Maurice Rivera advertised on Ebay as retrodospc, offering to look at your Nakmichi Dragon for $25 for a repair extimate. I paid for this in 2013 and dropped off the unit, as there was no need to ship since I lived locally. This led to bringing other units to him for repair. As I he had posted on Stereo to Go that he had rebuilt a large boombox, I asked him if he could overhaul a JVC M90 for me, and use an older unit i had from the 80's for parts. He took on the job ad said it would take some time. During this time, i asked him to do minor maintenance on my other Dragon and a Sony Walkman (the $400 top of the line one).
After this, he never retruned my phone calls. I eventually stopped by his home with a buddy and found him talking with the neighbors in the basement apartment. He was shocked to see us, and vowed he would get everythng back to me, while the boombox project was not done and the other two items were not there. About two months later, he said the Dragon was ready. I went with my lady friend and he gave me a Dragon with a different serial number but in very good shape. I had him sign in front on my lady friend that he still had the boomboxes and Sony Walkmen.
After a little while, he did not contact me. So I called him and the same old thing started again. He would not return phone calls. I sent him a card asking him to please settle up and never a response. I stopped by in late 2017 and the lady on the first floor said he still lives there. So I went to the nearby police station and asked to file a report. They said I had to go downtown and file a small claims to gte my stuff returned or equivalent dollar amount. From a $25 haf hour consultation with a lawyer through the Illinois Bar Association, the lawyer said the amount was too small ($1800) and that I could do this myself.
This part had been a huge pain. I filed a detinue claim downtown and paid the sheirff to serve Maurice, who of course does not answr his door. Now I am using a private serving company who, surprise surprise, also has. no one answering the door. Now I will need to go downtown to have him served by a notice, so then he cannot hide from appearing, and get arrested if he doesn't.
I just saw from a search he has been arrested four times, including twice in 2017. In June, he was arrested for Theft / Deception Intent for >$500 and less then $10K. This is exactly what I am doing!!! I am wondering if this other person had to go through all the hoops I am doing before finally getting the police to arrest him.
I don't care how long this takes or how many trips downtwon, I will get my equipment back or equivalent money, and all court costs. Maurice could save money by just giving me back my two boxes now and I would give him a break on the Walkman. If he continues to hide, I will want everything and full court costs.
