Charter Communications, Inc. Reviews

  • Sep 4, 2023

We were billed $114.00 for a month of service after we turned in all equipment and terminated services with Spectrum. Thus, we've been fraudulently charged for a month of services we never received. I've disputed this account several times over Credit Karma and with various collection agencies employed by Charter Communications. Charter Communications apparently verifies the billing is valid after every dispute and we are notified of the collection process. Charter Communications has a long track record of fraudulent and predatory billing practices, as demonstrated by a brief search of complaints on the Better Business Bureau website.

I Notified Spectrum Business that I was discontinuing their services. First customer representative refused to disconnect services unless I gave her a reason. I explained that I did not have to give her a reason, and she continued to argue with me until I was forced to hang up.

I called back and spoke to a different person, and explained that I wanted to discontinue my service, and what had happened during my first attempt to do this. She assured me I did not require a reason to disconnect my service and eventually she said it was done.

When I asked about the final billing, which appeared to be charging me for an additional month, she explained that was policy, even though I would not be using their service anymore. There was also an additional charge of more than $70.00 on my account page, which she was unable to explain, and told me not to worry about it.

After three fraudulent overcharges some years ago I stopped autopay and went so far as to change banks as Charter/Spectrum has a reputation for aggressive methods of billing fraud.

I received my latest bill on 7/11, false dated to 7/1 and due on 7/15. The three day payment window is one method they use to intimidate customers toward autopay. So I had my lawn man (I'm bed-bound) take the check and payment stub to the Charter store and drop it off.

The next day I get an email thanking me for changing my account billing method. They don't answer the phone so I emailed them and told them to change it back. They did not. They changed me to autopay with no verbal or written consent. I have not been under contract to Charter for years. And no, I am not in default and never have been.

My bank says this scam is now legal due to some new banking laws. Once you write a check to a service provider that gives them perpetual access to your money. So now I have to change banks again. And I have to pay Charter by cash to prevent them from getting my bank account numbers and doing it again. There are no competitors in this area so I am stuck with them or use a Verizon hotspot with poor tower availability.

Paid for services from July 24th through August 16th. Services were not provided from July 24th through August 16th. Company says they are a subscription service and do not prorate bills but they did not provide services that were paid for. That is fraud and theft.

$462 turned over to collection agency. Credit score drops 89 points. When I spoke with Charter customer service, all three of my previous Charter (Spectrum) account show zero balance.

I've now spent multiple hours trying to sort this out. Someone from Charter Communication fraud is to vall me; however, that has not yet happened.

I have never had an account with 11 Charter Communications or any other cable, internet or communication service. My credit report says this debt was turned over to Diversified Consultants, Inc. July 2018.

Since I've lived here for 14 years, I'm sure this wasn't an old debt from the previous tenant. This is impacting my ability to purchase this home.

  • Jun 20, 2018

I have a negative mark on my credit score of $121. I have paid off all my debt and I never received a disconnection notice or late payment bill or even and overdue bill from them.

  • Jun 5, 2018

I have a negative mark on my credit score of $382. I have paid off all my debt and I never received a disconnection notice or late payment bill or even and overdue bill from them.

  • Jun 3, 2018

They charged my credit with $189.00 For my cable, internet and phone service saying not paid. If that is the case then I should not still have my cable, internet or phone service bc they shut everything off when u fall behind on ur bill. This is a scam to ruine pols credit and try to get money. And they reported this December 26th 2017 .

  • Jun 2, 2018

11 charter communications placed a debt on my credit report that i do not owe. Charging me for service i did not have.

A bogus charge of $569 appeared on my Transunion report. It comes up under my car loan. My car loan is in good standing I DO NOT KNOW WHO 11 CHARTER COMMUNICATIONS IS.

This has got to be the worst service experience I have ever encountered with a company.

First: We are required to reboot our receiver almost daily to be able to use the DVR functions. This means unplugging the receiver then plugging it back in and waiting for the receiver to finally reboot. Sometimes that doesn't work and we have to call customer service to send a refresh signal to the box. When contacting Customer Service, their response is, "This is a problem we are aware of and we have hired a team of engineers to help find a solution." THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING OVER A YEAR!!!

Second: Sometimes, when watching programming, the receiver just randomly goes into a reboot sequence. Sometimes this happens once, sometimes this starts a loop. Both ways, it usually happens at a critical part of the programming.

