Joseph Wisness Construction Reviews

  • Jun 15, 2017

My husband and I hired Joe Wisness Construction for three rather large projects around our house.

Joe is a slum house flipper at best. He is not in any way a true carpenter, contractor, handyman etc. He is unreliable, lies about where he's at and when he's going to show up. He expects payment before a job is completed and will use his sick wife as an excuse to tug a people's heart strings. He should not be let into anyone's house to do any work and good luck getting a legit itemized invoice or receipts for any materials used for your project. Below is a summary of our journey with Joe – enjoy.

1. Soffit, fascia, downspouts

2. Refinish hardwood floors / install tile on entry way / trim

3. Order and install windows.

Here goes…

1. He ordered the wrong downspouts for the house and when we asked him about it he said that he wasn't able to put the same style back on because they didn't make them anymore so he installed them incorrectly to leave a gap under the hole that connects to the gutters.

The fascia which was installed last fall is already bubbling - can you say "hung too tight"? He also covered up the trim leading to the support poles on our front porch and told us he would fix it but never has.

2. Now moving on to the hardwood floors. We previously had our back two bedrooms on our ranch home refinished about 4 years ago. We told him that we believed the flooring company only used urethane and our goal was to get the floors to look natural, but he insisted they used a blonde/natural finish. So we told him that we just wanted all the floors to match as closely as possible but do understand that wood, overtime, can change color due to environmental conditions. He said not to worry he's a "perfectionist" and will have no problems matching the finish. Well he sanded the floors down stained them with a "natural" color stain. Well, natural stain has a cherry finish, although nice looking, did not match the other floors and hallway. He refinished the floor again, a little closer this time but not perfect. In the interest of just getting the project done because we were already at a few weeks, we just went with the color that he put down. He did not account for the laundry shoot when hanging trim so there are nails now sticking through that. He took two weeks to install the final threshold and had an excuse for everything when we'd ask him why it's taking so long to complete the last leg of the project when in reality it was because he already had his money. OH AND THE FLOOR WAS NOT CLEANED PROPERLY - THE FINISH HAS SAW DUST IN IT AND LOOKS DULL AND GRAINY. This is not our first floor we had finished; the other company got it right - shame on us for hiring a "friend".

3) The windows - we had one new window installed by Pella in '06. It has a nice wooden frame with a nice wooden window sill. Our house came with the older marble sills which are nice, but I wanted to exchange the two kitchen windows to match the Pella window since the kitchen is about to be refinished and both rooms will be opened up to be one dining room kitchen area. Joe did not write this down any of the THREE times I told him this and ordered the wrong freaking windows. When we confronted him, he called us liars and told my husband that I neglected to tell him what kind of windows to order and that all I said was to order Pella windows. In the interest of getting started, I decided it was no big deal and that we would just deal with the sills, they won't look bad, just won't be as deep. To add insult to injury HE CRACKED, yes CRACKED one of the marble sills and wasn't going to tell us about it. Then to fix it, he put a little silicone in the crack and left for the day. As if I wasn't going to notice, my dog's food bowl is right beneath that window. That's just a summary of everything that went on.

I could go on and on, but instead, I'm going to do what everyone who gets ripped off by an illegitimate contractor does, and that's complain on the internet in hopes to warn others to be on the lookout for this scammer. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR HOME IMPROVEMENT - DON'T HIRE JOE!
