The many reasons why I would NEVER recommend shopping at Buyyourownmodem.com. I bought a modem from them in July 2020, it arrived with the wrong power cord, and it was a $90 mistake and a major headache to resolve it.

1. Terrible customer service: there’s no way to call a customer service line, but only communications via email, and they only respond once a day. Does not respond to specific email questions / concerns but only repeats what’s on the website, or tells you that it’s your fault (e.g. “Very sorry to hear that you were not able to read the items description page upon checkout as it does clearly state that the item is listed to be in refurbished condition and even specifically states each and every accessory that would be included.”)

2. Item sent was faulty and did not function as advertised. The power cord sent with the item was not intended for this item. The peg was the wrong size and it hung from the router. It would have to be taped to stay securely and keep the power on.

3. Item sent was incomplete – it was NOT sent with every item listed (cords were missing)

4. Late delivery – paid ($9.95) for expedited delivery and it arrived a day late. It was never shipped within 24 hours, as advertised.

5. Fair returns are unlikely. After multiple emails explaining why I wanted to return the item, I only ever received the routine response that it will be tested upon return and IF in fact it’s faulty as I say, then I would be refunded minus the 20-30% restocking fee. Based on the communications, I did not trust that they would refund anything.

6. Packaging was horrible – the modem and power cord were jammed into a flat envelope cardboard mailer, with a tiny piece of bubble wrap and a crumpled plastic shopping bag. Furthermore it arrived from an individual in Glendale, AZ with an ebay mailer. So it appears that Buyyourownmodem may be buying things from ebay to send to customers.

7. They offer to pay $5 for a good review. No wonder there are any good reviews out there at all, as this company would only ever get a good review through bribery.

I ordered a modem for my DSL home network. The product I purchased was: Actiontec GT784WN DSL Modem/Wireless Router - 300 Mbps (TDS, Windstream, CenturyLink, Other DSL providers approved) for the amount of $109.94. When I received the modem it was in a used beat up box with a photocopy of instructions to follow using NETSCAPE (which does not exist any longer).

I was able to connect the modem myself with no issues and was able to get online for a full day. After that, the modem would not work and would go on and offline. I reached out to the company via email (they have no phone number or contact information listed other than email) and the person (gave no name) that I purchased the wrong modem. Which is not true. The modem I received was from the 2000's and was very old and antiquated.

The person told me to send back the modem and they will test it. I still have not received my refund. When I inquired about my refund they immediately refunded me $74.94 and told me it takes 30 days to refund (which was well over the 30 day mark). When I asked why I was not refunded the full amount they said that it is because I purchased the wrong modem. Which again, is not true. They tell you to read the terms before purchasing the product and it does indicate that a full refund will not be granted if you purchased the wrong modem.

I've read other reviews online and the same experience has happened to them. They profit off of selling antiquated, broken equipment to consumers and keep 30% of the sale when the product is sent back. This business is practicing a bait/switch technique and stealing money from consumers. Please look into this company and read reviews online. Yes, there are very good reviews online but my gut tells me they are fake. This company is definitely working a scam.

The person at the company is dismissive and accusatory. Reported to the FTC and as a small business owner - my lawyer agreed to look into this company's malpractice. Although doubtful anything will come out of it at least I can report them here and other sites. Buyer Beware.

Very happy

This modem is the exact same modem on the optimum website for half the price. It'll pay for itself in 5 months and it was so worth it. I wish I had purchased it sooner. You will have to call your cable company to register your and that takes 15 to 20 minutes. Don't delay purchase your modem!!!

Happy with what i received

Installed this in about 15 minutes and we get great signal all throughout our home (3000 sq ft, 3 levels). We have it on the main floor and reaches the basement with no problems, as well as the upstairs. Originally, I bought a ARRIS TG862G/CT (XB2) docsis 3 wireless gateway telephony modem and router (separately) and returned them for this all in one as it was less failure points and troubleshooting when that time comes.

The router was as advertised.

The router was as advertised. I received it promptly in excellent condition and installed it and it is is working flawlessly at half the cost if I would have purchased it directly from Verizon. Thanks for being there when I needed you.

I would stay away from this company. I ordered a modem and when it came in, it was clearly a used productNot even in an original box). Comcast would not activate the modem, saying this modem model was not intended for sale. The cable company basically said it was stolen. This company wants you to tell comcast that it's a different model. I didn't even hook it up after that. Read their return policy carefully!!!! i had to pay to ship the item back($17.15). It then took almost the 30 days for a refund to the credit card, minus the 20 to 30 percent restocking fee. It was a waste of time and money for me. Also...They offer a $5 dollar rebate for a good review...Maybe why there are so many good reviews on their website???

They've saved hundreds

Everyone in my family bought a modem from this site years ago and I was the only holdout. They've saved hundreds while I continued to pay; not anymore.Setup with the cable company was a breeze and now I'm saving too.

ARRIS Modem and Comcast.

We purchased our own modem and got it installed flawlessly with the exception of Comcast won't help to get the telephonic features working. I spent over 2 hours on the phone with them relentlessly trying to power up the modem but never fixing the telephonic features. We eventually dropped our land line. One less cost.

Purchased the Verizon FIOS Quantum Gateway G1100 AC1750

The router was as advertised. I received it promptly in excellent condition and installed it and it is is working flawlessly at half the cost if I would have purchased it directly from Verizon. Thanks for being there when I needed you.

Complete shady business. I bought a new modem and they turn around and send you a used one they claim to have it in the description and it's not. Then they make you spend 17 dollars to send the item back. Then try to steal your money again and not give you a full refund for stuff you didn't even order. It's a complete bait and switch. I didn't even order anything but the modem and they also sent me something else. I have filed with the better business bureau and my credit card. Omplete scammers! read the other reviews there is no phone number it's a complete scam.

