Merrick Bank Reviews

  • Oct 5, 2023

On 12/1/22 I was alerted via text by Merrick Bank that a transaction of more that $200 had transpired. I immediately called them. Found it was a $1,000 charge I did not authorize. They said it was pending and would take care of it.

A few days later I checked online and discovered they allowed the charge to go through, even though it put me hundreds over my credit limit and even though I'd told them it was not my charge. The only proof they had was the name of the fraudster, the amount, and an SQ code. I filed an appeal twice. They removed the charge and then would put it back on at least four times throughout the next several months. They had no proof it was my charge. In the end they said it was my normal charge amount I'd made in the past and they found it to be accurate.

I have over 80 pages of certified letters I sent them, phone conversations with dates, times, and people I spoke with. In the end they said they had no way of reaching the merchant and that I might be better equipped since I'd done business with them and I should see out the merchant. Through my own research, which took hours and hours, this was a fraudulent charge using Square Trade for sunset photography in Idaho (I'm in Michigan). I didn't even know what sunset photography was. I had to google it. It's photography taken at sunset. Why on earth would I order such a service on the other side of the continent?

Through BeenVerified, which I know is not 100% accurate, I find this personal has a less than desirable background, menial past job history, never worked in photography, and had since moved to Port Charlotte, FL. Merrick Bank has been harrassing me with phone calls, emails, and letters, adding late fees and interest on top of it. Then recently they sent an offer letter to cut it back to $600 and most recently $400. I owe them zero, and I don't trust them.

After I confirmed the $1,000 charge was removed and I paid off my balance and confirmed I was at zero balance, I closed the account over the phone, which was verified with a secondary person. And a few days later, though my account was now closed, they reinstated the $1,000 charge.

I've contacted the Consumer Protection Agency who directed me to the FTC where they filed a report on my behalf and offered up form letters to send, but I'd been sending letters to Merrick Bank via certified mail right along, about eight letters. They continue to send me the same rote response -- that I am responsible and am expected to pay.

I thought the purpose of using a credit card is so you're protected against fraud and would get reimbursed. In this situation I never used the card. It sat in my desk drawer at home and was used sparingly for not more than $300 at a time.

I believe the fraudster may have gotten my credit card information through a data breach with Equifax a few years earlier; that the information lay dormant and then the information was sold on the dark web. I relayed this information to Merrick Bank, but it feel on deaf ears.

I have also written Equifax as I am part of the data breach, and while I sent them all supporting documentation and written report via USPS overnight (with confirmation it arrived in Merrick Bank's PO Box0, I have yet to hear back. I since called Equifax and they're looking into the whereabouts of the packet.

It's going on a year. Now Merrick Bank has contacted the credit bureau and collections is next. I believe them continuing to hold me accountable for a charge I did not make is because I closed out my account is an act of retribution. I am 60 years old and have always paid my bills. I am an upstanding citizen who has worked for everything I've ever gotten. I hold firm that this is not my charge and I cannot believe the number of times I've broken out in a rash or lost sleep over this, not to mention the countless hours trying to prove my point. This is such poor business practice. And they're a MasterCard company. Whatever happened to backing your client? I was with them for over 15 years.

Do not apply for or use any Merrick Bank credit cards period! First of all, they will definitely tempt you and reel you inif you have bad credit. That's who they target. And they'll give you a nice sized line of credit and of course you'll take it because nobody else will give you a chance. Don't do it!!!!! OK, if you do decide to do it, make sure you pay these people off ASAP. Don't make minimum payments just pay it off. OK, first, when you make a payment, they'll send it through, tell you thank you for your payment, it comes out of your account. OK. Cool. Next thing you know they're calling talking about your payment was sent back so they're charging you an extra $35 late fee. Like wtf!? How? You know what they do!???? THEY send the money back to your account so they can charge you extra!! These people are ridiculous!!!! OK next... My cards and cash were stolen-- well my whole purse and my autistic daughter's iPad, from out of my car while I was literally standing there pumping gas and my kids were asleep in the back! Yes! These people drive up beside me, one got out and opened my passenger door and stole my purse and stuff while I was turned towards the gas pump. Like omg who does that!? Anyway, they used my cards within 10 minutes of taking my stuff. Every other company refunded my money and gave me a new card. Merrick promised to do it. But never did. They told me OK we will send you a form via mail and you have to return it. Ummm I got a letter in the mail saying the form is coming next. That's all I ever got. When I called they kept saying the same thing. When I got my bill I got a letter with it saying to please pay the bill as usual including the disputed amount and after they get the form they never sent, back from me, they'd refund me my money!!! What!? Are you insane!? Ummmm cancel this card now! And no im not paying you money someone stole from me. Needless to say, I had to get an attorney to get them to do right. In the end, they stole $600 from me and my last bill was like $1500. Wtf!? I had to get a lawyer. These people are scam artists. The devil is in control in America!!

I've had Merrick Bank for a few years now and I never had a problem with them until now. Made a payment 2/6..bill was due 2/8/17. Later on I received an email that it posted but yet today 2/11/17 I received an email stating that my payment was returned. For what? My checking account is in good standing with sufficient funds to cover the payment.

