ACCESS Specialty Animal Hospital Reviews

  • May 16, 2018

I took my dog there on 5/15 because he had a fever and was trembling as if he had pain. I drove farther out to see them after midnight because I have had a bad experience with another facility closer to my home so I didn't mind driving out a little farther and paying more for my baby for better care. He already had a history of having seizures but this seamed more like a stomach issue.

When I took him in he had already had his phenobarbital medication for the evening (of which I did inform the doctor). After I agreed to have blood work done they told me that it looked like it was pancreatitis and asked if I wanted to do an ultrasound and give him medication (Injection) for pain. I decided to go ahead and have them administer the pain medication (buprenorphine). I was then to follow up with his own Vet.

Well... they did tell me he was going to be very sedated (which he was). I put him to bed when I got home around 4am and a few hrs later he was still sleeping... I called ACCESS to ask them if I should still administer the Phenobarbital at noon (which was his dosage time) and they said yes. So I did.. I also gave him his Potassium Bromide (Which is given once a day).

A few hrs later he was still drowsy and just sleeping... I began trying to wake him up and stood him up and he would just collapse... like a rag doll. I tried to give him water.. which he drank a lot off. I left him sleeping again.., then I began to hear him yelp in high pitches.. he want to get up and urinate... but its seemed like he was so sedated he couldn't get himself to get up. He ended up urinating on himself.

A few hrs later tried to give him some chicken.. he didn't want to eat. (MIND YOU HE ALWAYS EATS). He was just sleeping. I tried to get him up again and he couldn't stand at all.... just drooped and collapsed. I called ACCESS to ask how long it took for sedation to subside.., they said no more than 6 hrs. I was far beyond 6 hrs now... and no eating. I kept giving water which he did drink. I was now getting very concerned because he had not eaten now in 48 hrs and was still passed out. I decided to take him to Chatoak pet Hospital before I was about to hit midnight again (Chatoak closes at Midnight and would have to go to another 24 hr emergency location.

After speaking to the doctor at Chatoak they had me leave him there overnight maybe even longer to get him stable. They put him on fluids and then also administered his phenobarbital through injection. 2 hrs later from dropping him off I got a call he had passed. The Doctor said she did not know why because his heart seemed okay .. but was beating very fast when I dropped him off.

They said he may have gotten a reaction to the buprenorphine shot given at ACCESS. Well Now my dog is gone but I want to tell everyone to always ask and look up what they ae giving your pet.. I TOLD THE DOCTOR AT ACCESS THAT MY DOG WAS ALLERGIC TO SHOTS.... NOW I THOUGHT BUPRENORPHINE WAS JUST A PAIN MEDICATION LIKE SHE STATED... I BECAME SO ANGRY TODAY TO FIND OUT THAT BUPRENORPHINE IS MORPHINE... AND THEY ADMINSTERED IT AFTER I TOLD THEM HE HAS HAD ALLERGIC REACTIONS TO SHOTS IN THE PAST WHY????

WHY DID SHE EXPLAIN TO ME WHAT THE SHOT WAS??? TO BE HONEST I AN MORE UPSET AT MYSELF FOR NOT LOOKING IT UP.. I KNOW BETTER.. I ALWAYS LOOK THINGS UP FIRST ..BEFORE MAKING A DECISION AND IF I KNEW THIS WAS MORPHINE.... I WOULD HAVE SAID HELL NO..ESPECIALLY KNOWING THAT MY DOG IS ON SEIZURE MEDICATION. I ASK YOU ALL TO PAY ATTENTION...DO YOUR REASEARCH AND ASK QUESTIONS BEFORE MAKING A DECISION THAT CAN CAUSE A LOSS OF LOVED PET!!!

I don't want to blame anyone here.... but as professionals it is their duty to explain what is being given exactly to the patient. We are not doctors and in time of stress dealing with our ill pets we want the best for them and we take them to these facilities because we trust that them as educated professionals in their field know more than we do. I just wanted to put this out there and possibly avoid this from happening again with another pet.

I also want to state that maybe BUPRENORPHINE is used in various pets with no adverse reactions but all pets are not built the same and I just want to encourage all pet owners to be aware of what our pets are allergic too and are not and to make sure you know what exactly they are giving your pet. Information is crucial... inform yourself. I unfortunately can not take it back but if I can save a pet out there it would definitely help me feel a lot better.

I also just read this on line---
