African Americans on the Move Book Club Reviews

  • Jul 19, 2018

The African American on the Move Book Club (AAMBC) charged the 15-20 authors a fee of $185.00 per table at their 10th annual book signing event that was held in a restaurant in Atlanta, Georgia on June 8, 2018. They promised the authors a large audience. The front portion of the restuarant was packed with customers. The book signing was held in the back half of the restuarant but was very visble to all of the customers in the front, and, there was signage.

An hour and a half into the scheduled two and one half hour book signing, most of the authors had not sold a single book because there were no customers. It was at this time that a relative of mine and her daughter came to my table to buy a copy of my book. They were quickly approached by AAMBC staff members and told that they did not pay their fee and were asked to go back to the entrance and pay. The fee was $25.00 per person.

They were asked to pay a total of $50 to buy a $13.00 book. They refused. Relatives of other authors did pay.

When I reminded the staff member that the authors were not made aware of this charge before signing up, she said "I apologize for that." I had come from Florida, others had come from Mississippi, Louisiana, Pennsylvania and other states. When all was said and done, only a handful of books were sold and most of those were to other authors. Several authors did not sell a single book.

I called the creator of AAMBC, Tamika Newhouse, multiple times on the two numbers provided to me. My calls were not returned. I went on Ms. Newhouse's webpage and left an e-mail. She did not respond. Finally, I sent her a Certified Letter advising her of my complaint. Two notices of the letter were delievered to her post office box on June 16, 2018 and June 25, 2018, but to this date the letter has not been picked up. I guess Ms. Newhouse does not feel my complaint is worthy of a response.

Not telling the authors that the customers had to pay, in addition to their table fee, was deliberate and fraudulant. Ms. Newhouse was trying to make money at both ends. The trip cost me over $650.00 total with the table fee, hotel, gas, and food. I am certain that the other out of state authors had similar expenses. Maybe you can reach her.
