Rover.com Reviews

  • Jul 25, 2022

I went on rover.com to find a pet sitter for my pets. I chose Matthew Short as he came with a "Verified Enhanced Background Check" as well as 15 positive reviews. He outreached me and asked for my phone number. He called me and told me that because I had more than one pet, Rover charged per pet, but that he'd only charge me for one pet.

He required that I pay him because he didn't want to be stiffed, but would be at my house the following Monday at noon to get instructions. I paid him and when he didn't show up at noon, I called him. He answered and told me that his sister had a heart attack and he was on his way to Tampa and would contact me that evening or the following day.

The following day came and went. By the second day, I sent him an e-mail and left him a message asking for my $416 back as he did not keep his word. (He had responded to e-mail the day that I paid him, but didn't respond to my e-mail or voice mail requesting my money be returned). I had paid him through Velle to the phone number he gave me - 863-368-0859 (which we communicated).

I filed a fraud case with my bank and filed a report with the sheriff's office. In the meantime, I learned that this same individual did the same thing to Lindsey M. and Jerica M. I drove to the address of Matthew, and the house was abandoned.

His neighbor told me that Matthew was evicted from that residence and moved into a garage type apartment on the other side of her; however, he was also evicted from there, but stole the appliances and sold them. I stopped by the fire stated a couple blocks away, and showed the fireman his photos.

I learned that they had been to the last place that Matthew was evicted from as he called and said his boyfriend set his clothes fire as well as other items. However, they suspect that Matthew was the one who set the fire. I stopped by a convenient store across from the fire station, and the attendant informed me that Matthew was in the store that morning buying a coke with food stamps and frequently went there to purchase lottery tickets.

I contacted Rover about all of this and asked how this individual even passed a background check. To my dismay, I learned from the representative at Rover that Matthew's account had been flagged several times in the past for taking customers off the website and that he had two profiles.

In the meantime, Les W. outreached Matthew for pet sitting services through Rover. Once again, Matthew directed Les off the website. He called Les and was sending him text messages. Les agreed to hire Matthew, but told him that he would have someone bring the money to him.

Les became aware of Matthew scamming people, and did not have anyone go to the address that was provided to him by Matthew. Les took a screen shot of all their texts, including Matthew claiming that he had turned down 2 pet sitting jobs to pet sit for Les. Les outreached Rover to let them know that Matthew was still on their website and scamming people.

Clearly, Matthew has Axis II diagnoses as he is a pathelogical liar, a thief, and has a history of being evicted from places. I also learned, from another individual, who is on Rover, that the reviews aren't necessarily from people who used Rover. Hence, many reviews are fake.

I came across a post online about Rover.com employee Eden Nelson of Apple Valley, MN who attacks people online in the name of Rover.com including insults like "ugly b*tch" and "ugly clown". This employee uses Rover.com as her profile tagline of employment and clearly shows Rover.com does not remotely care if customers are getting harassed, or if their reps such as Eden Nelson are cyber-bullying individuals.

All I can say after researching this and seeing the multiple screenshots and posts, is that I will tell everyone I know not to ever use Rover.com due to them allowing Eden Nelson of MN to cyber bully people in their name. This review will be posted online on various pet message boards and I will urge all to boycott this company due to their cyber bullying staff.

Rover.com is the most shady and unprofessional business that I have ever worked this. I had an experience with a bad sitter who after booking a drop-in visit with my pets, never returned my messages and did not meet with me at the agreed time to greet my pets and receive instructions for the stay. I contacted Rover customer service about the issue, and they have done nothing to correct the issue. I am not even able to write a review for the sitter I booked with because "I had canceled the stay" after she did not return my messages. I had to rebook with another (more expensive) sitter the day before my 9 hour trip. Customer service is a joke and could care less about customer complaints against bad sitters. Everyone of the sitters have 5-star reviews because they do not allow you to create a bad review for them. I will never use this service again and neither should anyone else.

As a highly rated dog sitter/walker I did not always find rover customer service to be fair, responsible, practical, far-seeing, ethical, forthcoming/transparent, or good at listening. Their website communications could be misleading. For example, clients’ last names, addresses, and actual phone numbers were not provided to the sitter on the website although different rover-generated phone numbers (that I had wrongly assumed were clients’) were provided. Clients’ identities may not therefore have been bona fide or trackable, which became most troubling for me in one particular case.

There were other issues. Full, continuous history of written dialogue between the customer and sitter was also not always displayed to the sitter on rover’s client profile which made it difficult for the sitter to track conversations. (Individual emails would have to be opened instead to search for parts of conversations). Also, a rate category for a day and night package is not available on rover, which customers complained about. I pushed for rover to add that to their website so that clients wouldn’t be confused. Rover also changed my photos and their placement on my profile without notifying or asking my permission. After this, they changed information on my profile as well without asking me so that it was false information, such as indicating that I was a smoker when I am not. They claimed they did not make these changes.

