My 250G hard drive started to fail with SMART reporting some bad clusters. I googled Fields Data and their website stated prices starting @ $199.00. I sent the details of my hard drive and the fact it has bad clusters and asked for a quote to recover just the data from my user profile. Their website indicated the data should be recoverable and priced between $400 and $500.

I started to receive calls from Kris Nordberg offering up support for the steps to recover my data. At that time I told Kris I was only interested in recovering the 40G of data under my user profile. Kris talked as he was going to work with me and keep me up to date. For the next three days, Kris called me telling me the status of the recovery. Finally he contacted me and said 95% 0f my data (174G) was recovered. I reminded Kris that I only needed the 40G under my user’s profile.

I then received an email with a link to a server where my data resided. There was a directory structure of my users profile (40G) plus 135G of data I did not need. I called Kris and he told me the price was now $950 plus $75 for a hard drive that they would copy the data to. I reminded Kris that I did not request or need the 135G of data but was interested in the user profile data. Kris then told me the price was not data driven and the price would still be over $1000 for any or all of my data.

I told Kris this price was twice what I expected and that I would need a day or two to think it over. From that point forward, Kris's attitude changed from helpful to very distant. Kris would not listen to my requests for reduced price due to the quotes I received and the data that I wanted. Kris's responces became very short or nonexistent. I told him I thought the price was too high for this work and he said he would instruct his techs to reverse the data recovery and return the hard drive.

It makes no sense to me to perform the work, then reverse the work all for no monies. I would have paid Fields the amount near the quote but Kris would not consider it.

Now my expectations are when and IF I receive my hard drive back, it will be destroyed! At that point in time I will file a BBB complaint against Fields Data Recovery. I would suggest that you never use Fields Data Recovery. There are alot of reputable companies out there.

Fields Data Recovery practices pricing bait and switch.

I contacted them about recovering some personal data (wedding pictures) from an older MacBook Pro with a glass hard drive. I told them the data was not worth much more than $300 to me. They said they could do it but I needed to ship them my computer. They sent me a shipping label and I purchased a specially designed box for shipping a laptop and sent it to them.

A week went by and I was contacted with a quote of $960. I told them again the data was only worth $300 to me and to please ship my computer back in the box I purchased for $29. They told me I needed to pay $60 for shipping so I gave them my credit card number. It was right around this time that dozens of my accounts started getting hacked. Is was as if they sold my data to hackers.

After several weeks of repeated phone calls and emails, I received my computer back. They basically threw it into an Express Pad Pak and then put that into a small UPS Express Box.

When I opened the box I discovered the screen on the computer was shattered. When I tried to turn the computer on it just flashed an icon. I took it to a local computer repair shop and they informed me that not only was the screen shattered but the screen hinge was broken and several keys did not work. What even stranger was that the computer did not have a hard drive inside it.

I then contacted them about the missing hard drive, my shipping box and the broken computer. They did after several days find my hard drive and they shipped it to me. As far as replacing the broken computer they first kept referring me to different people. I was finally given to a person in customer service named Anna. She took all my information and was very nice about everything. She told me that they had filled a claim with UPS. I thought this was strange because it did not appear to be a shipping issue as much as a packaging issue but they insisted on blaming UPS.

Several more weeks went by and I decided to call and follow up. This is when the lies began. Anna told me that a claim had been filled and UPS agreed to pay the replacement amount of $2000. A week went by and I called again to follow up. I was put in contact with Todd Taylor who told me Anna no longer worked there. I told him what she told me. I then called UPS to find out what had been done. They told me that no claim had been filled. So everything concerning my computer to this point had been a lie.

I then filed my own claim with UPS. I took 7 pictures of the crappy packaging they used and sent it all to UPS. They rejected the claim because of how it was shipped. The last email I received was from Ruth Holt. her are her words;

Good evening

If you continue to call myself childish names I will not be prepared to assist you any further.

I have contacted our rep at ups and awaiting a status update to provide yourself as evidence of the Claim so that you can see we did raise a claim on your behalf.

Please do not insult me again otherwise this will be my final communication with yourself I will not tolerate your abusive and accusatory emails.

