the equipment back because hes probably using it for his purpose or he has sold it. They can just cut me a check for the generator he didnt return and the generator i had to buy to replace the one he wont return. He cost me money with these action he took for whatever reason. I remember when we were suppose to meet him back in may 2017 so i could pay him for his work and i could go about my way and he stop answering my calls. I called and called and called then i called from a different number then he answered. I knew then i was about to have problems. So i am looking to sue Jim Whitehouse and Thumbtack if we cant resolve this problem in the next few days.

I have hired 4 of Thumbtack's so called "Pros". Not a single one have completed their work. One of their "Pros" was a complete scammer who stole $5000 from us forcing us to litigate. Thumbtack could not even provide and address for us to serve, they have absolutely no vetting of their "Pros". Do not use this service it is a complete scam.

Thumbtack is a complete fraud for the most part. After responding and paying to respond to hundreds of leads to only very rarely get a response from a real person. Thumbtack charges the small business to respond to these leads therefore its in Thumbtacks best interest to send you so many leads only in temtation for the business to spend more money attemting to make contact to these leads. After responding to literally over 300 leads it is mathmatically impossible that a real person wouldnt respond one way or another. It is very tempting to respond when they send you so many leads thinking that those people are actually looking to hire your services.

Someone needs to help us small business out when we can not afford to hire lawyers to investigate. Our franchise as a group has responded to over 1000 leads and every single franchise has the same issues.

Thumbtack is a fraudulent company known to rip off its customers. This company claims to find "customers" in your area for small businesses. It does this by sending you "leads" of interested customers looking for your particular service or business and you pay Thumbtack to be able to send them a message. I've put quite a bit of money into it and have not received a single real customer not have I even talked with a single real customer. I believe the company makes fraudulent customers so you have to pay them to get these leads. I know many people are experiencing the same thing I have. You never get their contact info nor do you ever speak with them and once I pay thumbtack to get these leads they never respond back and are lost. This is absolutely fraud and I want to bring a class action lawsuit against them

If you are considering using Thumbtack to get leads for your business...STOP! Read this first. Their system works like this: you put in a free ad for your services. then you get contacted by supposed people who need your services. For example, if you offer resume writing, you put in your ad, and you will get responses from people who want their resume written.

In order to respond back to those people, you first need to buy "credits" from Thumbtack. The cost is about $29.00 for 20 credits. Each lead you get costs between 2 and 10 credits. So you buy these credits and then spend them to contact those potential customers with your bid: $50 for a 1 page resume, something like that. And then the customer, if they want to use your service at that price, contacts you and you begin working together.

Looks good on paper, right?

But the reality is this: Thumbtack makes their money on you buying the leads, so they VERY OBVIOUSLY create fake leads that match your ad perfectly, so you of course buy the credits and contact the people expecting to do business with them. Bzzzzt! The people are fake! No business!

I received over 100 leads for my ad. Reading through them, I noticed that many were very similar... it was almost as if some guy from Thumbtack was whipping off as many fake responses to my ad as possible, but then he got lazy....and the responses started looking very much alike. I was skeptical, so instead of buying enough leads to contact all 100 people, I paid the $29 and bought 20 leads. I chose leads that only cost 2 credits, which means I was able to contact 10 people. And I gave them all the lowest possible bid for my service, which, based on the local going rate, was about 1/4 of everybody else's standard price.

Yes, you guessed it: 0 people out of the 10 got back with me to actually do business. Their initial responses all seemed so urgent, so ready to write the check as soon as they heard back from me. But then, 0 out of 10? The odds are totally against that kind of a strike out.

Thumbtack creates fake leads and charges you for them. Period. End of story. You see the leads and think you're going to do business with these people, and so you pay for the credits. And once you do, Thumbtack is in the money... they're on to the next victim, and you're out the money you've paid for your leads....and you don't even get 1 person from the Thumbtack system to write you a check so you can at least break even.

Use Craigslist....go to Upwork and hire a marketer who can place you high up on Google... do facebook ads, whatever. But steer clear of Thumbtack. They are an absolute scam!!!!!

"Pro" Horseriding instructor Alicia scammed me out of $100.00 for lessons that she never showed up for. Thumbtack.com referred her, and did not respond to my complaint.

