American Home Shield Reviews

  • Jun 23, 2016

On or about June 4, 2016 my air conditioner stopped pumping cool air. I contacted American Home Shield to get it fixed and they sent out t technician right away. I have no problem with the technician who was very prompt and knowledgable. As of June 22, 2016, my air conditioner is still not fixed and the contractor has not scheduled a repair date. The contractor is waiting for AHS to send them parts, but AHS is not doing this. AHS claimed that because I asked for a "cash out" that service was disrupted. When they first offered me this "cash out" garbage, I specifically asked them if it would disrupt service and they said that it would not. They lied. It did disrupt service. Not only that, but I directly revoked the "cash-out" request on Friday, June 17, 2016 and they did not revoke it and restart the service. They lied to me and told me that I revoked it on Tuesday, June 21, 2016. According to my records, I did not even speak to them on June 21. I had a doctor's appointment.

This situation is very serious and is a medical emergency, but AHS does not care. I have severe asthma and cannot survive without my A/C. It is now 85 degrees and humid both outside and inside my house. When I spoke to an AHS representative on June 22, they offered not assistance. In addition to their poor service, I have to wait from 20 to 40 minutes on hold before speaking to a reprentative.

When I spoke to the New Jersey consumer protection people, they told me that American Home Shield had 63 compaints filed against them in NJ alone. They referred me to the TN Consumer Protection Board I want my air conditioner fixed now and I want to recover dameges for medical expenses. Please have a attorney contact me to take the necessary action. Thank you.

American Home Shield (AHS) is a sham. The warranty only covers a very small percentage of the repair cost and the repair costs are so excessive from their network of contractors that you can get a lower cost repair, with less headache, simply by going direct to a contractor.

When you try and talk to someone at AHS, the hold time is always over 10 minutes. You can cancel but they won't issue any refund, even for payments made for future contract terms. That's where a credit card dispute comes in.

The company is an absolute sham. Very deceptive, shady business practices, zero customer service. Federal authorities need to investigate and will shut them down.

American Home Shield, thinks I should pay over 500.00 for an appliance they cover.

-This is the second time I have paid 75.00 and little to nothing was covered.

-They have very few, if any, repair people in the area.

-It often takes 1-2 weeks before they can locate someone to service me.

I have paid 50.00 a month for the last 10 years to American Home Shield and the last two times I needed service I paid the 75.00 fee and they would not cover the issue OR the "uncovered" is more than what they actually pay on their end. This instance, my hot water heater died. They will pay for the hot water heater (approx. 400.00) and the installation. I pay over 500.00 because the pipes don't merely screw in, it takes a modification of existing pipes. I requested 6 times to speak with a manager, and was not allowed to. Apparently the "break-down" of an appliance, will be covered ONLY if the event happens on the 5th Wednesday of the month on odd numbered years. AKA you are not covered.

In 2015, I had two HVAC Companies quote me on the cost of getting a cooling system installed. However, both refused to install or connect a cooling sytem on to the recently installed Gas Furnace as it had been improperly installed and it is presenting hazard to my family and I. Both of the HVAC technicians stated that due to the risk of how the Gas Furnace was installed, they thought it best to call the Inspector out to investigate this matter.

I called the Tennessee Code Inspector out to exam the unit and he red tagged the entire installation and the preparation leading up to it. The inspector saw that a permit was pull but that the company, Greenway Home Service never scheduled an inspection. At the time, I was dealing with the fact that after the installation of the Gas Furnace one of their installers fell through my ceiling and left a big hole. This situation totally distracted my focus on making sure that the the Gas Furnace was inspected, as this matter became secondary to getting my ceiling repaired.

To date, Greenway Home Service, American Home Shield has failed to make this issue go away. They have failed all three inspection done by the Tennessee State Chief of Coding Inspector. I have written dozens of letters and made hundreds of call to American Home Shield. No one has returned my calls and they espect that I will just get in the line with the hundreds of other claimants who have experienced the same type of unprofessional service that I have.