Third: Random service upgrades. A couple times, I have received random service upgrades which were never authorized. I have pins set on each box and controls which require the pin to be entered before any receiver purchases. Each time, they claim this came from a receiver. The latest one included a Latino Package upgrade and no one in my house speaks Spanish. Again, they gave me the runaround. They said that maybe someone else had access. EVERYONE WAS UPSTAIRS ASLEEP WHEN THE SO CALLED REQUEST WAS MADE!!!

Finally, I have found bill increases that I was not notified about. Spectrum is going to begin charging me more for DVR service that does not work as advertised. This in itself is criminal in my opinion. When I upgraded my service a couple of weeks ago, they informed me that my bill would only increase twenty dollars. Now I have found out that it will increase more than forty six dollars.

This companies incompetence, deception, and inability to fully address issues is truly disappointing and should not be allowed to conduct business without resolving the issues.

  • Mar 23, 2018

I had called the company to see if our area was serviceable they told me yes. After hearing their prices i declined. 2 months later I was checking my credit report and I found that they placed a bill for service i never had in collections. Upon calling the company I was informed that Spectrum was NOT serviceable in my area. SO Tell Me How I was charged for service??? They are scammers and liars!!!!!

  • Mar 22, 2018

Has anyone noticed that if you turn your TV off at night on a certain channel that when you turn your TV back on in the morning that channel has been CHANGED to spectrum info commerical for the change to digal channele's. I dont remember giving anyone the right to change any channel on my TV or to use there cable box to change my channele's on my TV.

This a invasion of my rights, when Spectrum was asked about this I was told that there is nothing they can do and everybody had this done to them so that they would know about the change to digal TV. They suggest that I have change my settings and program my TV for favorite settings I dont feel that I should have to change my settings for Spectrum Cable.

*They said I had there services in 2016, my husband died in 2013 and I've been living with my brother in law and sister everything has been in there name including my cell phone till 2017 when I bought my car and paid for it in cash and put it in my name. Before 2013 everything was in my husband's name all the way back to 2006 when I lived in Kentucky.*

The 332.00 that 11 charter communications has on my credit is fraud

  • Mar 17, 2018

I've never had an account with them at any point in time, I'am a victim of Identity Theft and have placed fraud alerts on my credit profiles.

  • Mar 15, 2018

I received a notice today that they reported a 700$+ bill on my credit. I've never had an account with them ever! My husband currently has an account with Spectrum who just bought out Time Warner and we've had this account for years. This is a fraud collection account!

  • Feb 28, 2018

I have lived in my apartment for almost 4 years and my cable / internet is included in my rent - which is Direct TV. Charter is reporting I had an account opened in 2015 and it is in collections. Why would I have put service in my name when I already have Direct TV, which is INCLUDED in my rent?

I was not really surprised to see that I am not the first this has happened to. I would like to have it removed from my credit report, because it is hurting my score and it is NOT my account.

  • Aug 28, 2017

I have proved and faxed and gotten the surety that a cable collection would be taken off of my credit reports by Charter after proving that I was only 9 years old or so when I was supposedly having an account with Charter and here 6 months later it is still on my credit report, I even sent my birth certificate to them. It saddens me to have to do so much unnecessary inquiries for them to get this very simple thing done but nope, here I am having to write this so that everybody should be aware of this hold back of Charters fraud dept.by being so lazy or uncaring of a younger, new person trying to start their life and career, it shouldn't be like this, I have so much work to do in school already so adding the dispute with Charter that I DID NOT have an account when I was nine, the thing of it is that Charter has committed a crime allowing my social security number to be used at all at the age nine but they allowed it and are probably still letting it happen to this day . Their is a law that will be enforced against them if they don't take this off of my credit reports immediately, I've done everything to resolve and keep this civil. ANYWAY IF THIS HAPPENS TO YOU YOU CAN SURELY SUE THEM FOR ALLOWING A CHILD'S SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER TO BE USED, THEY ARE AUTOMATICALLY ACCOMPLISHES IN THE CRIME AND SHALL BE HUGELY LIABLE.

Performed several surveys for about a week and after that several days later was sent to my home by Priority Mail a single check for the amount of $2,950. 00. I went to the bank to find the legitimacy of the check because I was very suspicious being that I did not do very much work to get such a sizable check. Of course the check was fraudulent in which the banker confiscated the hard copy of check.

On February 23rd, I called the Charter Spectrum customer service number to get a quote as a new customer for new service.

