KAN KUN MEXICAN RESTAURANT BEAVER, UT is a true HOUSE OF HORRORS STRAIGHT OUT OF THE HILLS HAVE EYES MOVIE! After traveling on the highway for several hours we made a mistake we will regret for years to come by stopping at this hole in the wall Mexican diner that looks like it was built out of an old condemned house or shed. I suppose our first warning should have been the way they spelled Cancun "Kan Kun” Mexican diner. We laughed about it at the time and we’d had great meals at other similar looking beat up properties so we thought since there was literally nothing else in this town we’d give it a try.
Our second warning should have been when we walked in we were literally the only people in the diner. We sat at the table didn’t think anything of it and after a long wait the waitress came out from the back room and asked for our order. We ordered three alcoholic drinks to start. She looked at us and said she didn’t know if they could serve alcohol and asked to check our IDs. (This is when it got spooky and bizarre). The woman instead of checking out identification there at the table slowly walked away without saying a word taking all our IDs to the back of the restaurant. We again thought this was odd but we are easy going and laughed about it and continued to look at the menu while we waited. We talked and joked about how hard it was to find a place to have a drink in Utah while she was gone (this will be relevant later). She returned more than 10 minutes later and said she could serve us each one shot of our choosing and asked us if we wanted chips and salsa while we waited, we said sure. Keep in mind their menu actually states chips and salsa are free for the first bowl and the second bowl is $2. We again thought t was odd we could only order shots and we’re getting a little uneasy but we ha sheen driving so long and we knew Utah was odd so we went with it.
We ordered our one shot each and asked for our ID back. She apologized and said she’d go get them from the back. She returned first giving us the chips and salsa without our IDs which she had now had in her possession for more than twenty minutes. I said i need to get our items back and we have been waiting a long time for our shots. She apologized and again vanished to her secret room. When she returned she said she had heard our conversation on their cameras and that she did not feel comfortable serving us alcohol. We at this point we’re terrified that these people been doing who knows what with our licenses in the back of their diner and now they had literally told us they were listening to our table conversation on their audio video camera from The back. At this point all we wanted to do was to get the hell out of there as quickly and safely as possible. She gave us the IDs and we said we wanted to go and that’s fine we don’t need the drinks. She said hold on I’ll get your check?! We had consumed no alcohol no food other than the chips that are free that we waited half an hour to get so we were confused but i was freaked out enough not to want trouble so i said fine figuring a few bucks couldn’t hurt to get away from these criminals that probably photo copied our info in their house of horror. We waited several more minutes and finally I said screw it and pulled out a $10 bill because it was all i had on me in cash and left it on the table.
We all began walking to the door and of course as soon as we did they ran out from the back saying here’s your check.. When they handed it to us we were beyond shocked to see they had charges $42.90!! They charged $6 for the chips and salsa that their own menu said was complimentary and they charged us $12 EACH for the shots we ordered that they decided not to serve us?!?! We said we were not paying this and began to leave they told us if we left they’d call the police and they saved all our info and they’d tell the police we had been drinking if we tried to drive. This type of blizzare hole in the wall highway extortion was the most horrific thing i was on this road trip with my wife and my elderly mother. My mother actually had a panic attack and was shaking we literally were in a strange town in the middle of nowhere in the UTAH DESERT the only people in this diner with these criminals telling us they could put us in jail if we don’t pay them $42 dollars for CHIPS and SALSA. I won’t even tell you the rest because it would embarrass my mother but these people are beyond evil, and in a small town like this they might control the police that they go to church with being the only diner in town but all i can do is write this and hope we can spare some other sweet normal travelers the horrific nightmare of someone extorting you and stealing your money on the highway and knowing there’s nothing you can do about it if you want to get away.
If we save one other person from this criminal scheme then this post is worth it. Who knows how many they’ve done this to but if enough of us post about our experiences then hopefully justice will be served people will be protected and these people will end up in jail where they belong or at least out of business so they don’t have a front for their illegal activity.