I recently had to file a claim for my Trash Compactor thru American Home Sheild. They promise a responce within 24 hour. In 24 Hour you get a call from a contractor that took 5 days total to get them out to look at the Trash compactor. The servivce man came to the house ( Premier Appliance Services) and told me they needed to order parts and they would report back to American Home Sheild. 2 Hours later Ahs Called and said they are not approving the claim because of abuse to the compactor...This is the worst scam I have ever delt with. Pure Fraud. I will never recomend this company..Do not use Ever

I had a contract with American Home Shield for over three years. Last month I had a problem with my garbage disposal. They gave me the name of the company that was to come out. I googled the company and found dozens of extremely negative commments. I called American Home Shield and told them I wanted a different contractor. There response was "we won't give you a different contractor. Do you want to get out of your contract?" I said yes and that was it. No attempt at trying to please the customer. What a lousy company. Compared to some complaints, mine is pretty minor I guess, but it just made my blood boil.

I have been a satisfied customer for over 5 years, and until recently I had my pool pump break, and heater at the same time. I called to put in a claim. This was a Friday night, and by the time the first tech came on Tuesday, my pool was looking bad, so I shocked it. Well little did I know is that they check the water and if the chemicals are not with in specs they deny. I tried to explain to them that I had just shocked it earlier that day. Additionally the first tech told me that it was an electrical issue on both. The parts in question on the units never touch water. This was confirmed by a second tech they sent out, but the same thing, water was not within spec. He also told me it was an electrical issue, but tested the water also, and that’s what they went with. I also contacted Hayward, the maker if the pump, and heater, and they told me that water has nothing to do with my issues, as they were electrical in nature. I was also told by a close friend and pool tech that this a common practice to deny a claim. This really disturbs me that I have been a loyal customer for over 5 years and they use this flawed process to deny my claim. I’m now on the hook for almost 5K in repairs myself… Why did I even bother to continue my warranty? Very sad in FL Additionally it took 45 min to get a person over the phone, and another 30 to get to the right person, only to find out they are now closed for the day. Not Fun!!!

I have been with AHS for just over a year. In August 2015 I requested service for an electrical problem it took over a month to get a repair person out but becuase AHS finally did what they said I continued with thier program. I have now made a request for service on my oven this was done in Nov. 2015 befor Thanksgiving and I am still waiting to get it fixed. I had a repair person come out and paid the $75.00 fee but the oven is not fixed. I have contacted AHs several times requesting to speak with a supervisor and am tole the request is made by the representitive via e-mail and I will hear from a sup within 24 hours, I have yet to hear from one. I requested cancelation yesterday, 1/5/2016, and was transfered to the retnetion department but was I abel to speak with someone of course not,

I have to e-mail the retnetion dept with my request but guess what, there is not way to contact them directly. In fact, in thier FAQ the answer on how to cancel is to call the same number i called yesterday. This outfit is the biggest fruadulant organization I have ever had th e misfortune to deal with. If you are smart you wills tay the hell away from having anything to do this this bull s**t unless you just want to give away your money. The only thing worse that thier customer service is the having no service as in thier contract. By the way they will refer to what the contract says everytime you have to speak with someone there but of course they will not provied any of the services stated are covered in the contract. How a company doing business so fraudulently can be in business is beyond me.

American Home Shield (AHS) is a deceptive and disorganized company. Recently, I had plumbing leaks and filed a claim to have them repaired. The warranty company dispatched a local plumbing company to my home to assess the issue. It was then that I learned my contract required me to remove "obstructions" from the walls, including cabinets and plumbing, for repairs to be completed. I had to disconnect the plumbing to the only sinks in my home and move sink base cabinets to the middle of the floor.

After doing this, the plumber cut holes into the walls in two different rooms and left, claiming to return with supplies. Instead, I received a call from AHS requesting an additional $300.00 to complete one of the repairs. The warranty company did not have any information on the second repair and alleged that I did not report both issues at the same time. I have e-mail confirmations to prove otherwise.

If I had not employed a contractor and a separate plumbing company, I would have been forced to pay additional fees for one repair and go days or weeks with a disconnected sink from the second leak.

AHS claimed the removal of obstructions and the holes cut into the walls were a part of their diagnostic process. The amount of damage caused from these actions should not be required to determine if coverage is available.

I spoke with several representatives and supervisors but received no resolution. I filed a complaint against AHS with the Attorney General's offices in Alabama and Tennessee, along with the Better Business Bureau (BBB). AHS has nearly 6,000 complaints with the BBB regarding poor customer service, poor quality of work, and deceptive warranty coverage. The BBB has closed my complaint, noting that I was not satisfied with AHS' response. One attorney directed me to the Attorney General in my state, but his office forwarded my complaint to the Alabama Department of Insurance, which offered no solution.