Sitters will be blocked from using aspects of the website and blocked from receiving customer requests without rover informing them of the reasons. Sitters will have to figure out the cause. For example, I was having trouble using the website and wasn’t getting client requests for some time. When I called rover to inquire about this, rover told me that I needed a longer personal profile description in order for rover to unblock me. This was a required, new policy for all sitters that rover had not notified me about.

As an exception to this rule of not notifying sitters, Rover recently sent new terms of conditions that I had to agree to in order to continue using their services. For a long time I had been thinking about discontinuing with rover and, as I didn’t agree to these terms, I informed them I wished to discontinue with their services. Rover replied that only they could be the ones to deactivate my account. The deactivation process was problematic. For example, Rover did not wait before taking action or explaining things, and they even changed my email subject headings of our conversations.

Most alarming was that during a conversation with my last rover client via texting when I mentioned the process of leaving rover, ALL my phone texts (thousands)—not just rover’s correspondence on my phone but personal, important records—instantly vanished!! It appeared that rover had gained control over my entire phone text records. A shocking discovery.

Rover claims they can delete only rover customer texts on my phone and no other texts. Yet at some point during my time with rover, they gained the capability of instantly texting me sent emails to and from customers (while emailing to my personal email and rover email accounts my same texts to and from customers) without asking for permission to somehow always sync my phone and laptop devices with triplicate messages, which would not have been my preference. These copies to and from my phone and laptop continued until the last message was sent/received between me and a rover client. I still do not know how rover synced my phone to my laptop and their computer system.

Recently, when I subsequently tried to contact a neighbor, who is a client, rover had already messaged her—without my permission—that I’m no longer offering services. I don’t know how rover explained to her that I was no longer working for them because rover provided no copy. But rover also blocked me from that neighbor’s phone and I had to use a different phone to contact her.

WARNING!! If you use ROVER.COM this can happen to you! I booked a dog sitter from Rover.com to stay with my dog when I took a 5 day trip. I met the sitter first. She seemed nice and my dog liked her. I scheduled and paid for this service three months in advance. I gave her a key to my home. I even stocked food for her stay, making every effort to ensure her comfort. I bought my round trip plane ticket and awaited the arrival of the sitter. She NEVER SHOWED UP. She failed to answer any of my calls and failed to respond to any of my texts. My plane took off without me. I called every boarding facility I could to find a last minute arrangement and finally found one, thankfully, and then I had to buy another round trip flight. Extra costs for the second flight and extra boarding fees ran over $650. The amount of stress I went through for hours waiting for the sitter who never showed up then frantically trying to fix this ... I would not wish on anyone. When I contacted Rover.com I was told that they would only refund my payment to them and offer me a $30 credit toward future service. They would not in any way compensate me for ANY part of my financial losses due to their failure to meet the contractual obligation of their online agreement. After this experience I would never book them again. Since it is their policy that they will NOT compensate you for any losses associated with your engaging of their “service” and it is not made really clear up front that this could happen to anyone who uses them; I am going out of my way to relate my experience and maybe save someone else the horror and financial losses associated with trusting and using Rover.com. Feel free to share this post as a public service.

I had arranged for a pet sitter through Rover.com to have my animals and house watched. In the application I stated the facts about Maggie, a golden retriever, stating she owned two cats, Bart and Kiki. The sitter came by two days before to meet the pets. She was informed that my daughter's dog stayed with us during the day. Molly is a 16 pound chiweeni. On the 20th while we were in Orange Beach Alabama she texted me stating she had left and pretended not to have realized she was sitting with all these animals. The night before we departed I texted her to ask if molly could be here until her "brother" could pick her up and offered to pay extra. She said she would be happy to do it. Rover called claiming only Maggie was covered so they couldn't allow the sitter to stay. We quickly arranged to have my twin 17 year old grandsons to leave work and stay with the animals until their older brother to arrive from Tallahassee. That had been arranged earlier for the boys to have an adult in case of emergencies and take them to work etc The sitter had left all her belongings at our home and we told her to get them. It seems to us that the company was trying to hold us over a barrel so they could demand more fees. We did not hide any facts from this company.

We had a confirmed reservation with Madeline Lipton on Rover.com for a day of pet sitting while we attended a remore work event in Aspen. Madeline confirmed the reservation only to cancel without warning with less than two days notice beofre the confirmed reservation. Cancelations with such short notice are against Rover.com policy.

Madeline has shown she is completely unorganzied and unprofesional with her business, and based on our direct experience, we do not recomend trusting her with your pet.

I am a dog sitter. I signed up with Rover.com they keep 20% of your earnings with the explanation that you will have the benefit of insurance protection if there is any injury to your Pet or the pet your caring for. My dog was attacked by a dog who's owner claimed got along well with other dogs. So I called Rover.com and found that they will only cover anything over $250.00. My vet bill was $175.00. Fortunately, the Owner of the dog that attack paid the $175.00, but unfortunately, my dog had complications from the bite less than two months after the attack. He formed an abscess that needed to be surgically repaired. The Vet found a piece of a tooth from the dog that bit, the bill was $500.00. I called Rover.com and they informed me that I was out of luck. They said that their insurance only covers up to 30 days of the incident and to add insult to injury, they said that I was free to find another source of insurance to protect my dog.