The only way to bid on jobs is to purchase credits. The minimum you can purchase is $29.99. There is no guarantee that you will get work. After bidding on one job using the iphone app, I became unable to bid on subsequent job requests.

I responded to job requests within seconds of getting an alert on my phone and each and every time the bidding was closed. It is impossible that 5 people managed to bid before me within literally one second of receiving the alert.

I am unable to bid on job and unable to receive a refund from this scam of a company.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY

Thumbtack is ripping people off. They are creating fake leads to get your money for nothing. I figured this all along but was never sure until they came up with a new program that they claim is free where you only pay for leads that contact you. then they sent me some fake message and charged my credit card. There needs to be a class action lawsuit against them.

Thumbtack Lies about their 1 million Customer Guarantee. They allow Fake Contractors on their site and make money off them. They don't care what the contractor does in your home, e.g. break your personal items, steal from your home or even quit the job! The 1 million dollars Guarantee is suppose to be for your personal property BUT Thumbtack won't cover you. They are a waste of time, I will NEVER use them again. Their contractor caused me $14,000 and they won't do anything about it. Beware of this Scammer Thumbtack , use Angie list or any other service provider.

I am a certified pet groomer who provides in home grooming services as well as petsitting, and dog walking services. I signed up to be a member of this company site hoping to get possible leads for new clients. They send you emails of each possible new job lead to your email. Then I have the option to click on the ones I would like to give a quote. To respond to a lead and give a quote, they charge you quote credits per for each one you choose. I've noticed they send the same job lead multiple times within a 2 or 3 day period. I recently noticed that I had bid on the same job multiple times because they sent the same jobnlead a few times, and I did not realize that they did that so I was charged a few times for the same exact job lead. Just this morning I noticed 4 new lead emails came in my email box. They all were sent and received at 2:40 am , by a client by the name of Susan , with 4 different address locations . All 4 leads were requesting quotes for the exact same job services, for the same exact dates , and same amount as pets etc. I have sent over 100 quotes and have yet to receive any responses back from anyone.

I used a contractor to fix my deck (FRITZ)... Not only did he not fix my deck,, at the beginning of the project he stopped and complained about mold. Ok I thought, I'll call a few places to make sure it's safe to take down. ALL 3 mold companies said because it was outside so the contractor is ok to take it down and dispose of it. Well this guy made it impossible to even get him on the phone to come finish. I paid him $1000 in advance (BIG MISTAKE)! He wouldn't return my calls and then when he finally did return my call he said for an extra $1000 he would dispose of it? really more money,, what a scam! Even after being told by all 3 companies that is was ok to remove.

I said no way, I'm not paying you more. I want my money back!

He said no I started the work already and I used a lot of gas driving here? WHAT Gas> who pays a contractor for his gas?

Anyway,,, long story short,, we settled on $300 for his work of taking down 20 boards, excessive in my mind but ok I wanted to be fair, unlike he was! So I thought ok I can move on,,, well NO this guy called building and safety on me and tried to say I was not pulling permits or using a contractor to do the work.. ALL LIES!!

BEWARE OF FRITZ! He's a crook and his partner Jim is just as bad!

The same exact thing happened to me on 9/14/2016. I hired a "professional" "electrician" from thumbtack who has been scamming people from 2012. I too trusted that thumbtack did background checks, verified license and insurance of these contractors but obviously not. I called thumbtacks to report this scam artist that they promote and they told me its my fault that I trusted the guy and I should have verified his information. Wow! They took no liability or accountability for promoting scam artists. I'm thinking they get a cut. I plan to sue them. Just piling up evidence to move forward. Spread the word that thumbtack are scammers like the contractors they are promoting. They would put a sex offender in position to be a babysitter and how many children would be at risk of being victims. Serial killers can find victims on this site.