The person I talked to gave me a good offer $54.98 for home phone and Internet. He said my Internet speed would be 4.0 (THIS WAS A LIE)I said “I heard that I can keep my same number” and he said “You will have your same number as soon as your new service is installed” (THIS WAS A LIE))

I also said that I don’t want to pay for installation and he said “No problem. I am going to give you the credit for that.” (THIS WAS A LIE)

I said “I don’t want to pay for set up either” and he said “There is no set up fee.” (THIS WAS A LIE)

I realized that the deal I was getting was too good to be true so I called Charter Spectrum customer service. We realized that I was not being set up for wireless so we added that service. I told that girl that the first man said I would not be charged a setup fee and she said that I was being charged a setup fee. Then she said she would take that fee off (THIS DID NOT HAPPEN)

A week later, on March 1st, the equipment was installed. The service man said “Here is your new number” and I said “No. My old number is being ported over.” He said “I don’t know anything about that.” So I tried my phone and it had not been ported. I called Charter Spectrum customer service and she said “I see that you ordered service in a store.” And I said that I didn’t know what he was talking about. I used the number from the Charter Spectrum website. Then he said “You must have got that number off of a flyer or something” And I repeated that I got the number from the Charter Spectrum website. Then she told me that my number would be ported within 24 hours (THIS DID NOT HAPPEN)

I called the next day and was told AGAIN: “I see that you ordered service in a store.” And I said that I didn’t know what he was talking about. I used the number from the Charter Spectrum website.” Then he said “I don’t know what happened. This port order was not done correctly. I will submit this today” (THIS DID NOT HAPPEN)

I tried using Charter Spectrum CHAT on line so that I could make a copy of what was said (and I have the copy)I told “Kandice F” that I was promised Internet speed of 4.0 but I am only getting 2.5 and she started to double talk me. I gave up and said that my phone number had not been ported over like I was promised and “Kandice F” said I needed to “contact our service delivery department” and gave me this number: 1-855-455-7506 and then she hung up on me.

I tried the number 1-855-455-7506 and it was for vacation sales company. I tried again, thinking I had dialed wrong and then I found out that Kandice F did this deliberately. I know this because the Charter Spectrum customer service CHAT people do not have a number for the service delivery department.

I tried again with Charter Spectrum customer service CHAT and got “Brandon H”. He said he could not help me and he said he does not have a number for the service delivery department. He gave me the number for Charter Spectrum customer service: 1-855-757-7328.

Then I looked at my bill on line. I was being charged for installation and set up! I called Charter Spectrum customer service and she said that no one is allowed to offer free installation! So now they are refusing to take responsibility for their employees actions. I guess the employee can just promise you anything to get your business and then Charter Spectrum customer service just says “Too bad. They aren’t authorized to promise you that.”

I waited two more days and called Charter Spectrum customer service. I was told that the port order was still not completed correctly and that I would have to call and order a porting. I said that this was not my job to do. After much arguing, he said he would do the port order and it would take effect in 2 days (THIS WAS A LIE)

I called Charter Spectrum customer service again and was told AGAIN that the port order was still not completed correctly. I said that I did not want that same answer. I said that I wanted something done. The phone call lasted a very long time and I was placed on hold a very long time. Then he came back on the line and said that “AT&T said it would be March 9th” when my number was ported.

Today is March 9th and my number is not ported so I called Charter Spectrum customer service. He told me the port order was cancelled and it was my fault for cancelling AT&T before the port was done. No one ever said to not cancel my AT&T (or I would not have done it. Charter Spectrum customer service also said that I could not have the number unless I called AT&T and signed up for AT&T again, got my number back, requested that the number be ported to Charter Spectrum, and then re-cancel the AT&T.

I called AT&T customer service and I was told that they (AT&T) never received a port request (from Charter Spectrum) and it is NEVER the customer’s fault if a port is not done, and a port-over never takes more than 24 hours.

Called Specturm cable because they took over time warner cable. Was trying to get cheaper package than what we had. Wa told "we don't have any Cheeper packages but for 5.00 dollars more a month you can have he same service you have now plus HBO, Cinemax and higher internet. We said we would think about it and since we had been wi them for over 10 years we decided to go ahead and upgrade. Was told to turn old boxes in and everything would be good to to go. Go to turn boxes in and the local store said, you don't have to turn your boxes in, they are telling everyone that but it's not true. Ok, no big deal I guess. Get home and set up new cable boxes and notice abou 10 channels that we always watch are missing.

