Very intrusive scam

This scam is really intrusive. A bubbly young women came into my back porch and rang the back door - which is normally not where anyone I don't know arrives. I thought it was my son being dropped off so immediately answered and she went off on this never ending talk that was really hard to follow - she had a million forms, started asking me questions and wouldn't leave. She wanted $230 for books for kids in the hospital! I am more than happy to donate books to kids. But I could tell something wasn't right, but I didn't know how to get her to leave and was very vulnerable with someone basically in my house!! I ended up giving her a check for $46 and then stopped payment on it once she left. But this is very disturbing. I don't know who to even report this to. I may call my local police. I would hate for this to happen to kids home alone. Arghh so frustrating.

Mailboxmedia.com

I live in Greenwood Vilage Co and I too just scammed on Oct. 16, 2016. My husband and I wrote a check for $405.00 to help out a black boy who lives on the streets of Tenessee working for Mailbox Media . He was selling magazines and works on commission. We ordered 3 magazines for two years and realized we were paying way too much for the magazines but thought we were helping out the young man because he shared he would get 35% commission. Tonight he came back to our house and said they could not process our check because I made it out correctly to Mailbox Media.com but in the left hand corner I had written it was for donation for Urban Development because that is what his literature had said. When we told him we would not give him another check unless he returned our original he looked forlorn and left. It was then I googled Mailbox Media. com and found out I have been scammed!

Me too!

I live in the Bay Area, Northern California and just got scammed and I consider myself pretty savvy, but had a soft heart because of the holidays. A "lovely" woman named Latike, sob story as above (including being molested which is why she supports these causes) and I gave $150 dollars. An instinct had me look up the organization last night and I discovered the scam. Cancelled my check. These people are good at sales, the info and receipt looks legit and she even had me sign a book and describe her services so she could show her boss. This is a SCAM!

Tall, african-american man came to our door "selling" magazine subscription, offering option to have it sent to a boys and girls club. My husband gave his credit card # over the phone to a guy obviously working with the guy knocking on doors.

Just found out it is a scam/ called credit card company to cancel.

A man came to my door and started telling me a story. He said he had four daughters and used to be an engineer and was laid off. He claimed his wife died 8 months ago, and then something distracted him, and changed his answer to 7 months ago. He also said his friend tried to kill him and shot him 8 times, and showed me an indent on his skull claiming that was from a bullet. He then proceeded to try to sell me books that he claimed were going to a group home to help kids. He even asked me what my profession was and why I was interested in his cause. I tried to turn him away, but he was very persistent and made me nervous. I didn't want to cause I scene, so I paid for the cheapest option by check, which was $230!

As soon as he got my check, he left no problem. Knowing that couldn't possibly be the cheapest option, and noticing that by the way the point system worked (he earned points based on sales) that it was a pyramid scam, once he finally left my house I immediately looked it up and sure enough it is a scam. I put a Stop Payment on my check and called my bank immediatlely, as well as took money out of my savings to make sure they couldn't take my money. I have read multiple similar stories on the internet so please be on alert for these people! The company is based in Arizona, but I see that they have people here in San Diego all the way to Massachusetts.

Two young African American men in their 20s knocked on my door at 7:30 on a Saturday night. They were well dressed and polite. I asked them what they were selling and they told me: "Oh, we're not selling anything ma'am; we are working to keep youth like us off the streets and help get educational books to underpriveledged children."

It was raining outside and so I invited them in. I listened to both of their personal stories of gang violence, loss, and street crimes. The older youth, Zaire, was mentoring the younger, Dominic. Zaire said that they really needed $360.00 to meet their quota for books that would be sent to the charititable organization of my choice. I told him that I did not have that kind of money but might be able to do something about half that because I really wanted to help.

For $180.00, Zaire told me that a Sesame Street book would be sent every month to the Battered Women's Shelter for one year. I gave him cash and seeing the $200 cash, he mentioned that I could give them a tip, so I said keep the change.