I run a pet care business and I have noticed some very unusual thing with Thumbtack leads, and I think the leads must be fake. For example, in my 27 years experience running my petcare business, it has been my observation that cat owners never ask for two visits a day. Cats are usually fine with one visit per day. But every single Thumbtack lead I've EVER gotten for cat sitting had requested two visits per day. That just doesn't match up with my 27 years of experience in the pet sitting business. In the real world, cat owners don't ever ask for two visits per day. But in Thumbtack's world of fake leads, cats owners always request two visits per day. When I get a REAL request through my website,

I ALWAYS get hired. But, after using Thumbtack for the past year, out of the 70 leads I responded to, I have only been contacted by ONE of those leads, and I was hired by that contact. Here's the REALLY fishy part: When I first signed on with Thumbtack, I purchased a large block of credits, and since that initial purchase, I have been receiving between 3-10 Thumbtack leads each week. BUT, after I used up all my credits about 10 days ago, I re-purchased a small number of credits in order to give Thumbtack another try. Now here's the fishy part: In the 10 days since I bought my new credits, I have recieved NO new leads. I went from up to TEN leads a week, to ZERO leads. I believe Thumbtack has been sending fake leads all along, waiting for me to use up all of last years lower priced credits. Once I ran out of my credits, they sold me a new batch of much higher priced credits. Once they got my money, the leads dried up from 10 per week to ZERO. Take my advice and DON'T fall for this scam. 99% of their leads are fake, guaranteed!

I used Thumbtack as a resource when i was searching for a landscape contractor. The impression Thumbtack gives to the public is that they vet and background check the companies they represent. This, however, is not the case. I hired a landscape contractor which was referred to me by Thumbtack only to find he is a known scammer. He is not licensed to do business in North Carolina and has scammed several others in the same way in which he scammed me. Had it not been for the referral from Thumbtack, i would have never contacted this company. As it stands, I paid this person $4100 and have nothing to show for it.

I used Thumbtack.com to find a hardwood floor refinisher. I located a 11 times 5 star reviewed company called DLS flooring on Thumbtack’s website. Thumbtack says they’ve been background checked and vetted, licensed and insured. I found DLS Flooring at 110 East 177th street apt -1-F Bronx, NY 10453 (347) 928-5727. I paid $1000 out of $1500 to Albert Ramos to refinish hardwood floors. DLS Flooring came and were inexperienced. The floor finishing has blotches, drips, destroyed my hardwood floors and disappeared. He is unprofessional and the damage he caused will cost $6870 to repair, because he buffed away the wood stain of the wood. I contacted Thumbtack on more than three occasions and the only thing they would do is to directed me to their resolution center. In text exchanges, Albert Ramos of DLS says he’s not insured. I could not locate a license in NYC Dept. of Consumer Affairs. The company won’t refund the money paid, or pay for damages. You can see pictures at Thumbtackreview.weebly.com

When I signed up for Thumbtack leads were trickling in. When I decided to stop responding to the leads-I had referrals in an abundance! They wanted me to keep paying so they made up leads so I would not stop using them all together. Many of the leads had the same name or needed the same service (one that is peculiar and I have never had that request)_ but with Thumbtack I recieved it twice.

They just started giving me more leads right when I was out of money in my thumbtack account.

I just have a wierd feeling about this and I wish someone would look in to it in depth because they are doing something janky.

I have been using thumbtack for a long time now . I have spent a lot of money purchasing credits and I have come to believe this business is a fraud. I just received 5 back to back dj request all the same!! FAKE!!! This Business is a fraud!!

I pay per lead $3-15. It was legitimate at one time and customers would call or ask questions after paying for and submitted bids. Since I signed up with thumbtack I noticed when I would advertise on other marketing sites like Craigslist that day would have a influx of my competition inquiries not legitimate customers. How I determine the fact is overly detailed inquiries by lead with no phone number or Facebook verified. Legitimate leads are with phone number or Facebook verified. Lost nore money this past six months with empty promises.

I'm a personal trainer in Phoenix Az that has been looking for more in home clients. I joined a site called Thumbtack. The site has you pay a certain amount of money what they call credits to give you leads to clients. We get a lead through text and respond with a quote about us and what we offer and charge for personal training. The clients are then suppose to gather 5 quotes and pick which trainer they would like. I have been on thumbtack a few months now and have not had one call or text from a potential client. And I reseve almost 10-16 texts a day from thumbtack. I'm having a hard time believing that all these people are looking for trainers daily now and it seems very shady I have not gotten one response. They also have where if you don't want a client that they text you about you can hit pass and it goes to other trainers. I have hit pass a few times because of where they were located and I've noticed the more I pass up the more text messages I get that day from others wanting a trainer. I think that seems suspicious. I believe it's because thumbtack is not getting paid for these passes so they are shooting more to me. The whole thing is just not right I believe Thumbtack needs to be stopped!!