Call Spectrum and are told, oh you are signed up for he silver package, if you want all the channels you high to upgrade to the gold package, which is 20 dollars more a month. When we tell them that we were told nothing would change except adding HBO, Cinemax and upgraded internet we're told, oh I'm sorry you were misinformed but to get those channels you have to upgrade to the gold package. When I said just give me the old package I had back they told me oh, I'm sorry that was a time warner package and it does not exist any longer. So, to get what I originally had I gave to pay over 200 dollars a month and have channels I don't even want or use. It's a ripoff. If you gave a package you like from time warner and told to upgrade for only a little more money a month, don't believe it. It's a scam.

I dont know where to start. I have charter internet and have for about 2 years. I called to bundle my TV with them to see if I could save some money. After talking to their sales rep, I was told that I would get all of these channels, a home phone (which we have never had. We like most, just rely on our cell phones), as well we would get upgraded to the 100 mb download speed. So I went ahead and canceled my service with Dish Network. When the service guy got to my house, he installed everything for the TV. But he had no record of any internet speed upgrade. He and I called the service department, and they said that they could not and would not upgrade my internet service unless I paid an additional $60 per month.

They admitted that their sales rep did promise the upgrade, but that they would not honor it because she was wrong. My business is custom software and online services.

So a fast internet is very important to me. But Charter was completely unwilling to work with me or take any actions to fix their own error. I kept asking for the next level up representative, and after talking to 5 different people, I got nothing but the feeling that they could care less if I just took a hike. And the fact that I was only saving a cost of about 10 dollars per month, but getting a service that has a completely antiquated look and feel when it comes to their TV software, I was happy to say, "just take this crap away".

Charters DVR box is HUGE. It is also out of date, and their user interface is complete junk and hard to figure out. I now have to call Dish Network back and ask them to come out and re-hook up their equipment. So in addition to the hassle of all of this and now multiple days of m y schedule tied up, I have to pay Dish Network a service fee to reconnect something that was already hooked up and fine until charter deconstructed everything. I would strongly suggest staying away from Charter as a whole. If you are looking for a company that focuses on good customer service, then I would go anywhere else. Anything has to be better.

I work from home and the only reason I used this service is because employers want SpeedTest results that show upload and downloads that Verizon does not offer in the area I live in.

I got a bad taste in my mouth from Charter three years ago when I first moved to Suffolk. I had their service for less than a week before I went back to Verizon. Although it took months for them to send my a correct final bill, they sent my account to collections on an unpaid "projected" balance.

Last winter I was forced to go back to them for service because of the speed test requirement and again their collections policies are more than absurd. I was initally advised that their system showed that I had service at my address. Acutally my neighbor signed up for service with them weeks before but they put my address in their system in error which meant I could not get service with them until they cleared that matter up.

I've gotten collection calls for being two days late on one months service, I've gotten collection calls for having a zero balance due and I've gotten calls asking me to call when there is no problem and no one can tell me why I got a call. All these calls came to my cell phone which is illegal by the way and I asked them repeatedly to stop calling me on my cell phone.

Last week on 9/8/16 I got a collection call on my house phone that I was two payments behind, I was advised via their automated service, that I could pay the oldest balance and keep my service on. I chose to speak with a live representative. This rep refused to discuss me making a payment because I could not confirm my phone number. I gave my physical address, mailing address, my name I offered the account number from the billing statement but she refused. I only have a phone because it's required. I don't use my house phone for personal reasons and I don't know my phone number. Even though my service was in jeapardy of being disconnected, this rep could not have cared less. I advised her that I would just mail in the payment and I should be receive before the 13th, the deadline I was given was 9/12.

My service as turned off on 9/13 for being one payment late. I called in and spoke with a supervisor who informed me that if my service had been mailed in using one of their envelopes they could track it. I advised her that there was no barcode on the envelope just as I advised the inital rep that my phone number was not on the collection notice that I received. They didn't care one bit to confirm anything I said. These people treat you as if you're stupid or worse a liar.

My shift didn't start until well after 2pm and I was more than sure that my payment would finally post and I could go on with my life. Well 3pm came and went and no service. I called in and and advised them that I work from home and as we spoke I have a no call no show because I couldn't call in. A no call no show is considered job abandonment. Charter could not have cared less. I spoke to another supervisor and asked for confirmation that my service had been interrupted. I was advised by this guy that I should send in my bank statement, or all the bills they sent to me regarding my service being interrupted if I wanted to proof that my service was interrupted.