We do not tolerate clients abusing staff.

my reply;

Apparently, you have zero policy concerning abusing customers because UPS is not going to pay this claim because of how you packaged the shipment. I know this because I filed a claim after your staff repeated lied about filling a claim like you are doing now. This is not an insult simply the truth. Call this number 1 800 742-5877 and give them this tracking number 1Z V5E 961 03 4844 7251. UPS did nothing wrong! The only thing I need to hear from you is when my check will arrive. I am also going to share with UPS how you blame them for your incompetence. If you don’t like being called a liar stop lying. No claim was ever filled by Fields Data Recovery! You don’t have a rep at UPS! All you’re doing is stalling for time. Court documents are in transit now!

As you can see they are still trying to blame UPS for this issue. Is this the kind of company you want to trust with your data? I'm just glad this computer did not have very much up to date data.

Fields Data Recovery

A big company that preys on its customers and then capitalizes on the ignorance of its customers to extort money, even to the extent of charging international transaction fees whereas the company is based here in the United States.

They had sweet talked me into sending in my inaccessible drive, with promises of free diagnosis and evaluation. They provided excellent customer services from the very first time I spoke to them on the phone to the time they received my drive. I had sent in a 1TB WD passport external hard drive that dropped off the table making the files inaccessible.

Soon after my drive was received, everything changed. No calls or information beyond the one week time frame. I had to call to find out what’s going on. I later got an email stating that they had recovered all my files on the WD, full recovery for $990 (A total of 17,873 recoverable files and 322 folders.). I questioned why they are not telling me how many GB were recovered. This was deceptive, since they want you to think that many files or data were recovered.

They offered same day discount for $770 for people that purchased the same day it was recovered. I quickly paid the $705 to take the deal, thinking that all my files has been recovered as was indicated. After they received my money, they sent me a 16 GB flash drive containing the 4.16 GB of the recovered file and folders. When I accessed the flash drive, more than 90 percent of the so called recovered folders and files were empty or missing. Remember that I sent in a 1TB WD external drive, which contained more than 700 GB of my personal data.

When I called back to complain, the account manager stated that the information was in the email that was sent to me, which was not true as I have copies of all the emails. He wanted me to pay another $990 for them to try to recover some more data. I demanded to know how much data they would recover this time and that they should guarantee me that at least more that than the initial 4.16 GB of data would be recovered if I paid again. He would not guarantee me anything until I paid another $990. My thought process was that, if I continued to pay $990 for less than 5 GB of data recovery from this company, then how much would I have paid them to recover the entire 800 GB on the drive. This company is a scam. Please stay away from them or else they will milk you dry by capitalizing on your ignorance on the computer jargons they will communicate to you and your intent to recover and not loose precious memory and data stored on the drive.

I immediately requested for the return of my original disk. I received it about a week later and sent it out to . To my surprise, they recovered the entire 1TB drive and repackaged it into another 1TB drive they sent to me.

Shame on them. New Customers, please beware because their actions can be described as manipulative, calculating, conniving and devious to further extort money from me and other customers by utilizing the position and the computer ignorance of unsuspecting and desperate customers who are seeking to recover lost data files.

SCAM I sent my hard drive to them in April of 2017, they called when they received it and said they would check it out and let me know the cost, they advertised that if the cost was to high they would send it back. they quoted me $1000 to recover the data. That was way more than I expected and I told him I could not afford it, he said he'd send it back - then later came back and said his boss let him discount to $800 - still to steep for me so I asked him to send it back. I hadn't received it after several months so I reached back out and he said he did not have my address, not sure how he wouldn't it was on the form I filled out. Anyway I sent the address, still never received it, I have been reaching out for months and am not getting any responses. I don't have the hard drive to this day.

This company pulls you in with low initial quotes, promises you that they have found all of the files you needed, charges you HUNDREDS of dollars and then doesn't deliver what they promised. Their customer service is terrible and they make no effort to fix their wrong doings. They return your property in broken shape so that you cannot even try to have someone else fix it. DON'T believe their trust pilot score or the reviews on their website. They delete any bad reviews that they can. I filed a complaint with BBB and they still refused to even attempt to fix the problem. Very disappointed. *Full Story/Complaint is below*

After reviewing my drive, Fields Data confirmed that they had an integrity recovery of 99.5% “which is the highest it can possibly get. It basically means a perfect recovery" (email 4.18.17). Upon quoting me a whopping $940.00, I asked if the files I needed were recovered, specifically a folder with multiple sub folders. I told them that while there were a lot of files on my hard drive, the only ones of any value to me were the ones in that main folder and sub folders. The rep, Eric Keck, stated that he found “tons of info on the rhythm and rhymes…you did have 20,000 files that were recovered” (email 4.18.17) in which he attaches a screen shot of multiple files. I told him that $940 was quite a bit more than the “average” price of $250 they quoted me over the phone; he said that he’d look for discounts (bringing the price to $760). I told him that I’d like to look over the list. He sends me a link and says that I can’t see any files, just the list, but that my “recovery was very successful” (email 4.18.17). I told him that I didn’t see the folder I was needing from the link he sent me.