What a silly moron to have fallen prey to this incredible scam that appeals to the sentiments of empathic people. Further, around the Christmas giving season, this is a real ploy to take advantage of folks' generosity!

Instead of going online to verify the scam while they were in my living room, I trusted their stories. I even poured them a glass of wine as they said it was their last house for the evening! Our friends were waiting on us to go to dinner, so I escorted them out. It was not until the following day that I verified that I had been SCAMMED! The address on the receipt for Mailbox Media is a UPS Store in Glemdale, AZ! I can only hope that a Battered Women's Shelter somewhere in Austin, TX will receive some Sesame Street books out of this!

Magazines not received from Mailbox Media

Check for $80 to Mailbox Media salesperson for Atlantic Monthly subscription was cashed on June 14, 2016. It is now Nov 14, 2016 and no magazines have been received. Went to their website, mailboxmedia.us and entered a request for information on my subscription. Based on other people's experience, I doubt I will get the magazines or my money returned.

A few weeks ago I answered the door at about 5:30 p.m. to a youngish black woman and man selling subscriptions to earn points in order to further their education. I was familiar with the spiel because I'd supported it on past occasions. I do not remember the name of the distributor but I had always received the magazines I ordered.

This time I had no interest in getting magazines again, so I made a gift to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Baltimore - a Sesame Street publication and an Encyclopedia - to the tune of $288.00. I questioned the rep, Lakesha Wilson, about the wording on the receipt and she assured me I could track the delivery on their website and even receive a tax donation.

Unfortunately, I ignored my intuition and did not cancel the check...even though it took them 3 weeks to cash it. When it did go through, I went to the website to 'track' delivery...with no luck! I messaged them through the website and though I received a response, it wasn't at all satisfactory.

I feel like I've been scammed, but I will continue to follow up. Buyer beware!!

Watch out for the fine print...

My story is identical. I was made nervous by the intrusion. I did not believe the sob story followed by a pushy sale. I too placed a stop payment on the check once the stranger left and I had a long talk with my kids about racing to the door and opening it for strangers.

After placing the stop payment, I went to the receipt which allows 3 days to cancel the order in writing. Then, I read the green disclaimer above my signature:

"Signature serves as authorization to electronically represent my check for face value and state authorized fees without further notification if it should be dishonored. All insufficient, stop payment, or account closed checks will be subject to a minimum service fee of $30.00 for further details of customer rights see the reverse side of the customer receipt."

I'll be interested to see how much money I lose in the end. Unfortunately this could be a very costly lesson learned.

A black male and black female came down the street with a long sob story not true i called the police. They were selling magazines

  • Jul 14, 2016

2nd chance sob story

First thing in the morning I plan to stop my check a 3 year subscription to Weight Watches Magazine for $64. The young African=American man (late 20's - mid 30's) asked if there was someplace he could sit down (meaning inside the house). I said I don't let people I don't know in the house. When I went to write the check for $64, he said it was $84. I asked why and he said to help pay for his clothes to do this job. I pointed out the price list and he said ok---if you don't ask, you don't get. I should have followed my gut feeling right then and sent him off. It started to rain hard and he asked me for an umbrella which I did not give him.

Not receive my order

On May 27 2016 I purchase Magazines on the amount of $144.00 to a sales man name Josh, I am still waiting for the magazines, can someone let e know whats going on,

SCAM or not?

I am another "good soul" who listened to the speech and ultimately ended up buying a subscription. Now finding this. At the end of the day - where does the money really go? How badly are these (sales) people being scammed themselves? Or are they the actual scammer? There are SO many stories I've read online, of course - after they walked away with my check - that talk about how these sales people are "left behind" if they don't make a quota or whatever. I've even read that I won't ever get the magazine I ordered. Ultimately, I would be somewhat okay if indeed the sales person himself got SOMETHING out of it - obviously not all of the money, and probably not even 1/2 - but I am a sucker and give to charity ALL the time. And so - here I am, scammed. And probably out of $64 and won't get my subscription. NOW WHAT? Do I cancel the check? Probably not worth it. SO frustrating.
