National General Insurance Reviews

  • Apr 17, 2023

I was rear-ended by a customer of National General Insurance. I took my car to the only official BMW repair shop and National General is refusing to pay for the complete repair. They told me BMW was too expensive and they were not going to cover $1200.00 worth of the repair because they did not want to. The SR Adjuster told me too bad they were not going to pay the prices from the repair shop and if I wanted my car fixed there I would have to pay the difference. They admit the accident was 100% the fault of their customer but they were not going to pay it. Good luck. I have filed a complaint with the Insurance Board of Florida, my state rep of Florida, the BBB and now you folks. National General made 5.6 billion dollars in profit in 2020. They did this by denying claims and ripping people off.

National General quoted me coverage and I signed up and paid the first months premium. After that they say they sent me an email where my yearly quote had gone up by 50% due to a faulty headlight incident. This was a ticket issued with no points assessed.

I never received the email, so when I confronted them that I never sided up for the new rate and that if I cancelled they would charge me a penalty, they basically said too bad. If I don't pay, they threatened to sue me for the $13 that they say I owe. So my coverage for 6 days will end up costing more than a single months premium.

Sold me insurance and lied about coverage making me call them and add additional insurance coverage for more money

then when I tried to cancel they either wouldn’t call me back or lied and told me they needed more information

after 8 weeks of calling and giving them info they only refunded me a partial refund

this company is a rip off and if you would ever need them I’m sure they wouldn’t ever pay a claim since you can’t ever reach anyone

I contacted National General Insurance to state my policy should have been cancelled for non payment on 1/15/18 as I did not pay because the vehicle is not in use. I was told only the 3rd part issuer of the policy could do that so I went to the vendor whom refused. I went back to National General and was hung up on by a rep. My issue is had I got an into an accident on 1./16/18 they would have had no problem canceling. The company is trying to get extra me while refusing to cancel the policy on the appropriate date. They are ripping me off. Policy Number: 2005180790

Do not do business with this insurance company. This company was recomnended by OnStar for discounted rates because of the low mileage I put on my car each month. As it turns out, once you agree to the quoted price and pay the down payment, suddenly your premium goes up due to conditions for the discounts thst yoh are not informed of at signing. When I called to insure about the $98.00 increase I was given 24 hours to gather the necessary information or the payments would remain at three increased price. Now I cancelled the policy on 01/12/2018, however, on 01/08/2018 a payment for 298.00 was taken on auto pay. This account was on auto pay since day one. When I called to cancel, I was told my refund would be $22.00, even though I cancelled less than 5 days after the payment. When I question3d the agent, Giovanni, he told me the reason is because I was late. So, there is a 10 dollar late fee. I replied, "Ib am on auto pay, how, can so be late". Giovanni, said, "oh yeah right. " then he said, "there is a $50.00 cancellaticancellation fee that suddenly increased to $72.00, but he coiuld not understand why. He has to abruptly put me on hold to check for Pennsylvania fees that may be reducing my refund,. When He came back on, Giovanni could not give me a straight answer accept to say "you agreed to pay a $898 00 premium by contract and so 23.00 is your refund amount after the fees." But never exactly list all these "fees", even their agents do not list them for you when asked for the information. Don't use this company. They lock you into an actual contract and do not tell you this up front. Also, they hide their fees.

When Hurricane Irma came through our area in central Florida in September, there were also reports of tornadic activity in my neighborhood. As the brunt of it passed during the night, many large trees in the area were torn from the ground with extensive debris scattering.

My coach was tucked in next to the house and the only damage it recieved was a one inch punture in the roof, next to the front a/c unit. This was repaired when it was noted a couple of days later with construction grade material, and has prevented any further entry of water.

A month later, I went up on the roof to check a problem with the rear a/c unit and noted that the roof directly in front of the rear a/c was soft. Then few weeks later while he was working on damage to the house roof, a friend noticed that the coach roof over the soft area was now bubbling up. This is when I reported the claim to National General.

An inspector from the company came out, stood on ladder and took some pictures of the roof, and nothing more. A week later I was informed that they would pay for the hole to be repaired, but not the water damage. Their rationale was the creation of the hole was accidental and acute, but the water damage was a slow leaking process and therefore not covered. They went on to say that the area of softness near the rear a/c is not conducive with the hole near the front a/c.

When I explained to them how water does travel to the lowest spot, and if the coach is not perfectly level, that water from the torrential rains we received will and did travel to the lowest area. They disregarded this arguement and repeated their assessment and denial.

To the bubbling of the hard shell roof, I can only assume that the extreme heat of a Florida summer caused that trapped water to expand and vaporize, causing the increased pressure to push the roof up. They contend that this bubbling of the roof is wear and tear damage.

How can one contend that the acute damage, the hole, be covered as an accidental mishap, but then say the water which the hole allowed to acutely enter is not covered.

I never agreed to enter into a business contract with this company. My old policy was cancelling due to no longer being offered in my area, and they tried to move me onto National General. Because it was a $30 spike in monthly premiums, I declined to do business with the company and found a new plan elsewhere.