Right now as I'm typing this statement my service is back on and this is the same day as my no call no show but my shift is over. There is no need to call then attendance line, there is no need to call or email my supervisor. I didn't report to work and I did not call in.

Do I hold Charter responsible for my cell phone company abruptly advising me that they no longer service 2g phones and cutting off my service without advanced warning, no. Do I hold Charter Communications responsible for my not being able to get to my post office box regularly to check my mail, no. I do however hold Charter Communications responsible for multiple unexplained shutdowns that they are held unaccountable for. I hold them accountable for uninformed, arrogant customer service team who doesn't understand their own verfication policy, who has never seen one of their own collection notices, who doesn't understand that all of their envelopes don't have a bar code and if they do they should give their customers the benefit of the doubt and keep their service on for at least a day if for no other reason than their uncertainty of whether the customer is lying to them.

I've had unexplained service interruptions, illegal, incorrect, nonsencical calls to my cell phone, I had slanderous reports to the credit bureaus about me and I'm still doing business with this monoply and have never made a public complaint but this is the worst company I've ever done business with. I remember when I initally asked for a quote for service and they informed me that they need my exact address in order to give me a quote. The area of Suffolk that I moved to is as close to destitute then I've ever seen in this state and I only lived on city away in Chesapeake. I've never seen so much depression and so many unemployed or under employed people in one place but the utilities increase regularly here and I see that Charter Communications, who have an office just miles from me, seem to be doing their part to add to the despair and destitution of the area they do business in and what I've been through with them is proof of that. I can only hope that none of the reps that work for charter in this area have share the sentiment that management seems to have.

Thank your for taking the time to read my rant and I hope more people sound off. Good night.

I ordered Charter cable and on the very first bill statment (october2015) there has been movie orderd that i never ordered nor my husband. We called that in...and lady from customer service said that she will take it off our bill and suggested to put 4digit lock on our remote. We did so. 2nd statemet comes in in November 2015 and this time two more movies have been orderd. We called again. Lady from customer service was very rude...basicly accusing us of skimming. We demended to set it up this way that in order to order any movies we gotta call. She confermed doin so but she never did. The next day November 22 2015 we called again. Customer service lady finally set that up. We thought everything is over now and we can enjoy our cable...but the 3rd bill statement came it in December 21 2015. Movie was ordered again. We called customer service . Somebody called in to order a movie along with another one that will b on my next statement...but somehow they do not have the phone number call came from nor the name of person calling. Which is completly redicilous. We changed phone number that is on our account...hoping that this will do. If not i have no choice but cancel cable or/and call the lawyer. I have been recording every single phone call to Charter.

Been a faithful customer of charter for five years.

I am disabled now with personal injury.

They have repeatedly charged my account falsely inventing scenarios that dont exist to argue their new onetime charges.

I have never been late on payments either.

Their service techs installed a faulty cable and for 7 months i was getting 2mbps when I was paying for 60mbps

it was finally fixed by a tech who saw a faulty cable powering weak voltages to their wifi modem and router.

i was charged and they refuse to credit me for 7 months of faulty service

they refuse to remove the tech charges

they invented ACTIVATION OF WIFI mania to charge me just to invent a new charge

they refuse to credit mybill

and thewy will invest and spend exhorbitant amounts of time harrassing and arguing their charges and its become a dumb slippery petty criminal organization that charges and steals from anyone for anythign they so choose to characterize

A charter cable salesman by the name of Eric Turner was going door to door in my complex selling Charter cable. He advertised the cable to be a 30 day free trial offer and once the 30 days were up, if Charter met your satisfaction, you would call Charter and let the company know you were choosing to keep the services. After deciding to continue services, you would then began Charter services and pay the following month for which ever package you had chosen. Two weeks into the "free trial" I received a bill, called Eric to get an understanding as to why we were receiving a bill already. Eric Turner told us it was normal just to keep a record of who was receiving the services and too ignore it. Once the 30 days were up, we called to continue with the services because we'd enjoyed them. Once I called we had a $218 charge! Charter said the charges were from two bill cycles. I've spoken to supervisors, the office, and tried calling Eric Turner who won't return ANY calls. They refuse to help me because they are saying that they can't honor such thing without Eric verifying that he'd said it. He tricked us and even though the services were disconnected 30 days from the start date, we are still being billed every month as if we have the services. They tricked ALOT of people living here and we are all infuriated! I have witnesses to his false advertisement and started a petition. I informed Eric from the beginning that I was in no place to take on another bill and verified multiple times that the services were free. He lied. Period.
