I was shopping for a used car for my teenage son and I found a car at Royal Palm Beach Toyota. On their website they advertised a 2006 Toyota Corolla for $3,688 ( Memorial Day Special Price). I called them to see if this vehicle was still available and I got the typical sales pitch of "what is your price range? what are you looking for?" I explained to Andrew that I was intersted in THAT CAR ONLY. I told him that I wanted the bottom line price- no funny business- bottom line price and that I was ready to buy today. I told him that I would buy it over the phone and have my son go to pick it up, TODAY. I asked Andrew to send me the best price by email so I could buy the car TODAY.

I received an email from the sales rep about 15 mins after speaking with him and here is the breakdown:

Price of car $3,688, DEALER FEE $999.99, State and Local Taxes $268.

08, License and Fee $479.95, for a TOTAL OF $5353.98!!! YES THAT IS CORRECT $1000 DEALER FEE ON A $3600 USED CAR WITH NO WARRANTY BEING SOLD AS IS!!!!!

I called Andrew back and I discussed the breakdown with him and I questioned him about the dealer fee and how could they charge an outrageous fee on a car that they are selling AS IS with no WARRANTY, not even a 30 DAY warranty. He told me that this was a trade-in car and that if it didn't sell in a few days it was going to go to AUCTION. So I said " you would rather sell the car at auction, then sell it to me today? and when goes to auction you don't get to charge a DEALER FEE!!!" I tried to make my case and to explain the logic of what he mentioned regarding the dealer fee, he said that he would call me back. A few hours later he called me back and said this was the price $5353.98. No discount, no deals, no breaks at all.

Today I called the dealership to speak to the manager and the head person in charge in order to discuss the "Dealer Fee" on a used car. I was told initially that "THERE WAS NO MANAGER, AND NO PERSON IN CHARGE". I said to the operator " you mean to tell me that there is no head boss or dealership manager?" she replied with "yes, there is no manager". Now this is no rag-tag dealership, it is a HUGE dealership, but apparently there is nobody who runs and maganes the staff, the building, the service center, or a decision maker whatsoever. I asked to be transferd to the person who would be the closest to the "manager". I waited on hold for about 5 minutes and I was bounced around from one person the next until I was transfered to Gene, who said he was the Sales Manager.

I explained to Gene my frustration regarding the car that I was trying to buy for my son, I told him I was ready to buy that car YESTERDAY. Gene proceeded with the traditional car sales tactics " What is your price range?" I had to explain that I was only interested in the TOYOTA COROLLA that was advertised on your website and THAT IS STILL ON YOUR CAR LOT AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE. I explained to him that I did not want to pay $1000 in dealer fees on a $3600 vehicle and that it is outrageous for them to charge almost 30% in additional fees, especially on a USED CAR WITH NO WARRANTY. I explained to him that these were DECEPTIVE MARKETING practices and that you can not advertise a USED CAR for $3600 online and then charge almost an extra $2000 out the door. I told him that this was a GIANT SCAM.

I gave the "sales manager" Gene every opporunity to work with me and to reduce the price of the dealer fee or to reduce the price of the USED CAR WITH NO WARRANTY THAT THEY WERE GOING TO SEND TO AUCTION, but Gene made no attempt to assist me. He did not want to discount the vehicle or reduce the price of the dealer fee for the USED CAR WITH NO WARRANTY BEING SOLD AS-IS. He wouldn't even take down my phone number and my name so he could contact me at a later time.

I am a very upset consumer and I am warning everyone about ROYAL PALM BEACH TOYOTA OF THEIR DECEPTIVE MARKETING AND SALES PRACTICES. I was a buyer ready to buy the car off the lot TODAY and they refused to help me. Buyers beware.
