PHILADELPHIA – A Philadelphia man claims he was falsely arrested and imprisoned after he challenged the amount of change he received from a Dollar General store cashier, and the cashier used a racial epithet against him before calling the police and instigating the false arrest. On March 28, Donald Braswell of Philadelphia filed suit in the Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas versus Melody Wollard and Dollar General, both of Bensalem, and Dollar General Corporation of Goodlettsville, Tenn. On Feb. 21, 2017, Braswell says he was shopping at the Dollar General store on Street Road in Bensalem and after picking up a bag of cat food, went to the cashier, defendant Wollard, and gave her a $20 bill to pay for the cat food. The bag of cat food cost $6.99 and thus, Braswell states he was due change of $13.01.

However, Braswell says Wollard gave him $3.01 worth of change, instead of the correct amount of $13.01, that he noticed the error when walking out of the store, then walked back to Wollard to explain the error. In response, Wollard claimed Braswell only handed her a $10 bill instead of the $20 bill he had actually given her, but the plaintiff believes Wollard knew she was given a $20 bill and deliberately shorted Braswell on the change. Wollard eventually agreed to go to the store’s office to check the surveillance video of the purchase and after doing so, again claimed Braswell had only given her a $10 bill, even though the video showed Braswell handed Wollard a $20 bill. At that point, Braswell called the police and asked Wollard if he could view the video himself.

Upon doing so, Braswell says he noticed the money he gave Wollard was in fact a $20 bill and remarked to the cashier, "You don’t see that?” The suit says Wollard held the $10 bill change due to Braswell, an African-American, in her hand and used a racial epithet, allegedly stating, "N–er, I’m not giving you back nothing”, at which time Braswell took his $10 bill change and the cat food he bought, and walked out of the store. After leaving Dollar General, Wollard called the police and is said to have falsely claimed Braswell had robbed her and took $10 that belonged to the store from the cash register, even though neither of those facts were true. As a result, Braswell was arrested and charged with robbery and theft. Due to the false arrest, Braswell was unable to make bail and was incarcerated for four and a half months, losing a job he was about to obtain with Greyhound Bus Company and lost his Cadillac Escalade, because of missing five payments on the vehicle while in custody.

"Based on information received, plaintiff believes and therefore avers that defendants – Melody Wollard – had a history of shortchanging customers and, consequently, believes and avers that the shortchanging of plaintiff by defendant was intentional. The above-described actions of defendants constitute false arrest, false imprisonment, malicious prosecution and defamation. On June 23, 2017, the District Attorney – having reviewed the evidence and the video of the incident – withdrew all charges against plaintiff,” the suit says. The plaintiff is seeking compensatory and punitive damages, jointly and severally, in an amount in excess of $50,000, plus all reasonable costs and fees the Court may permit. The plaintiff is represented by Martin Stanshine of Stanshine & Sigal, in Philadelphia. Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas case 180303384

On September 30 I purchased a Verizon pre paid cell phone plus minutes to set the phone up with. prior to purchasing the phone I had asked were they able to get signal and use the Verizon phone in this area. Clerk had said yes, but not at the lake. Not a problem for me, I don't live near the lake.

As said bought the phone brought it home charged it up and followed the prompts to set phone up. Went through the steps and the phone said that is could not be registered and gave an 800 number to call. I went on line to vzw.com/activate and tried to enter it that way, ploblem the system is only set up to buy into a contract amount, and I had already purchased the mins. Also I DO NOT use credit cards.

So i went back to the phone, tried to set it up again, another fail. I called the 800 number and it was NOT Verizon, BUT Bluegrass cellular! They had no clue as to why a Verizon phone was giving out their number, other than maybe a tower was picking it up. The Bluegrass person was very nice and connected me to Verizon, which was a joke, as she said I should have known and that this number was NOT for prepaid phones, only contract phones. She then gave me a number to call for prepaid phones, I was not able to talk with anyone. Just an automated system.

At this point I was nOT able to set phone up and had NOT scratched the back of the phone minutes off. I returned to the store and told them the story, how the phone was not able to be set up, and that the minutes were not used or the code was not scratched off.

Manager told me she could refund the phone amount but not the minutes. I asked why?, when they were NOT used or scratch off. She said it is the stores policy. I asked why is this store selling phones and minutes to people that are unable to be set up? She said " it is what they send for them to stock" So now I ask can I at least have a store credit for the amount. NO she said! This is a huge win for Dollar General! A BIG RIP OFF!

So there you have it, a store that sell phones that can not be set up and they know this I'm sure. That store was able to make a cash sale and the product was not able to be used!

Also the clerk/manager kept my original recipt!

I went to Dollar General in Muscle Shoals Alabama to purchase soda they had on sale. I arrived early in morning on the first day of the sale.

They advertised six (6) brands of soda. They had one (1) and not a favorite brand (Dr. Pepper). I asked the employee about this and she had no idea why their store would only have one brand out of six advertised.

The store had plenty of other brands that were not on sale, so I can only assume they are using "Bait and Switch" tactics to get you into the store.

I contacted their corporate headquarters and they gave the same old song and dance about how their advertising says that not all items may not be at every store. Oh we value you as a customer, but there is nothing we can do....so sorry!!

But to have only one of six brands.....unbelievable.

Consumers beware, this is not a good company and they do not value you as a customer.

Feel wrongful Termination due to being told to clock out asap when closing, emptying money out of safe 3 min til close, Carrie was wrote up for same thing and Larry never made her sign hers....when taking lunch always interrupted, or not even get one which is against store policy, Carrie and Ashley talking about me amongst their selves and to customers stating false information, I had fallen and reported it and an email came down from higher management stating for Larry to look into it that I caused it and reprimand me, which I did not cause, then I got sick for a week with pneumonia, but was told I had to come work which made my sickness worse having to go to the ER...

I walk into this dollar general store to purchase a item. I seen that the item was attached to something so I asked for assistance. The person who I went to was Ryan. After asking for his assistance instead of asking me about the particular item I needed he immediately walked over to the cigarettes.. I simply asked him why he went to the cigarettes . He told me because that is what is locked. Eventually I showed him what I needed instead of where he went. Ryan reacted in a frustrated manner yet managed to complete the purchase or transaction. Before leaving I asked for this worker's name. He told me it was Ryan. Then he immediately asked for my name. As a customer why would I have to provide him my name just to get his? He is a worker that serves the public. The public should be entitled to any workers name giving the service. Ok well after leaving I forgot that my item needed some batteries. After walking back into the store Ryan told me "Sir you are not allowed to shop in this store" in other words denied further service. I felt that his actions was discriminatory. My only reply was that I would be filing a charge. I did not yell, destroy property, use vulgarity, threaten, or sexually harass any employee or customer there. I only go there to purchase what I need and nothing else that would waste my time ok. Bottom line is Ryan being unethical and wrong in his decision to deny me any further service. This guy should be terminated.