In my correspondence with AHS, they continued to repeat Section E-1 and Section H-8 of their contract. Section E-1 mentions the removal of obstructions, listing "built-in appliances, systems, cabinets, and floor coverings" as obstructions. Section H-8 states that "AHS is not responsible or liable for the cost of construction, carpentry, or other modifications made necessary by the existing equipment or installing different equipment." The latter section can be used to deny any and all claims filed with AHS. A warranty is pointless if it does not cover construction, carpentry, and modifications.

Consumers should be made aware of the legalese in their contracts, so they can make an informed decision about whether or not they want to continue paying for coverage they may not have. Many are blindsided when they are in dire situations, which explains the high volume of complaints.

Had the absolute worst experience with American Home Shield, the repair service company, even worst than last time. I called them December 8 to replace my garbage disposal. Their promise is to have someone check broken items within 24-48 hours. They told me that they could not keep their word and that they would get back to me. Well guess what? They just got back to me today, December 14, 6 days later. I had a company come out the day I called, December 9 and replace the disposal. I had to do this because the unit is a rental which I explained to AHS. 'It's not our policy' was the answer. The repair cost $500. They choose the low end of the food chain for repairs and don't pay them enough to make the work a priority.

Just received a "Welcome Packet" from American Home Shield for a home warranty that I never requested. The letter is signed by a "T. Seymour", Vice President of Renewals.

I've no idea how this company would be under the impression that I made any sort of arrangement with them. The "Account Summary" is complete with an "Agreement Number" as well as an "Agreement Term".

I percieve this to be some type of phishing scam and would be most interested to hear if anyone else has experienced this with this company.

I called american home shield on 9/27/15 for repair on services. the techinican stated that it has to be approve by this company to order parts. The parts takes up to 7 days toarrive plus what available times the techinician has time to schedule an appoitnment. I been 20 days without a refrigerator. customer services sucks.

I would definitely recommend not using American home shield.

Had a service ticket opened, since 09Aug, to fix exhaust fan. After the electrical contractor, Budget electric, scheduled a service apt, they did not show up. After I again called the contracting company, they scheduled for another day. The contractor showed up, took the $75 service fee, and said the unit needed to be replaced. He said they would schedule another apt., after they have the parts. Waited for over a month, but did not get a call back. So I again called up the contractor. The contractor showed up without any parts. He dismantled the unit, and left it in a disassembled state, and said would give a call back once he know when he can get the parts. Did not hear back, so called up the contractor again, and receptionist said she would contact the technician that visited our home, and call back. Did not hear back, so called AHS, called them daily for almost a week, and each time was told that they are trying to get in touch with the contractor. Have still not received an ETA on when the repair will be made. And today, I noticed that, without my authorization, they renewed my contract, and charged my credit card. I had only authorized charging my credit card on a monthly basis for my existing contract, not to renew future contracts.

I have filed a complaint with the BBB.

I have been with AHS for over 15 years and at one time before this lapse in customer service had 5 properties with this company!!!! On July 25, 2015 I called to report my washing machine was not working. 2 weeks later SS Appliance came out and ordered a part, a week later they came back to put the ordered parts in only to tell me they don't know what's wrong another company would have to come out. A week later Stephen's Appliance came out and like the other company misdiagnosed the problem and ordered the wrong parts. It has been over 6 weeks and AHS is sending another company out who will take another 2 to 3 weeks to come out diagnosed and order the parts again. I will be 2 months without a washer, Im spending $145 a week at laundry mat, and I pay AHS $73 EVERY MONTH FOR THIS GRAVE INCONVIENCE!!!!!!!!!! What's even more frustrating is the washer isn't 2 years old and was replaced by AHS.. I am beyond frustrated and can't understand why AHS cant be empathic enough to look at how long it has taken and 2 different contractors have been out and 5 different parts have been ordered and I am still without a washer............ And not to mention HOLD TIMES ARE 45 MIN TO AN HOUR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My dryer broke I called American Home Shield to get it repaired I was told that it would be two weeks before a technician could get out to rpair it. A little excessive wait but I went with it. American Home Shield called me back and told me that the technician would be arriving at my house between the hours of 8 and 5 pm. I told the representative that I could not stay in this house for 8 hours waiting for the tech. I don't go to work I don't get paid. So the rep told me that the tech would call me when he was a hour out, I gave the rep my cell number. I left work a hour early when I arrived at my house there was a sears van getting ready to back out of the drive way. When he saw me pull in he got out of his vehicle and told me that he had been trying to call me I asked what number he had he was calling my home number no wonder he could not get in touch with me I was at work not at home. So he comes inside to fix the dryer he does not have the parts to repair it. He calls AMHS and requests to replace the item as it is 12 years old and it will cost 723. dollers to fix it. AMHS says repair it, so he orders the parts. Again this dryer is at least 12 years old. The tech tells me that he won't be out for two more weeks. So it will have been over a month with out a dryer. I call AMHS I am on hold for 45 min or so when I finely get to talk to someone I request that the dryer be replaced. I am then transfered to the home aplience department they take my info and tell they will call me back in two days. Well 4 days go by nothing heard so I call them (AMHS) I ask to talk to the aplience department ( after I was on hold again for 30 min or so ) I am now talking with the aplience department and I am told that I talking with the wrong department. I am transferred back to AMHS and they get my info and tell me they will call me in 3-5 bussiness days. Again nothing heard so I call them back again on hold for at least a hour this time. I finaly get to talk to a rep and ask her if I can talk to a supervisor and she tell sme no. I have to talk to her first. I about lost it I can't belive this service that I am recieving it just blows me away./ The dryer that I bought 12 years ago was around 300 dollers to repair this dryer it will cost almost 800 dollers. With this type of bussniess ethic how do they stay in bussiness or for that mater turn a profit? The custormer service is extremely poor. I would rate them at a -10. Don't waste your money with american home shield. I would not ever reccomend them to anyone. Go else where.

