After our second bichon frise died at age 13, I shopped for a new bichon frise puppy and elected to purchase an alleged full blooded bichon frise from Caney Fork Kennels/Caney Fork Bichon. After approximately 2 weeks with the puppy, my nearly 20 years of experience around bichon frises indicated to me that our new puppy was not a full blooded bichon frise.

For the first time ever I elected to order a DNA test on the new puppy. I have owned dogs for fifty years and have never requested a DNA test. The DNA test came back indicating that our puppy was a 50-50 mix of bichon frise and HAVANESE. I delivered the DNA test to the owner of the kennel, Anita Phillips, and she agreed to enter into a settlement with us and pay us our money back in part. However, she delivered a ridiculous release for us to sign which, among other things, would have quieted us and prevented us from telling the world about this rip off artist.

After several months we have certainly fallen in love with our mixed breed mutt, but we know that being in our 60's now this will probably be our last dog and it is not at all the dog that we had hoped to take us out. Please do not purchase puppies from this kennel. If you decide to do so get a DNA test first and know what you are getting.

I would not buy any dog from this kennel without first obtaining a DNA test to ensure that you are getting the dog that you are told you are getting. The kennel’s breeding stock is defective.

Caney Fork Kennels took the position that a 50/50 mix still complies with the AKC breed standard for a bichon frise. That is ridiculous and even if accurate, if you are told you are buying a full blooded bichon frise it should not be 50% bichon frise and 50% HAVANESE regardless of the proprietary and ridiculous positions taken by the AKC and Caney Fork Kennels. We are entitled to get what we pay for.

Disappointing

We reached out to Anita about a new puppy for my parents, my mom has Alzheimer’s and this was a present to her for Christmas. We chose a pup and I asked about her availability to meet. She said she was open virtually anytime. I showed my father the pup and he said that’s for sure the one , can we go see it and pay the deposit. I said yes, so text Anita and asked if we could come at 400 pm. She said she wasn’t available and her next availability was the next day at 100 pm. I asked her if she could hold the dog until 100 pm the next day. She said for a non refundable 200.00 deposit. I said I didn’t think it was fair to have to give a non refundable deposit when I am willing to come now and your the one not available. I said my concern was, if we came to see the dog and their was an issue, I was basically married to having to purchase a dog from you or lose 200.00 and we knew she only had one the color my father wanted. She wrote back and said do you want the 100 pm appt. leading me to believe she was holding until we got there. We then shared our new puppy pic with all of our family, friends and Facebook. The next morning my father is ansy for 100 pm to arrive, we have the full payment in hand and Anita text me at 1000 am, the pup we wanted just sold, did I want a different dog and keep my 100 pm appt? I said I thought you were holding the dog for us, Anita said she felt I was trying to tell her how to run her business and basically sold the dog for spite to teach me a lesson. Then she wanted to fight back and forth on text and I ultimately had to block her to prevent further harassment. We did find a different breeder and saved Christmas no thanks to Anita. I don’t recommend her company or her pups.