The FiOS G-1100 router failed within one month, and no replacement

I bought a FiOS G-1100 router on the website, it stopped working within one month. I contacted to the customer service via email, and wanted to get a replacement, but they asked me to return the item. I spent over $16 for the return. It's bad!

Shady Business. Beware.

As an immediate afterthought of placing my order for a Verizon modem I googled buyyourownmodem.com. I then realized a mountain of complaints indicating this business to be a scam. The majority of complaints are that customers are receiving equipment that is either not what they ordered, is defective, or is owned by the internet provider such as Verizon or Comcast which was not returned to them. Given the absence of ant customer support phone number and the somewhat personal affront attitude of emails received, it is my guess that this is a sole proprietor business where the owner is able to source untested unreturned or abandoned equipment. That, combined with a slick website is what this business is all about. Realizing this, I immediately requested that the order be cancelled - within 5 minutes of its order. Hence, no fulfilment process was generated. After a day or so my order was cancelled. However a $10 cancelation fee was assessed against my credit card refund. As I discovered he does say so on his website but I didn't expect to be charged for this. I can understand a sort of restocking fee for a business, but in this case the order was immediately cancelled on grounds of the business reputation. Beware the predatory business behavior of buyyourownmodem.com. Only purchase a modem through a source such as Amazon or ebay where at least the seller has the accountability of buyer feedback.

The company's practices are very deceptive. I only came to outscam because i wanted to leave a review on their site and realilzed i couldn't..Go back and check for yourself. This is why they have so many 5 star reviews-because the get to pick the best of the lot and leave the rest of them out. I ordered a modem and assumed it was new like the other people said, but come to find out, it was used. Item was shipped in 3 different usps padded flat rate envelopes. They left me no choice but to come to this site. So my official review is this. 2 stars! minus two for not disclosing that the product is usedOr hiding it somwhere in very fine print) and minus 1 star for selling the used item at a price that's not that much cheaper than the manufacturer.

I ordered a modem and a router. set everything up with no instructions - although they sent a photocopy of generic instructions which ws very faded like the printer had no ink.

it worked for two days and then stopped working - indicating the cable was faulty. the person or email address i was communicating with, help@buyyourownmodem, provided no help and was very rude and obnoious stating that it frustrated him/her the following: There is nothing more frustrating then listen to someone complain who obviously doesn't have a

clue what they are doing based on the terms your using. Your absolutely

not going to get the phone number to the owner and again, here is your

return instructions to return the item. Please be sure to place a note

in the package detailing your reason for return and your welcome to

return the item to the return address below where it will be tested and

processed in accordance with our return policy that was presented and

accepted in order to complete checkout.

they offered no assistance and when i asked for the owners name and number they stated: our absolutely

not going to get the phone number to the owner

they sent me faulty equipment and they expect me to pay for shipping costs to send it back to them. i asked for a prepaid label and they stated to send it back myself.

Rude, obnoxius, customer service is horrible and now im stuck with no WiFi or cable

I purchused an Arris modem from this site. When I placed my order I was under the understanding that I was ordering a new modem, there was no indication otherwise on the page. The Modem that was sent to me was not only used but the warranty seal was broken on the product. The address listed on the website appears to come back to some residental neighborhood in Lehi, Utah and the phone number for "tech support" goes to some random computer store. There is no address listed on the site as to where to return the fraudulant item that they send out. Dont buy from this site.

I wanted to buy a telephone modem to avoid the ludicrous cable company rental fee. I found buyyourownmodem.com. Unfortunately, I didn't find the Rip Off Report until I looked for a place to post a review. I thought I was buying new. Imbedded on one line midway into their website is the word refurbished. Strike one, against them and against me for not seeing. When received the package and opened, it looked like it was packed by a 5 year old. The box was stuffed with rolled up newspaper, shreds from old FedEx boxes, and my favorite...a Priority Mail envelope with another customer's full name and address on the label. The modem was obviously used. The battery also used. I reread the buyyourownmodem site. That's when I found the reconditioned line. Okay, I needed to install so I bit the bullet and decided to push forward. I called my cable company to do the install. I was told the unit I had was only available through them for rental and not sold to the public. Hmmmm. Upon further review, I found a sheet with directions at the bottom of the shipping box I initially missed. The directions stated NOT to call the normal cable company number, but a specific number and if I reached a tech that said someone else on their side would need to help I should hang up and keep trying. It could take 4 or more times. Sketch much? Long story short, I had 2 cable company techs come to my house to try and make the modem work. Both said it was most likely fried. When I reached out to buyyourown modem, only a voicemail is available by phone. I initiated email correspondence. Over several back and forths, the person responding was, how shall I say, aggressive in his/her responses. I asked for any persons name at the company (good luck finding) and was told why would they give to me when all I would do is bother them and waste their time. Totally frustrated, I agreed to send back. I also asked that they cover return shipping costs since the unit never worked. They said they do in certain situations....yeah, like when a modem doesn't work? I was told I would need, in writing, something from the cable company tech that it didn't fire up. I got that, but since wasn't on their letterhead, was told no. A week after they received my return I still had not heard from them. I contacted my credit card company and filed a complaint.

I purchased a Verizon Actiontec Router. The title did not indicate that the item was anything but new. Way down on the 2nd page, after listing all of the features, they indicate that the item is refurbished. I realized this when I received the item & saw the condition. In addition, there is a picture of the item showing antennas, however, they did not list the antennas as being supplied & did not include them with the router. They allegedly sent me a set, which I newer received. I returned the item & they deducted a 30% restocking fee. Their policy is to refund 100% if the item is defective, 20--30% in all other cases. The item is defective in that it cannot provide WiFi service, without the antennas.

They use deceptive practices & are shady in their dealings.
