Poor Workmanship, Lies and Filing a FALSE Police Report

On June 22, 2017 Roto-Rooter replaced my well pump and Friday evening, March 2, 2018, less than 10 months later, it stopped working. I called Roto-Rooter (who advertises 24/7 support) only to be told “sorry, our warranty is only good Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm.” I have a family with several small children so I could not be without water and had to repair it myself. This is what led to me to discover the remarkably poor workmanship (details below) that caused the pump to stop working. I took a video of the issues and Roto-Rooter agreed the quality was terrible and promised a refund, only to tell me repeatedly when I called, “the check is in the mail.” After weeks of hearing this, they told me they had not sent the check after all and said I had to sign a non-disclosure agreement in order to receive my refund.

I agreed, set up an “appointment” that was cancelled twice by Roto-Rooter only to get an email stating that they weren’t going refund me. When I informed Roto-Rooter that I was going to advertise their poor workmanship and lack of ethics to protect other consumers, he tried to bully me into not posting videos and pictures of THEIR poor quality by FILING A FALSE POLICE REPORT. Joel, one of the owners stated I said “IF CELCO DIDN’T GIVE ME A REFUND I WOULD INJURE HIM AND THE BUSINESS” by inflicting bodily harm to him and physically damaging Celco’s Property. I have never threatened him, but I do believe that everyone has a right to hear this story before choosing a plumber.

From the start of the job the two technicians seemed unsure and made several calls for help. In fact I had to remove the pump from the well myself because they were ready to call in a backhoe. They didn’t bring any material which meant I paid for their trips to purchase parts, return the wrong parts, then purchase the correct ones. At the end of the day and a $1700 bill, I had water again.

On Friday, March 2nd, 2018 at 9:00pm our family was again without water. I contacted Roto-Rooter and was told the warranty was only good during the hours 8am to 5pm, Monday through Friday. I expressed concern that this recent failure was a result of poor workmanship to no avail; Joel, the owner, stated I would receive a call later to schedule repairs during the warranty period.

On Saturday, March 3rd I repaired the pump while documenting the poor quality work performed by Roto-Rooter by video, the magnitude of which was staggering. The workmanship issues included:

Water lines, conduit connections, and well cap were not tightened;

Exposed wires creating an electrocution hazard;

Wires pinched between the metal well casing and the well cap;

Submerged wire with burnt insulation from use of torch by Roto-Rooter;

Wires spliced several times because they were cut too short;

Unsecured wires that rubbed through causing 2nd pump failure;

No spacers installed on the water pipe to prevent it from chaffing against the well casing;

No anti-torque device boot installed to prevent the pump from twisting inside the well.

That day, Roto-Rooter called to schedule a service visit. I told Joel I had completed repairs and then I emailed him the videos of the poor work. He stated that the two technicians that did the work were not employed very long and had asked for assistance during the job, but did not receive it. Further, he admitted that the work was sub-par. However, he followed up by stating that since I had fixed their terrible work myself, my warranty was void. I asked for a refund of the labor costs at which time Joel abruptly ended the call stating I obviously had no interest in resolving the issue.

I called Roto-Rooter corporate and was told that since this Roto-Rooter was a franchise, they could not make them give a refund, however they would call and try to help resolve the situation. Joel told corporate and I that the “check was in the mail” on several occasions, with no check every arriving. Then Joel stated I had to sign an agreement to remove the pictures showing their poor quality because it was costing them business. He proceeded to cancel several times and then finally stated he decided not to issue a refund. I feel strongly that he never had any intention of ever providing a refund.

I will never use or recommend Roto-Rooter again, and I will share my experience with as many people as possible so no one is ever taken advantage of by this unethical company.

I was hired on as a sales person for water restoration with Roto Rooter in cincinnati Ohio. My direct manager was Mark Haley which knows nothing about this business, the general manager was Joe Frank he even knows less of this type of work in which they are trying to break into. I will be placing a direct complant with the BBB and the labor board against this company for unfair treatment to employees.

Mark also stated that i was too old for the position i wanted to switch too as i ask him if i could swith from outside sales to outside marketing he said no because the corporate headcourters was looking for a younger person perferabley a female with big b***s.

Beware of this company they will try and suck you into a trap by promising you the world but giving you nothing in return.