He then sends me cut off screen shots of a rhythm and rhymes folder with a few files listed underneath. I ask him “files on the rhythm and rhymes folder were fully recovered?” and he said “yes, they were” (email 4.18.17). He then sends me an email saying that they are moving storage facilities and that if I pay today, they will reduce the price to $700.00. I pay the amount under the impression that my precious files (1000s of hours of work) were salvaged.

When I received my USB drive (not my hard drive), I opened the files. There were literally only 10 files when I searched for rhythm & rhymes (mostly pdfs and corrupted copies of the same file over and over) and maybe 30-50 picture files. No full Rhythm & Rhymes folder (like pictured in the screenshots) and NOT ONE single document or file of any kind. There were only a few files that were even dated from this YEAR! I emailed them right away stating that the files I needed, that I specifically told them I needed, were not there and that they had basically told me that 99% of what was on my drive was recovered. Eric replied with “from everything I have seen they have [were recovered]” (email 5.1.17). They referred me to a new customer service rep, Dan Rapp. He logged in to my computer and searched for the files, stating that he found them. I looked at them and told him that those were a few pictures, not the documents or mass number of files I was told were on there. He couldn’t find anymore and told me that he’d speak to the customer service department about a refund.

5.8.17-I emailed. He said they were “actively working on my case”. 5.17.17-I emailed. He said that they were continuing to work on my device. 5.31.17-I emailed, fully frustrated at this point and told them that I felt this had been a fraudulent act and that I would like the files I was promised, or a refund. I received no other response. I decided to call the company and ask to speak to a manager; they sent me to a voicemail. I called or emailed every week and was either sent to voicemail, told that I would be emailed immediately, or given an excuse to why I couldn’t speak with the manager on the phone (conference call, he went home for the day, he’s on the other line, etc.), told they were still working on it, or ignored.

On 7.12.17 I sent an email stating that I would be calling my credit card company with the fraudulent charge. They referred me to their district manager, Todd Taylor. He told me that he would be working with a senior engineer and that there was “some confusion, it seems, with what you asked about being present because of the similar folder names in pictures. If we cannot get this data for you in the next few days I will be in touch to discuss a refund”. (Confusion because they lied about the files that were recovered) On 7.14.17 I received an email stating that no refund would be issued because they did what they said they’d do and I shouldn’t have paid before taking time to look over the list (I literally asked them specifically about the documents I needed and they rushed me into paying before I could do extra research, and then they ignored me and told me they were working on it so long that I couldn’t even report it to my credit card as fraud any longer!!). I responded with the above stated comments. He told me “I’m satisfied that we made every good-faith effort possible to let you know what data was recoverable…these files were shown to you in the file list, in full” (email 7.14.17). I even told him that I couldn’t find the files I needed and when I asked the rep about it, he assured me that they were all there (20,000, 98% recovery). He stated that “if you had doubts about what was recovered it was up to you to tell us at that time, so we could have done the additional work necessary to see if that data was there before you made payment. We were transparent at every stage of this process.”

(Email 7.14.17). I DID have doubts and asked about them, they reassured me and then pressured me to pay right away! Upon the files that were recovered (almost all from 2012-2014, which have no value), many are corrupt and won’t open. I even offered to receive a partial refund because I did receive some files back; they stated that that was not an option. I asked to have them return my hard drive so that someone else could look at it and they sent it back to me with missing/broken pieces. I tried to post a review for their business online and they disputed it and removed it from the website due to the fact that I “got what I asked for”. When you go online to look up their reviews (which I did before I used them, although I should have done better research in hindsight), Trust Pilot puts them at a “great, 4 star” status. They have a 7.6 trust score review (there is no way this is accurate as I've already had them remove one of my reviews) I never would have thought to check BBB to see their awful reviews there, especially when their initial quote was so affordable and they made it seem like they did perfect work.

