CUNA Mutual Group Reviews

My husbnd took his life 5 years ago. Had a account with Navy federal credit union and had premuims for 14 years on a accidental life insurance policy. Hired an attorney to see if me and daughter were entitled to anything but by death being he took own life then said was not paying us a dime, But during one of phone calls to a supervisor stated we were entitled to 2000 anyway but we never received one red cent. So much for life insurabce policies.

Cuna sent me a letter saying that I had to decide whether to renew my GMAB rider before I reach the expiration date of May 4th. I decided not to renew it and transferred the money 2 weeks before May 4th.

Then they said they were going to keep $2700 because I should have waited until after May 4th. Total misleading company. Don’t do business with them

CUNA Mutual Insurance company just doubled my premium for Long Term Care (LTC); signing a policy with them was the worst decision of my life. I purchased this policy 11 years ago; it was expensive, but the cost was acceptable when measured against the potential expense of medical care for my wife and I. But by doubling premiums, the costs now are ridiculous in respect to the benefit. Over a long lifetime, we would pay them over $200,000 – more than we will pay for health care insurance -- and money that we will not get back should we not use it. We would have been far better off simply investing our premium elsewhere and paying potential LTC costs from money that is actually ours.

CUNA justified this eruption in policies as if they were shocked at how expensive medical care had become. The fear of which was the reason why I bought LTC insurance to start with! Apparently, the shock of CUNA’s poor business decision was sufficient to cause them to cease selling any more LTC insurance. Which now means they have no new contribution coming in, and that all expenses have to be met from existing policies. Which undoubtedly also means that they will increase our rates again and again. This is how a Ponzi-scheme ends badly – when there are no longer fools and patsies funding the lucky few at the top.

Anticipating the increases that are undoubtedly coming, I tried to escape from CUNA. I appealed their decision and asked for options to convert the money paid thus far into some form of pre-paid insurance; or simply get my money back in order to start over with another company; or even pay a surrender charge to leave. But I was denied everything. Had they increased my premium by a little bit more, then they would have triggered a pre-paid policy exit option. But they ONLY increased our rates by 99.5%.

Thus trapping us so that we have to swallow the increase tsunami, or gut the policies to lower the cost, or just walk away and forfeit the 25K paid over the past 11 years. It is my belief that CUNA knowingly and deliberately is exploiting us to balance the books on their incompetent LTC decisions. CUNA is simply transferring all of the cost and risk to us in order to save themselves from their poor business calculations. LTC insurance was supposed to have minimize my financial risks. But picking CUNA has been the worst decision of my life and jeopardizes the finances that I had hoped to protect.

So I am considering leaving now, even if it means forfeiting the 25K I have invested in LTC. Painful as this will be, it is likely a better choice than throwing good money after bad, risking additional increases that will certainly come, and investing more into a company that clearly cares nothing for me. I feel like I’m being robbed.

My late mother had Life insurance through this company and passed. That in and of itself is hard enough to accept and deal with. But then to collect on the claim of insurance which was paid for in good faith from this company, "Endorsed" by her Credit Union and payments automatically taken from her accout for the premiums has proven to be a Nightmare. 1st you call in the claim, they then send you medical documentation that would make even the most difficult doctors office visit look like a walk in the park that you must fill out and return to them along with death certificates.

There done...No wait...still not enough,

They then in turn, contact your late mothers doctors and ask them to verifiy all of the documentation that they made you and your late mother submit to them before they collected her money for however many years.....And then we all wait yet some more. This whole process can take weeks and weeks.

And here's the real kicker: "If Cuna doesn't like something the doctor says or believes it is in contrast to your answers on your Life Insurance Policy, they will simply pay back to you the premiums paid in on the policy instead of the Face Amount of the Policy"!

I don't know if you have ever buryed anyone, but the funeral home usually wants their money now or Mom's going in a pinebox. They do not want to hear "I trying to get the insurance company to paid for the Life Insurance Policy that Mom had".

Word to the wise or even to the ones of us who didn't know any better. STOP GIVING YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY TO COMPANIES LIKE CUNA.

Shop around, ask questions and make sure your loved ones will not be left holding the bag to go with the tears. Death brings out all kinds of Vultures...and all of them have their hands in your pockets or in the belongings of your loved one who you just lost. So Sad!!!!!!

This company started charging my card 100's more than what my normail bill has always been. They did not notify me at all in any form, or try to contact me about changes or increasing the charge. I called to see why, the agent was rude, i asked for the manager, she was rude, i asked for her manager who was also rude. The last manager said they will not refund me any of the amount. i canceled my policy the same day i was charged and they said they still cannot give me a full refund. and my card hadn't been charged. i checked my bank account and they charged anyways. i called back and they acted like i didn't even have an account, then told me i didn't cancel my policy and would be charged.