I called them up and the first rep said he couldn't help me because my account was in collections. Collections? why? I've never missed a payment or paid late. The rep then transferred me to the "collections" department. Spoke to a rep named 'Ashley", first thing she says to me "so I see you have a question about your returned payment" I say to her "how about we first address this issue about my account being in collections, what is going on?"

So she stays quiet for a few seconds and her response is "yeah it's in collection for a missed payment of $40" What?! I explained to her that I made the payment and the payment posted. I'm seeing it firsthand on my computer screen and my bank account is not showing anything being returned.

Now due to this fiasco my next month's minimum payment is $100. I asked her why was my payment "returned" and she then told me "i don't know, call your bank.

Merrick bank you are a bunch of scam artists and I would not do business with you ever! After reading many of these reviews and now my personal experience, I really wish they shut you down. You guys are just awful!

A year ago, I got an offer from this bank to help me with my credit rebuilding process and approved me for a $600 credit line and after 6 months of paying on time, they would automatically increase my limit to double. It is their "Double Up" offer.

I have always paid on time but I was on the road and did not have computer access, so I called the service center and talked to a gentleman there and he took all the information for my payment. I always pay the balance every month. A couple of weeks later I get a letter from the bank stating that my payment was late! I called them right away and the person that answered the phone, after getting all my personal info, he pulled up the payment screen and told me that my payment was taken a few weeks back but it was never processed. The first person never hit the SEND button to process the payment.

Now, I am being denied a credit increase because they are the ones that screwed the payment up. The second person processed the payment and because it was made on time originally, he made sure that I was not charged the "LATE FEE" because it was not my fault and he apologized to me over and over.

Not that I need or spend the $600 in any month, but for those rebuilding their credit, a credit limit increase is good for the credit report. But to deny me on their screw-up is out of line. They gave me a week ago, a $200 increase, but funny how I qualify for the $200 but not the $600 increase. I have called and talked to many people over and over again, and I have hit a brick wall. I think this offer of "Double-Up" is just a scam. With bad credit (my credit score is 655) and the interest rate that they charge you (27.40%) and then they screw with the real people that are working to improve their credit, they find ways to keep your score low.

I think everyone knows what a boost to your credit score is with an increase in "AVAILABLE CREDIT" on your credit report. Banks like Merrick wants to keep you low so you have to keep using them.

This company has the most ****** terms I ever seen, beside the regular minimum payment ( or the amount the client desire to pay) which already include 23% they charge an additional amount 2 days later almost identical to the minimum payment the client just made! How this can be remotely legal? I own other credit cards ( capital one, citi first saving etc) none of them do such. This is incredible dishonest and greedy. Even if you make payments and don't use the card you always are going to end with a third of the amount you paid as a balance! Do yourself a favor, if you receive this piece of junk in the mail disposed in the garbage as soon as you received.

I have had a Merrick Bank credit card for about 10 years. Always paid on time and have never been late. I had a balance of about $2,200.00 @ about 20% interest. Not only was Merrick charging me about $40 a month in interest I was also being charged a service fee of $4. So I was being ripped off for about $528 a year from these guys. If that is all this credit card company has to offer I'm out. I called and requested the monthly fee be removed. The lady put me on hold and came back and told me Merrick cannot remove the fee at this time. 10 years and can't remove the fee at this time? So I closed the account and paid the balance. I was a sucker for 10 years. My credit score is 790. How good does it have to be? Let's put these companies and companies like them out of business.

I have had an account with Merrick bank for years. I get a statement in the mail every month despite signing up for electronic invoices and I pay my bill every month.

I kept getting emails from them saying they were unable to deliver to my address (despite getting bill every month) and to click on the link to verify my account.

I just assumed it was phishing email, who in their right mind will click on that sort link these days. When I logged in to pay my bill 5 days early this month as always, I noticed it showed I have no available credit, so I called them.

A very rude customer service representative told me my account was closed because they could deliver mail to my address and the account can not be reopened, they will send me a letter telling me how I might be able to reopen my account.

I asked representative and his supervisor does this make sense to you to close an active that is being paid on time every month, and was told it was closed because I did not verify my account by the email link.

I am naturally pretty ticked off that they closed my account, nothing that they said makes any sense, and I think this is unfair credit practices. They should not be allowed to treat people like this

After three months of not receiving a statement *( they blamed the post office), I paid my card off completely including late fees and closed my account. I stopped receiving statements monthly once I refused to pay for a new credit card after the one I had stopped working. I still incurred late fees if I missed the payment date. I would have NEVER missed a payment, if I would have received a statement. I never once received a call, a letter, or an email from them, just late fees on my account. Every time I called and asked for emailed statements, I was told I should be receiving them and if not I should consult with my internet provider. When I complained I did not receive any mailed statements, I was told to complain to the post office... When I asked about waiving the late fees, I was told it is not their policy regardless of the issue. They have now lost me and my friends and family as customers for life. Funny enough, the most I owed was 740 dollars, including late fees.