I sent them my hard drive they said it would cost 200 dollars to fix then say 1500 so I told them nevermind just send it back and this has been awhile now, my son has been calling them everyone gives him a different answer ,so I called them a few days ago and I talked to some guy he said it was shipped out and I should receive it this week I asked for the tracking number he said there was none because it was through the post office, and I told him it don't matter you still get a tracking number anyways, I said let me just be blunt with you are you even sending it back at all the guy said yes I would receive it, well my son calls today and spoke to some lady and she said it was not sent out yet that it would be sent out tomorrow and I would get it in 2 to 3 weeks, I think this is a shady company and I don't recommend anyone to use this place and if i don't receive my hard drive back very soon I am contacting an attorney because I took pictures of the hard drive before it was sent in to them and I have all the info on the hard drive I will do whatever I have to, to the fullest extent of the law because I can't stand scammers I have things on there that i have collected over the years and pictures of my parents who are no longer with me they passed away in 2008 I had scanned the original pictures I did have of them onto my computer and I thank God I did because i lost the original ones in a tragic accident so those are the only ones I have left so I will for sure pursue this to the fullest extent of the law if i do not receive the hard drive and they already told me that it can be recovered so when and if I get it ,the stuff better be able to be recovered because they already told me it was recoverable I have that in a email so, I wouldn't recommend using this company for anything and if u already have and are having the same problems i am contact attorney

I have a 2001-era Compact Flash for camera (64MB). It is solid state; that is, it's a digital chip. I asked Fields Data Recovery to give me an estimate because the young women who spoke on the phone said it was probably going to be close to $99...the minimum. I sent it to them. And waited. And waited. Finally, I paste the email conversation with Eric Keck, the account rep: Just touching base with you about the drive you have with us. Just seeing if you have decided what you wanted to do with your drive. Touch base with me when you get a chance.

Thanks! You charging over $800 for the retrieval would be way too much by a factor of 10 even if I had plenty of disposable income. It's an insult to the intelligence of any rational human being after you spent (what? an hour?) that little time and attention on it. It probably took your bench tech one run through what is likely a standard software to retrieve less than 64MB of 2001 compact flash data. We don't have bench tech's working here. We have data recovery specialist. I'm not sure on the exact amount of time spent on your drive, but even a head swap takes less than an hour, and you probably know the going rate for one of those. That aside, would you like me to send you back your drive? Thanks! Eric Keck

In March 2016 my computer hard drive crashed on my Mac Computer. Not being a novice at computers I took it too the Apple store where they had to delete my hard drive and basically restart my computer as a new computer. Unfortunately the lesson I learned was to always always backup files. I had backups of my photos... but I did not have a back up file of all my documents saved to my Apple email.

That said, I quickly realized I had a lot of needed data so I looked around for data recovery resources. I came across, Field's and liked that they had a central office in St.Louis and this is where I live. This would save me at least 2 days shipping. I porceeded and spoke with Josh Carter, who was handling my case. The site promises a 48 hour turn around so when I didn't hear back in 72 i called and was assured they were working on my files. I never heard from them except when I was inquiring or when they wanted payment.

Approximately, 5 days later I receive an email and phone call from Josh stating the engineers had found everything. I asked more about specific files so he agreed to send me a screen shot. The files were very jumbled and I did not see what I needed so I sent Josh a follow telling him I could not see my data. He again assurred me it was there and told me where to look. I did not see it but again contributed it to not being able to read the files on my iphone.

I explained we were on vacation and he again assured me tha my files were there. I sent an email again asking for specific files. He stated, "the computer engineers are sure your files are there." I provided a cc number and he put the charge through and sent my computer back.

When I got it home I tried to get the files, but could not find them. I called Josh and told him. He was going to have the engineer call me. I never heard back. I called 4 times and received no return calls as promissd. Finally, I was able to speak with Dan Rapp, branch manager. He was very short and told me that they do not give refunds. I read him emails and offered to send him the correspondance, but he refused. I asked him 4 times to give me his managers name.

He did not want to give me the name and told me that the answer would be the same. He gave me the name Todd Taylor. When I ask to speak with Todd, I was told he was busy? I then asked to be transfered to Todd's voicemail. I left a message on Todd's voice mail today 09/02/2016. It has taken me over 2 months to just get in touch with someone and after doing some research I came across this site and see that I am not alone in being scammed by this company.

They got me

I fell for their scam. They strung me along for two months with false hope and promises. No one would ever return my calls. When I pushed to talk to someone I received the same BS answer for 2 weeks straight - "your hard drive is being imaged". After all that time and money I received a cold form letter explaining to me that my recovery failed. Don't make the mistake I made. Believe all of the negative feedback regarding this company.