On Tuesday Aug 4th called AHS when air was out. A tech came next day and diagnosed. He stated a blown out circuit board and a temperature switch in the compressor was failing. He mentioned he was torn on what to tell AHS as his claims with them have been high as he fixes the problems and he was afraid my claim would be denied. AHS wanted a second opinion and that other company arrived Friday, Aug 7th. Was told circuit board had to be ordered and it would take 7-10 days for the tech to receive the part and then scheduling for the repair could occur. This tech from Absolute Air Authority stated that he couldn't put in a faulty temperature switch in the compresor although it sounded like it as he needed it operational first to determine that. In addition, we were told that a former tech through AHS seemed to have created the circuit board problem by wiring the unit incorrectly during a "repair". We have had AHS for several years and this unit has had issues almost yearly and sometimes multiple times per year. Some techs have tried to put through for a replacement unit, but AHS keeps putting a band aid on this 15 yr old unit. In June 2015 I had AHS dispatch an AC company as the unit was having periodic issues of blowing warm air and the company told me they saw no issueswhich still persist today and obviously missing the wire issue which caused the circuit board to burn out. Left in a house at 95 degrees we were beside ourselves. We called to speak to customer service and get a Manager. Was told a Manager would call back in 24 business hours. No call was received by Tues Aug 11th so I called back, waiting on hold at least 40 minutes this call as well as ALL calls placed. A manager called me back Tues night and stated the part couldn't be located and a national search was issued and to call back on Wed, Aug 12th for an update as the part should be located by then. The Mgr authorized a $250 expense to be reimbursed for a window unit. This cost covered a 350 sq foot room to be cooled. We have been able to get a portion of a room cooled to 88 degrees in our 3,800 sq foot home. On Wed Aug 12th AHS told me that a part had been located and was being shipped to the tech at Absolute Air and it would take 3-5 days. They told me they don't overnight any parts. On Tues Aug, 18th I received a call from Absolute Air stating they received an email from AHS stating the part had been shipped that day and would take 3-5 days to be received. I called AHS in despair and voiced concerns about being told the part was in the mail on Wed Aug 12th. I asked to have a Manager call me back and the Rep told me they would call me in about 20-30 minutes after she spoke to the parts department to get more information on if the part was sent regular mail or fedex (NOT overnight though). 7 hrs later no call back and no Mgr. We have endured record temps in AZ at 117 degrees through this and all our fish died due to the extreme heat, our cats have been panting and we have to cool them down in our cars and try to contain to a room with the little air we have from the window unit at 88 degrees. I have asthma and it has been worsening. I have had to increase daily meds and regularly use a nebulizer. We can't be expected to live like this for this duration of time. On 8/24, a new circuit board was installed in our 5 ton unit. In addition, the 3 ton unit was not cooling properly and air coming out of the supply vents registers 69 to 70 degrees. Was told by the Absolute air tech that the unit is old and that is all I am going to get out of it. In addition, tech stated factory thermostats were not installed and that is why units won’t cool properly and not covered. Was told by 3 other AC companies, I personally had look at my units, that is a load of BS. A service recall was issued on both units and Absolute Air tech came out. 5 ton unit keeps going out periodically every 3 to 4 days it will stop cooling and just circulate warm air. I had it do this for 3 hours and then finally the cooling kicked in and it worked again. The 3 ton still doesn’t cool properly due to air blowing out at 69 and 70 degrees. In addition, I readdressed a complaint I have had AHS send prior tech’s out throughout the last year of too much humidity coming from my units and filters rusting. Absolute Air tech stated that he can’t do anything more to the 5 ton unit and the periodic cooling outage. He stated it is likely a temperature switch in the condenser but there are no condensers available in the world for our unit. 3 ton, told again, it's old and can’t get cooler. Both units were seen with leaking water from the drain pans into our filters and was told the condensation lines needed to be at a different angle and NOT covered. Tech pulled pvc condensation lines down and screwed a metal tie around them to pull down. Was told the plenum is not level and that is why all the leaking water and NOT covered. Periodic outage happened again and on 9/1, the tech came out again for a second recall. He rewired the unit to try to bypass the low speed as he believed it might get rid of the periodic outage, however, later that day it was realized that the unit was not shutting off even though the thermostat was at a temperature 2 degrees lower than set. The wires he manipulated were causing the unit to bypass the thermostat and never shut off. He came around 9PM at night to put the wires back to normal and the unit shut off. On Sat 9/6, we had an outage for 4 hours of the 5 ton unit again. Finally turned the unit off for 1 hour and back on and cooling began again. I have requested a Supervisor 4 times at AHS and was told they would call within 24 business hours. NO CALL YET. In addition, the Absolute Air tech asks me every time he services the unit how long I will continue to do this and AHS will not replace my failing units and I need to replace them through him. I am sick of being a victim and want my units replaced by AHS by a contractor of my choice.