I had originally had a decent experience, so I thought, until I got home! My 3 puppies, who were housebroken started pooping uncontrollably. The ended up with round worms from the sitters dogs. I reported it immediately and they wouldn't cover costs or refund. They told me it was preventable care. When I provided proof that my dogs had been on preventative care and asked for proof that they ensured their sitters pets had care, theyou then said they might consider insuring after a $500 deductible! I decided to look up the sitters full name, since they don't disclose it, boy was that a can of worms! I clarified with Rover.com that they did do criminal checks. They said yes, then I hit them with the sitters local rap sheet... drugs, prostitution, murder (yes, murder charges in drug bust), theft, etc... that was just one County! She had lived in 3 in this state, in 3 other states and abroad.

I looked up all this on public records and discovered 4 aliases! I reported all the info to them a few days ago as I noticed she had supposedly just dog sat for another client, somehow from the jail cell she's been sitting in since her arrest 5 days after I picked up my pups... and yes she's still in jail and if you go on their site now, even with all that info, you can still hire "her"... from jail apparently... smh

I had the displeasure with dealing with this atrocious company. They are a scam and will erase any honest reviews said about them on the BBB, trust pilot and on their FB page. I was a sitter and they left me without my wages I had earned, the moment I emailed customer service to ask for my money they erased my account. There is no support whatsoever, and they refuse to pay me or negiotate, their only solution is to deny your claims, ignore you or go on the defense and erase every single negative review said about them. Rover is a fradualent company, misleading, calculating liars and they surely do not care for you as a sitter or a consumer.

They pay off Better Business Bureau to erase your reviews and complaints that is why they have an A- rating instead of a D or lower. After doing careful research it seems any negligence done to the sitter or any grievances experienced by a dog owner will be ignored, they offer no remedies but will give you a dishonest, rehearsed apologie.

Do not give them your time or money as you will only be taken advantaged of. Any donations you send in will be in their name, not yours. If you are a sitter, they will take a high percentage of your earnings. The insurance they offer is also useless and doesn't exist. There is no protection for property damage or physical damage done to you as the sitter or to your pet in the case the of negligence. In addition, the fees for insurance comes from the sitter's paycheck and will not be refunded despite coverage for "one year", Rover will terminate your account immediately if you ask for any type of assistance to avoid any responsibility.

Overall, Rover is a just a money hungry company, that takes and takes from honest people struggling to make a living. If I had to describe their business in a few words, I would say there are unreasonable, manipulative and dishonest in many facets of their business..... dirty inside and out.

My experiences with them left me in tears and I hope no one else has to deal with them and does thorough research before making any type of transaction, whether it is employment or monetary, as a consumer, because all you will see are positive reviews, which may not even be from real customers. Everything about Rover, makes my skin crawl seeing how devious and what lengths they will go through to portray a fake image of honor and compassion, instead of addressing real issues. My opinion and complaint stands and I hope this review will remain on here to educate others because this is the truth and they will take drastic measures to hide it.

I think it about time to have a discussion about Rover which is a dog sitting service that started a couple years ago to make revenue for their own purpose. As many of us already are aware it does not appear as though Rover donates a lot of their own earnings to helping out dogs across the country. In fact Rover takes money that the sitter is voluntarily donating to an organization and Rover donates the money in Rovers name and not in the name of the sitter who actually donated the money in my the first place. Shame on you Rover for poor social skills! This is only one aspect of Rover, there are plenty more that will be discussed. What is your take on a company who takes the money from a donor and the company takes the credit for the donation. Would you use a company like this for sitting your loving pet?

I signed up to work with rover.com petsitting. they have you create a profile and eveything, I got my first petsitting job, not to mention I am recenylt unemployed so I really need this. My first job was to pay $50, to me. I finished to job and went onto rover to get paid and my balance says $-7.45! WHAT!!!! you had to imagine my reaction, to finding out I just watched someomes dog for free!!!! I called rover to inquire about what was going on there must be some mistake. THe Rep on the phone tells me, "Oh I think I know what it is, but let me check this happens all the time." WHAT!!! well, if this is happening all the time then it sounds like there is problem on the rover site and peole arent seeing this. She said well it looks like you checked the box where theres some sort of badge that we can get. Look I could give two shits sbout a badge, I just want to watch people dogs and get paid, not pay rover! Well Needless to say Rover would not fix the problem, told me it was my fault. I cant afford to watch dogs for free. Rover is making there money off of hardworking people off this tiny glitch that i went on the site to find that was clearly already checked for me and convently located under a heading and is greyed out and already checked by rover! DONT BE SCAMMED!