I signed no papers with national general. Ever. I in no way, shape, or form agreed to do business with them-in fact; I explicitly stated that I would not be doing business with them. I was not uninsured at any point- yet they are trying to bill me for providing coverage that they cancelled due to non-payment after two weeks-once again, they never should have processed anything, as I explicitly stated I would not be using their company.

When I tried to call and address the matter, they were condescending and snarky, and stated regardless of anything, they provided insurance for those two weeks and I had to pay. When I contacted the local agent, they were rude and informed me that as they weren’t sending me a bill, they had no part of it and don’t bother them about it.

Had to ask multiple times for proof of insurance and never happened. Over billed with late fee when it was the companies mistake. Had proof myself and they didn't want it or listen to me. Only had their Insurance for a very short while. Do not do direct deposit with this company. Trust me. After seeking a new insurance company I found out they make these same mistakes all the time.

NATIONAL GENERAL INSURANCE OPERATES IN 'BAIT & SWITCH' MANOR AND THAT IS A FEDERAL CRIME. I'M SEEKING TO START A CLASS ACTION. And, need to report to State Insurance Investigations boards.

NATIONAL GENERAL INSURANCE initually quotes low rates to obtain your business. HOWEVER, after 2-3 months they increased rates aproximately 25.00/mo or MORE. Then, back bill you for the increased rates.

Prior, I used them for 2 years+ and they previouisly conducted in the same manor. I fell for thier BS the other 2 years. They sent a variety of massive increased bills throughout the year on a yearly quoted policy. And, they only increased my rates after they had my DMV records from the start of the YEARLY QUOTE and only after I had paid on the policy for 2-3 months.

I fell for National General Insurance BS the other years. Not the time, I'm smarter now and been a customer for 2+ years. Now, I have a track-record of DOCUMENTATION of thier BAIT & SWITCH.

I've had car insurance for 30 years. Never in my life did I ever complain or have so many different upgraded bills sent to me - only after I started paying on the quote they gave me after 3 months (each time I renewed). Again, they already had my DMV report when I recieved the quote.

They tried to lie. They had my DMV report 2-3 months ago. And, from previously doing business with them. Then, tried to say they didn't know and I know longer have 'good driver.' BUT, I've had no accidents, tickets or anything.

This company is the worst car insurance company I have ever dealt with. I was signed up for a whole year to get full coverage on all my vhicles through this sorry for an excuse company. I damaged my vehicle slightly by bumping on a shoulder during snow time, and I had it brought to the shop. Called my insurance and they told me that they needed to take pictures of my car. Sent the pictures, one week later, I call back they told me that they still need me to take pictures. Im like, why would you not txt or call me when you said you would? The agent told me that he had emailed and that he appologized for the inconvinience. Im like what???? You guys can do this kinda stuff? 1 week and a half passed, and then they told me that they would bring their own estimator. One more week passes and the estimator had still not arrived. I called them and they had no clue about my case this time. Now they told me that they would have to call him and see what is going on. they now told me that I would have to wait ONE more week until he comes. He comes, and I wait one more week. Now they tell me that they will only cover a certain amount of my car damages but they still ended up valuing my car and gave the shop an estimate. NOW, my shop tells me that they cannot find the parts for that price. They have been trying to get ahold of my insurance and they said that because of holyday hours they havent been in the office and they were sorry for the delay....ITS BEEN ALMOST TWO months. THis damage was worth about 1000 dollars total. 500 of that 1000 is my deductible. for an extra $150 they are now taking 2 more weeks to repraise the amount which they failed to appraise correctly. I called them today, and they didn't even know anything about my case. Same agent. Is this real life? How can a company such as this be in business???? WOW. PLEASE GUYS. LISTEN TO MY ADVICE. DO NOT EVER sign up with this insurance. It will ruin your life. Also, if you want a rental, good luck. They will make you wait until monday to get one even if you call during a business day. They will tell you it will take a week or so, and it will take more than 3 months. Imagine if this was a bigger claim? HOLY COW. RUN AWAY.

I received a quote from National General (GMAC). I switched to them and paid the down payment. After signing up for a policy, they did the typical bait and switch. Then emailed me an updated payment schedule with much higher fees than they quoted me for. Now they say they have contacted me via email or snail mail instructing me that my rates would increase if I did not provide proof of my prior insurer. That is false and a lie that they contacted me and shared any information to me that my insurance premium would increase if I did not contact them and provide proof of my former policy. It's bait and switch, and I wouldn't have switched to this company if it weren't for them quoting me a regular lower rate. They just raise your rate and claim that they contacted you about it, which they did not. Typical bait and switch.

National General Insurance is a rip-off, and unnecessarily exposes their insured to risk by not paying obvious claims.

I was involved in an accident with one of their insured in which they were cited with careless driving. I was not cited in the accident. Yet they denied my claim, stating that I (in their estimation) was 95% responsible and their insured only 5% - though she was cited with careless driving and I was not.

In several interactions with their claims representatives my concerns were dismissed, as were the facts of the accident report indicating that their insured was cited with careless driving and I was not cited.

I suppose they keep their rates low by not paying claims, but they also expose their insured to civil suits that would otherwise be paid by a reputable insurance company.

Stay away from National General Insurance. I am seeking legal representation for a bad-faith claim against this company.