As a customer with American Home shield, I put request for AC service on 5/31/2015. I received a confirmation email right away giving me information about the contractor who is supposed to take care of the service I requested and that s/he will contact me with a 24 hrs to schedule the inspection visit. Two days passed and no one contacted so I went ahead and called AHS to see what's going on. I was told that the contractor they set my service up with doesn't have an opening before two weeks. I asked if there is a way to find another contractor, she said she'll try. They changed the contractor; however the technician didn’t come until June He works for JJK-HVAC LLC. He diagnosed the problem and told me that he will do his best to fix it. I didn't know by doing his best he meant that he will harass me. He was asking me very personal questions when he was over at my house then he started texting me inappropriate messages (which I have records of) after he left. I felt so uncomfortable as he was bargaining me to get my AC repaired. I reported him to both his employer and AHS. JJK-HVAC LLC Ended up sending the owner of the company to apologize and fix the AC while AHS did nothing.

Now I put another service request with AHS for microwave repair. I requested the service on July 25th 2015. They assigned the job to SILVER STAR APPLIANCES LLC. The technician came over to my house after two days, diagnosed the problem with a broken heater and said he will come back to replace it once he receives the broken piece. He came back 3 weeks later and changed the part, but he ended up breaking the controlling board which was working pretty well before he replaced the broken part. Today is September 3rd and I still haven’t had my microwave fixed. The repair company wants to replace the part the technician broke with a refurbished part which of course I refused giving that the piece wasn’t broken and wasn’t the problem of why my microwave wasn’t heating and now I have to accept replacing it with a refurbished part. I have been calling AHS since July 27th, stay on the line for no less than 15 minutes waiting for a representative to pick up the phone then nothing has happened.

I have had American Home Shield membership for over Four years. I had a leak in my faucet and call AHS to fix the leak. They sent a very rude Plummer (Bear Plumbing & Router Inc.) after 4 days of water leaks to "examine" my leaking faucet but did nothing to stop the leak. I get a call 2 days later from AHS (faucet still leaking) to state that my faucet had preexisting condition and they do not pay for this leaking problem. How does a leak have a preexisting condition when it did not leak before. Leaking happened on the day I call AHS. I am paying well over $500 for this service and they cannot respond to a leaking faucet. Everyone, beware of American Home Shield, do not sign up with them.

AHS treated us horribly. Misrepresented their services and coverage. We decided to cancel our agreement and have been waiting over 2 months for our pro-rated amount to be returned. Terrible business practices.
